Burton & South Derbyshire Federation - 09-06-22

Burton & South Derbyshire Federation.

Terrific performance by Anthony Probert out of Salisbury (2).

Saturday June 4th saw 66 members from 8 clubs send 1092 birds to Salisbury (2). The forecast wasn’t great for the morning and most of us were expecting an afternoon liberation with a fresh east wind to boot.

Saturday morning panned out better than we thought, and Alys cut the strings at 10-15 in a strong E.N.E. wind. It proved a stiff fly, returns were good, but still plenty returning home with signs of peregrine attack!! We all expected the Hill Ridware lofts to fill the fed sheet with the strong easterly wind, and they didn’t disappoint, the first seven in the result all arrived together, with four peeling out to the loft of Anthony Probert and the other three carrying on to the loft of Mark Nesbitt.

Congratulations to Anthony Probert on an absolute terrific performance, he took  1st; 2nd; 3rd; 4th; 8th; 9th; and10th fed on 1354.4; 1354.2; 1354.0; 1354.0; 1350; 1349.8; 1349.5; timing these seven in a 33 second burst, all yearlings.

ANTHONY PROBERT 1-2-3-4 FED SALISBURY

Anthony’s Leo Heremans are mostly off the Premier Stud direct or from Shane Reading of Hull, Shane was a stock manager at Premier Stud, added to these are more top stock from Mick Bradley of Cumbria and Mark Nesbitt.

The fed winner was a blue cock out of a son of “Houdini” x daughter of “Better than Bolt”.  Runner up was a dark cheq hen; she’s out of “Unbreakable Bolt” x dtr “456” out of the “Daybreak” lines.

3rd fed was a cheq hen out of a son of “Unbreakable Bolt” x “Houdini” lines.

4th fed was a blue cock, he was 8th fed the week previous out of Weymouth, his sire is from Mark Nesbitt; his dam a daughter of “Houdini”.

8th and 9th fed were two  blue cocks, both off a Leo Hereman from Mick Bradley of Cumbria when paired to a daughter of “Dark Destroyer”.

10th fed was a blue hen, her sire is a grandson of “Wild Wind” and “Better than Bolt” when paired to a daughter of “Dark Destroyer”.

In the last two races Anthony was threatening this, but I wondered if he’d got it in his team to turn the tables on the likes of D. Nesbitt & Sons and the Leadbeaters; well this week he showed he has.

MARK NESBITT OF HILL RIDWARE 09 06 22

I’m ending these notes with two pieces of very sad news, I’m sorry to inform the fancy of the passing of two leading ladies of our sport here in the midlands; in a space of a few days we lost both June Yates and Cath Lycett.

June was the long time secretary of the Derby, Burton & District Federation; in it’s heyday this fed was sending up to 7,000 birds a week.  June was wife of the late Maurice and mother of Clive, M. Yates & Son were one of the top lofts in the Midlands, and Clive has carried on in the same rich vein of success and is now one of the most respected fliers in the UK. Clive lived next door to his mum and over the last few years the pigeons have taken a back seat whilst Clive cared for his mum

Then, a few days later Cath Lycett sadly passed away. Cath was a legend in the midlands region, along with her husband, the late Ken, they carried out the roles as secretaries of the Midland National Flying Club for near on 10 years, and turned the club around, more than doubling the membership. The M.N.F.C will never be as strong as when Cath was at the helm?

With Ken, and her sons, they formed a formidable partnership, again one of the top lofts in the Midlands, producing top performances in every fed they flew in, which most recently was the Burton & South Derbyshire fed.

I never heard a bad word spoken of Cath; everyone who met her came away saying what a wonderful lady.

They were both lovely ladies, and wonderful mums;  on behalf of the members of the Burton & South Derbyshire Federation condolences to both families; gone but never forgotten, rest in peace June and Cath.
