LANARKSHIRE FEDERATION
Tom Corrie jnr
Lanarkshire Federation - Kelso 2 on 30/7/16
Back to Kelso in the Scottish borders for the second week of the young bird programme. With a convoy of 5, 500, which was much healthier numbers than last week?s convoy.
The birds were away at 08 30 am in a light south west wind which felt more west north west at the home end with some heavy showers about, with some pigeons returning with pink wattles..
The winners recorded a velocity of 1189, and 1 hr 35 minutes for the sixty odd miles to the loft of Jim Forsyth of Coatbridge Social Circle Club.
Jim had a fantastic race also taking 2nd Open. I took the time to call on Jim and get some information on his win.
On arrival I negotiated the family dog at the gate Jim (Nip) showed me his young bird loft set up and his darkness team of youngsters.
The traditional system of darkness other than when taken off 1st June he slowly increases day hours by an hour each day.
The youngsters are in fine fettle buzzing around like yearlings in the loft, giving the feel of a loft in top form.
Jim Forsyth with his Open winner
Jim told me that his 1st & 2nd Open winners against 5,500 birds came together on Saturday, with time wasted between both entering for Jim to clock manually.
Although the winner was that far ahead, he could have managed possible another minute before surrendering his 1st Open.
The breeding of the winner was Sire out of GWP Macaloney Van Dyke lines and Dam from Paul Ferre(Previous club mate) Lambrecht stock.
2nd Open is a GWP Macaloney Draper lines crossed with the Vandenabeele lines.
Jim?s birds are all blues and chequers from the base of GWP Macaloney lines and looked a picture.
Winning loft of Jim Forsyth - Inside the winning loft of Jim Forsyth
I asked Jim about the preparation for the youngsters before racing. This is his system, they were trained on three occasions privately from the Lanark area and then two tosses with the Lanarkshire transporter on two occasions before the first race. Jim felt this benefited the youngsters, especially getting used to the federation crates Lanarkshire transporter
on two occasions before the first race. He has presently flying around 30 youngsters to the first two races leaving around twenty in the loft each week. He said he likes to send back the first ones to the loft and the remaining pigeons that weren?t entered. The birds are only loft exercised once per day after first race. The birds fly freely and are not forced to fly. The products he uses weekly are cider vinegar (in water), Garlic oil and multi vitamins (in water). He stated he is not a slave to having to treat for this and that every other week.
Jim enjoys the competition of the club and Lanarkshire federation and the team will attempt compete throughout programme.
I wished Jim continued success for the remaining season.
.
The general reports were that most had good returns throughout the federation. Long make it continue.
