Yearling Derby From Warwick - 1st Open Gareth Rankin

Yearling Derby from Warwick - 1st Open Gareth Rankin

This week’s race was from Warwick, the county town of Warwickshire, England. The town lies upon the River Avon, 11 miles (18 km) south of Coventry and just west of Leamington Spa and Whitnash. The distance is over 260 miles back into Lanarkshire.

The big man from Larkhall club, Gareth Rankin took the main prize 1st Open Yearling Derby with his check pied hen. Brilliant big man and it couldn't go to a more harder worker for the Lanarkshire federation. Gareth is a household name in Scotland for his exceptional consistency at the distance races. It is of no surprise that he has won this race as he has been very consistent all season. Well done Gareth.

The birds were held till 0845 due to cloud cover, then were up in a light and variable wind which proved to be a very difficult race, well you could say a "real stinker". Nobody to blame, just the way racing is nowadays. All season the racing has been erratic and unpredictable, well possibly predictable in its unpredictability!

At clocking some hadn't timed. Most had only a fraction of their birds and the fear factor had laid its ugly head. These birds have been turned and are not homing in any consistency. The weather was brilliant at the home end and everything looked good for a great racing day. Federations flying the other side of the hills had a good working race, with good returns so what happened to the Lanarkshire?

The reports around the federation are mixed with some having reasonable returns over the two days, others not so good with healthy, fit pigeons not homing. The birdage will not lie - this week we will struggle for birds. Pigeon fanciers take these losses very hard. It is gut wrenching. The fact that birdage has drastically reduced every week is a true sign that things aren't right. Being the press officer I have to report on the race and that's the facts. I think it’s time for a rethink about how we race pigeons. Some say go back down the east, some are talking about racing from a set distance, this is racing the same distance each week. The truth is we are being ripped apart. The battle is very much lost. We can’t continue to take these losses, it’s sole destroying. The great sport of pigeon racing is supposed to be enjoyable with racing that everyone can compete in, but you can’t compete if you don't have the pigeons to send. We are programmed for a race around the 300 mile mark this week but the biggest fed in the land will be lucky to have around a thousand pigeons attending. Four weeks ago we were sending over seven times that number. I’m open to comments.

Wilson & Cairns top the federation this week. The two Rabs have had some season being at the top of the results most weeks. Well done lads. (Sorry no photos. I’ll possibly get some soon).

Strange race with the
winners taking a little longer than it was anticipated. Returns on the whole are reasonable for a race at 260 miles, with perhaps my own being one of the worst with 17/23, others 24/27, 9/9, 19/22, 13/16, 18/20 also 1/5.
