Lanarkshire Ypres Race 8th July 2017
Ypres (leper), is a town in the Belgian province of West Flanders. It's surrounded by the Ypres Salient battlefields, where many cemeteries, memorials and war museums honour the battles that unfolded in this area during World War I. After being destroyed in the war, many important buildings were carefully reconstructed.
This week we have come to the longest race of the programme, around the 450 miles back into the central belt of Scotland.
Again we were convoyed by the SNFC with 730 Lanarkshire birds in a convoy of 2300.
.
Liberated at 6 40 am in a light west south west wind and with lovely bright clear weather forecast up and down the country for the flight path home expectations were high.
But when 5pm came and went and not a bird recorded back into Scotland, alarm bells started ringing.
Like all races across the channel this season, its turned out a tough affair with the majority of the birds missing.
Was it the birds that didn't cross the channel at the shortest point and possible headed up into Holland. We will never know, why haven't we got the technology which is available to others to track the navigation of birds?
Blue Caviar raced by GWP Macaloney
The race was won by the brilliant partnership of GWP Macaloney of Airdrie with a super hen SU 15 L 15771 called Blue Caviar.

Blue Caviar must be one of the top performance hens in Europe 2017! And is now retired to stock.
