Ingleton 2 - August 2014
We return to Ingleton for the second week. The weather looked good and with a north-west wind predicted it was always going to be a steady race with the birds away at 9am. The winners took just over 3 hrs for the 130 miles into Central Scotland. A small amount made it in good time but again the rest appear to have struggled back to their lofts. The birds that didn't make it in the first hour were mostly missing by nightfall. Is there such a thing as a good racing day? On a day that was bright and sunny the birds didn't home with consistency. The convoyer reported a falcon attack at the liberation and it looks as if this scattered the birds to the four winds, so don't blame your management when the birds are funnelled into the valleys never to be seen again. These birds appear to be attacked every mile of the journey and appear spooked on their return. They know what is out there and are terrified. Our feathered friends suffer mentally. Just watch your birds when your routine for basketing comes around - they hide away. Many fanciers reported birds homing injured. We will struggle to get 1,000 for next week - the biggest fed in the country has taken some hammering this year. If we don't change the formula this game is finished in under 5 years. Some serious thinking is needed in the close season. Fanciers are sick to the teeth, spending time and money and stressing over the present formula for racing pigeons. It has to change. It must change. Even training birds at this time of the year is very risky with constant reports of attacks and big losses.
We will move onto this week’s winner. Well done to George Geddes, a member of my own club Clarkston & Dist on topping the Federation. George’s winner is from a Busschaert cock and hen from Tommy McLaughlin of Coatbridge off his John Halstead stock.
