Burton & South Derbyshire Federation - 26-05-23

Burton & South Derbyshire Federation.

Difficult day for our birds out of Honiton (1), sees Kev Johnson of Hill Ridware gain his second fed win of the season.

Saturday May 20th saw 69 members from 9 clubs send 1250 birds to Honiton in Devon. Alys liberated our birds at 07-55 in a N.N.E. wind.I was expecting the leading birds to make around the 45 mph mark, but they didn’t manage this. It turned out a difficult day, with most lofts having absentees at nightfall. Yes, the wind was against them, and as the day progressed it did warm up considerably, but Alys had ‘em away in the cooler part of the day.

Yet again some members had birds arrive home injured, and there were a lot of good birds missing, including last weeks fed topper and birds with multiple first prizes. I know of birds being reported in Shropshire; Doncaster; and as far away as Castle Howard in North Yorkshire!!

I know there are peregrines all over the country, but they are more populated down the south west, and the worst place for anyone’s  birds to be hit by birds of prey is early on in the race!!  Unfortunately it’s now a regular obstacle our birds face, but fanciers are getting sick to the back teeth with it!!

Congratulations to Kevin Johnson of Hill Ridware, Kev tops the fed for the second time this season, timing in "83" a 2yo cheq hen on 1259. She was bred by Derek Nicholls out of Hereman Cuester and Van den Bulck breeding. Her sire is “Odessa” a Welsh national breeder; he’s a grandson of “Next Kittel” and “Bandit”, when paired to a daughter of "Greipel". Dam is “83” is none other that "National Bolt" winnter of the Welsh National from Battle in Sussex, she's a granddaughter of “Better than Bolt”. Las season "83" gained federation prizes along with 2nd section, 11th Open M.N.F.C Guernsey; well done Kev.
