Ypres Open race - July 2014
When the First World War was declared in August 1914 the town was known by its French name of Ypres. Now the town is formally known by the Flemish name of Ieper and Flemish is the local spoken language. Being closeto the French border, nevertheless, like many places in this locality the town is known by both names and visitors will find it signposted in both Flemish and French. Ieper (Ypres) is an ancient city located in the Flemish province of West Flanders (West-Vlaanderen) in the Westhoek region of Belgium. The municipality of Ieper includes the city itself and a number of villages, namely Boezinge, Brielen, Dikkebus, Elverdinge, Hollebeke, Sint-Jan, Vlamertinge, Voormezele, Zillebeke and Zuidschote. Ieper and these villages count a population of around 35,000 inhabitants.
This race point has been a terrific liberation site for the Lanarkshire over the past few years with many sending their yearlings with confidence. This is the race everyone in the Lanarkshire Federation wishes to win and,the anticipation was felt for this year's race.
In conjunction with SNFC the birds were liberated at 06.15 into a west/south west wind on 7th July. The average distance 450 miles. The liberation went well and the 600 plus Lanarkshire pigeons headed for home into Central Scotland, making their way down through France, over the English Channel and up the east cost of England, hitting their destination around the 1700hrs mark for the winners. The race was the best of the season with decimal points separating the winners.
What about the winner, Billy Gordon, who flies in the Cambuslang club? Billy has flown a good pigeon for many a year achieving last year's west section old bird average. All members are very pleased for Billy as he is a true professional (many a year ago being a professional footballer). The story was that Billy was on holiday when the birds were homing and Frank Welsh timed the birds. Is this the secret Billy? Frank won the section from this race a couple of seasons ago. Billy you deserve your success.
Beaten by a decimal for 2nd Open is Gordon Orr of Eaglesham away down in the west corner of the Lanarkshire Federation. Gordon has had a topping season this year winning his club East Kilbide most weeks. Unlucky Gordon. We don't think at this distance you can get beat by the blink of an eye!
