Lanarkshire News - Thirsk race "King Louis strikes again"
We have arrived for last race of the Lanarkshire 2024 season f.
Thirsk in North Yorkshire hasn't been a happy hunting ground for members in the past and again would be probable go down as one of the worst races since Wetherby 2021.
The winning pigeon took 4hrs 19 minutes for the 154 miles for a velocity of 1047.
Only nine pigeons recorded 1000ypm with others struggling to get into the 900ypm.
The weather appeared to close in on the 1,400 pigeons that had been liberated at 0700am in a light south west wind.
The weather at the home end was a fresh west wind with heavy showers.
Returns were a mixed bag but unfortunately some like myself had heavy losses.
Something we could have done without after the horrendous old bird season.
Every race has a winner and for the third time from four races competed in the YB programme the brilliant Lewis McCalley of Clarkston club recorded 1st North sect ,1st Open federation with a B/C sitting four day eggs.
The pigeon was prepared on the darkness system and was obviously motivated sitting its first time on eggs.
Lewis provided me with the breeding ,Sire was purchased from the Champion fancier Geoff Kirkland. The father of it was a good racer for Geoff being a grandson of his famous "Snake”. The Mother was a daughter of" Snake"
The Dam of this week’s winner is 552 ,one off the Super Mio's Bred by Mio Krivokapic ,she topped the federation from the Wetherby YB smash in 2021 and has been one of the most consistent birds in the last three years.
Lewis has recorded 4 x 1st Open federations in 2024 ,a truly brilliant achievement with a small team of pigeons.
He entered four YB races winning 3 x 1st Open federation and 3rd Open federation in the other.
Lewis is not one for chasing averages and very seldomly starts a programme only entering his birds when he feels they are right to win the federation.
This would put him in my opinion as a truly remarkable pigeon fancier.
They call him "King Louis " and Scotland's number 1 .
On these results who would argue!
Lewis stated "Not really the race most of us would've liked and hopefully more birds work in the next day or two".
Well done Lewis on another remarkable result on a very tough race.
Just to note the 2021 disaster from Wetherby was also won by Lewis!
Hopefully get a loft report from Lewis.

Well done to all who managed to finish a very, very difficult racing programme.
350 members started and only 13 lofts finished.
After a Tsunami of a season some will leave the sport ,for others they will buckle down and weather the storm that's
pigeon racing.
Thanks to everyone who sent information to make up the Lanarkshire news throughout season.
Thanks to the committee and Federation Secretary Jim Cameron for their fantastic work for the members.
