Charnock Richard - August 2014
The birds this week moved onto Charnock Richard, a small village and civil parish in the borough of Chorley, Lancashire, around the 160 mile mark back into Central Scotland. The birds were held till 10 am due to rain at the race point then liberated in a fresh west wind that was fresh north-west en route.
With the winning velocity down at 1047 this was a real tester for the youngsters. Like most federations racing into the west we took a hammering with returns. This year the wind has been extremely strong from the west which has made it a tester for the youngsters all season. Throw in the raptor problem and poor racing is the outcome. Many lofts struggled to get up to 40-50% returns on the day with very little homing the following day.
We will probably get an all time low entry for the YB Open race from Uttoxeter next week. Good luck to all who have toughed it out throughout the young bird season. If you have competed in all races with your team you will not be left with many. It’s a long winter once the season is over.
Well done to Wullie Smart of Newmains club on topping the federation with a gutsy pigeon with a story to be told. 4th Sect 9th Open last week and the story behind what happened this week is hard to believe. After last week’s win, she gets out on the Sunday only to be scattered with her loft mate and returns 9hrs later totally flown out. Tossed Tuesday then banged again, 8 hrs on the wing. Wednesday out in the bath then scattered again and returns after 8 hrs. Left to its own devices for the rest of the week and comes out and tops the Fed. This wee doo knows how to out run the BOP and is now named Smarties Rocket. This blue hen could be up for a bird of the year award. Sorry Wullie, no photo.
