Stainmore - August 2014

We move to a new liberation point this week. With the weather forecast horrendous over the weekend, we race-marked on Sunday evening for a Monday race from Stainmore Brough, sometimes known as Brough under Stainmore, a village and civil parish in the Eden district of Cumbria, England, on the western fringe of the Pennines near Stainmore. The village is on the A66 trans-Pennine road, and the Swindale Beck, and is about 8 miles (13 km) south east of Appleby-in-Westmorland. Brough is situated 5 miles (8.0 km) north east of Kirkby Stephen and 28 miles (45 km) north east of Kendal on the A685. The 5,500 birds were liberated on Monday 4th August at 12.30pm in a WSW wind which appeared to turn more WNW making it a more testing day for our youngsters racing back into Central Scotland. Like most weeks the winners made good time into most clubs but again a lot struggled home with returns patchy throughout the federation.Looking at the weather it was superb for the pigeons, bright sunshine well into the night with excellent weather the next morning which should have allowed their return but again many never made their journey.This week’s federation winner was from the East section to the partnership of Eadie & Kelly of Newmains club. Andy Eadie is one of the most consistent lofts of the federation with multiple trophies won over the last decade. Well done Andy, just pipping your big pal Tam Richardson in a blanket finish. Tam you will have to get a couple of trappers to beat him.
