Lanarkshire Federation -Bedhampton Open

 

 

Bedhampton is a former village, and now suburb, located in the Borough of Havant, Hampshire, England. It is located at the northern end of Langstone Harbour and at the foot of the eastern end of Portsdown Hill

Early mentions of Bedhampton are recorded in the ninth century, and the village was mentioned in the Doomsday Book.

 

Last weeks programmed race from Charnock Richard was cancelled due to poor weather forecast, so a week off for the birds before the longest inland race of the season.

 

This week was the second race we were convoyed by the SNFC and we reach the longest inland race of the programme around the 360 miles mark, back into central Scotland.

1,0000 federation birds within the 6,000 plus birdage, liberated at 6am in a light North west wind, turning south west on route.

The race was a real tough affair, with many experiencing heavy losses, with only a fraction of the 6,000 birds returning.

 

Over the years you would think we would learn as pigeon fanciers, that scotching heat and cloudless skies spells disaster.

 

These were physically tuned pigeons that had probable been at the first National, so fitness wasn't the problem .Dehydration is the biggest killer for pigeons, they cannot orientate and will go down.

We need to take responsibility should, racing  be cancelled in such weather conditions?

 

Congratulations to all those who got a good yin.

  

The winner was recorded at 14 17 hrs into the small village of Glenmavis, which sits north of Airdrie.

This weeks winner is Chalmers Baird of the Airdrie District club, which is one of the most competitive clubs in the land. The last National winner also coming from this club.

There is something magnetic about this village as the number of fed toppers and open winners.

 

I took the time to travel over to see the big man and have a chat about his brilliant open winner.

Chalmers initially took time to show me his lovely team of youngsters in a loft built by Chalmers himself, who is a joiner to trade.  There birds and are in fine fettle.

 

We spoke about pigeon racing in general and this years racing.

On to his winner - It is a small to medium sized hen, strong pectoral muscles and silky feathers.  She was purchased as a youngster from Adrian Hicks of Lyndhurst lofts, Cornwall.  She scored as a youngster from Sedgewick and then took 5th Section.  This year she was initially raced natural and then celibate, being his timer at Buckingham National and also first to loft Longtown earlier in the season.  She was shown to her cock for a number of hours before basketing and the rest is history.

 

Chalmers said he had been speaking to fellow fancier Sam Shanks who had informed him of the early times posted on the web site; Chalmers had to go and re check his clock, as he thought he must have got his time wrong.  Anyway it was after two and he was over the moon with his performance his winner is stopped for the remainder of the season.

 

Chalmers is no stranger to the top of the federation results being the federation champion young bird fancier recently and winning the Open that year for good measure. Chalmers previous article can still be found on the Elimar website archives.

 

Well done big man, a great boost for the rest of the season.
