Arkhall South RPC, South Lanarkshire Federation 2013

LANARKSHIRE FEDERATION

Tom Corrie

Larkhall South RPC, South Lanarkshire Federation

Larkhall South members and friends got together for a cracking wee night in the local Raploch Bowling Club. The night was very well organised by John McFall and members and with Margaret and Mary Thompson looking after the catering, everyone settled down for a great night. The club races in the South Lanarkshire Federation and has a long history with great distance flying into the west section of Scotland.

After John Leggate and Tom Corrie Snr presented the trophies a lovely free buffet including home baking from Margaret was available for everyone to enjoy. Thereafter an open discussion followed - predominantly about distance racing! With names such as Davie Donaldson, Norman Orr, Jimmy Hamilton, Wullie Johnstone, Davie Jack, Wullie Watson, Billy Graham, John Leggate, Danny Mitchell and Andrew & Robert Lockhart in the company, everyone else was all ears when these guys spoke. What a line up of names! John McFall kept the questions flowing and with good healthy debate, the hours passed quickly. I always think during these smaller nights you really do get to know the fanciers, getting the chance to approach them, introduce yourself and get some valuable information. Subjects like pairing, breeding, preparation for the distance race programmes were all covered, with John giving everyone the chance to have their say. One of the main themes was the preparation of birds for the distance. There are many roads to Rome but the main feeling was that the candidates for the 550-600 mile events should be lightly raced and fresh for the event.

The atmosphere was excellent with plenty of banter among these fanciers. They all know each other well and are very much aware of each one’s ability. This doesn't stop them having a light hearted pop at each other in the best sense of the meaning.

The main prize winner this year was John McFall who I personally think should be applauded for his overall good values at promoting the sport of racing pigeons in Scotland. John is a top fancier and has multiple federation prize winners most weeks in the fed. Well done John, you deserve it. A real gentleman.
