Kirkfieldbank Homing & Sporting Club 2014 Presentation

On Friday 14th November in the company of Danny Mitchell and Tom snr we attended Kirkfieldbank Homing & Sporting Club Presentation in the Crown Bar, Hope St, Lanark. With a very important International football match on the same night I thought the turnout may have taken a knock, but not so, a great night was had by all who attended, with one of the best meals you are every likely to have. Everyone settled down to congratulate this year’s prize winners. Top table guests were Jim Hannah, West section all time great and this year’s SNFC Gold Cup West section winner, and for good measure he was also second. He was accompanied by Billy Alison, previous Lanarkshire Social Circle Gold Cup winner, probably the hardest cup to win in the West section.

Special mention to this year’s principal prize winner, the forever young John Stokes (82yrs) who had a cracking season from the distance at Club, Federation and National level. John resides in the village of Carstairs near Lanark, a quiet refined man who has always performed at the distance. Well done John, like a fine wine you just get better with age.

Also Wullie Johnstone had a cracking season at the Nationals, all keeping the great name of Kirkfieldbank club to the fore. Herkes and Telfer won the section within the SNRPC, cracking result lads.

The night flowed well with club secretary John Frood asking the guests how they started in the sport, past strains kept and thereafter generally how they condition their pigeons for the distance. Thereafter the panel was open to the hall for questions.

I enjoyed being in the company of the Coalburn/Lesmahagow lads who had attended, John Callan, Andrew Suckle and David Davidson. The banter flowed all night. Great raffle - I won three prizes.

Top tips from the panel

Keep them fresh for the Nationals, around three races up to 250 miles.

Increase the fats and maize the days before basketing.

You have to work at them in the build up to the chosen race.

Last toss Saturday before basketing on the Tuesday or flag twice daily.

Cider vinegar, excellent product for keeping the birds right.

BA gives the birds Milton sterilizer once per week.

JH uses Virkon S.,

JH says don’t overfeed youngsters, better small amounts more often.

Always try new stock against your own stock.

Thanks to all who attended to support this great club. All the best to all members for 2015.
