Glenmavis FC 2014 Presentation

Glenmavis FC 2014 Presentation

On Friday 7th November myself and my wife were invited to attend Glenmavis FC Presentation Night in the village’s social club to present their trophy winners. Glenmavis is a village in North Lanarkshire area of Scotland. It is situated about 2 miles north-west of Airdrie. Like my own club this club has around ten lofts competing for top honors and the silver wear.

The night was an excellent affair co-ordinated by club secretary/compere John Barlow and President Cammy Stewart. All members, family and friends sat down to a lovely home made three course meal that really hit the mark, setting us all up for the rest of the evening, which included the presentation and karaoke entertainment in the small lounge.

Glenmavis is a small club within the federation but has quality fanciers within its ranks with notable Federation, Open and Federation Average winners within the last two seasons. With notable top fanciers in their ranks and other top fanciers who fly in the local Airdrie club flying from Glenmavis village, the sky around Glenmavis will have plenty of top honours awaiting next year.

John Barlow, or is it Gary, got the karaoke night going, giving his best efforts but sorry John, you were pipped at the post by the Watson sisters and the hilarious edition if Bohemian Rhapsody by Harky from the neighbouring Motherwell club.

It was good to talk with all club members present about the previous season and their plans for the future. Sammy Nelson spent time explaining the history of the village, in which he has lived for 78yrs. Sammy is a real character who has always flown with distinction including a recent Open win in 2013, winning the longest inland race in the federation and this year’s club old bird average winner. In was nice to put a face to Cammy Stewart of Stewart & Rodger, a name I had seen regularly over the seasons but without actually meeting them. Cammy was this year’s Combine and Young Bird average winner at club level. He was telling me he will be flying no old birds next season as his present partnership has folded. I also spent time speaking Jim and Bobby Hughes who had a very steady old bird season with 2 x 1st and 4 x 2nd prizes at club level with his new team of Hartog pigeons from Superdoo, fellow scribe from the Ayrshire North Road Federation. Jim in the past has been very successful at showing pigeons and has recently combined this with racing to the same loft with his Dad. They will be flying against each other next season to the one loft. That must be interesting on race day.

We were made very welcome and quickly settled into the evening with a very nice atmosphere. I would like to thank everyone for taking the time to make us feel welcome, for the lovely gifts and for making it a very enjoyable night. We wish them all the best for the coming season
