Performance Pigeons UK - A Centre of Excellence.
I took the "Short" trip along to Performance Pigeons UK breeding stud to meet up with John Short, the breeding centres owner.
John and his pigeon manager Vanessa, gave me a warm welcome into their pigeon breeding centre and we got down to talk over how he was progressing in this. John has some fantastic Sprint/Middle distance lines! The principle stock available are; Frans & Gert Rondags , Dirk Van Den Bulk & John’s own Performance Lines
Based on our own experience, racing a small kit of birds in 2024. "We weren't disappointed with the results".
We raced 10 Performance Pigeons UK from an overall team of 30 YBs.
The Performance UK birds were first to our loft from four of the five races they competed.
The results in the Lanarkshire federation I feel were impressive.
9th Open 3,311birds,
9th Open 2,632 birds,
10th Open 2,248 birds,
13th Open 1981 birds,
15th Open 1,981 birds,
23rd Open ,3,311,
25th Open 1981 birds,
47th Open 2,248 birds,
52nd & 52rd Open 3,311 birds,
61st Open 2,248 birds.
I think this is excellent returns from a team of 10 pigeons!
It’s been nearly five years since my last visit so what has changed?
With this in mind I got down to talk to John about his last five years since my last visit.
Learning from what breeding lines are producing winners and marketing his birds in the right way has helped them build a strong customer base who return because of their continued success with Performance Pigeons UK stock
John Short was an excellent pigeon fancier when he competed at club and National level, winning at the very top level within the Lanarkshire federation with a number of 1st Open federation.
The knowledge and experience of working in his well-established small mammal business before establishing Performance Pigeons UK breeding centre has been a great help in relation to business management.
The pigeon breeding is more of a love for the sport and a way of John being connected to the sport, the sport being a big part of his adult life.
John has a wealth of knowledge of the best performance pigeons by undertaking extensive research.
Only then reinvesting in new stock will be undertaken to maintain and improve his highly successful stock.
His stock are based on birds that have are "high percentage prize winners at KBDB level", he feels this a truer reflection on performance pigeons winning regularly in Europe's biggest birdage events.
Performances
These birds are winning throughout the UK with many having top results in Federation, National and One Loft Racing!
John receives regular endorsements about his stock with one example of a fancier winning 54 section prizes in the top 15 of their section, including 6 x 1st section & 2 x 1st Open Lanarkshire federation in birdage up to 4,000 birds in season 2024.
The winning returns throughout the length and breadth of the British Isles is growing year on year.
New stock for future breeding has been obtained with the introduction of seven pairs of the finest most sot after lines from A&B Leideman pigeons.
These should arrive shortly after their DNA paperwork has been approved.
So what is Johns breeding management system that produces healthy robust youngsters.
No antibiotic therapy is undertaken.
The birds only receive treatment for canker twice per year and a spray for external mites.
They receive a moulting mixture throughout the non-breeding period.
When rearing a Breed & Wean is available with the inclusion of egg food and Hormoform.
Natural additive Comed Winmix is used on the corn with a number of oils on the corn to promote health and wellbeing to the breeders.
Calcium additives with Vit D3 is a very beneficial product to maintain the health of breeding pigeons.
Birds receive weekly bath which include bath salts.
Annual vaccination for PMVA
On assessment of the youngsters received were very well bred, strong in structure and vitality with perfect feathering.
The youngsters are monitored for 5-7 days in weaning baskets and receive a 4 in 1 Harkers tablet before entering these baskets. They are handled twice per day to make sure they are drinking.
John makes final assessment before any youngsters are ready before despatch.
Johns stock is based on the best Sprint/Middle distance bloodlines as John feels the biggest percentage of racing is evolving into these races.
He feels the best performances from his stock are achieved from 50-300miles,but results from longer events can be achieved in favourable conditions.
The pigeon environment is an ongoing cycle of hard work with routine which is required to maintain a healthy stock.
