The Joe Murphy Column - 12-05-22

The Joe Murphy Column

I have had an eventful week; on Monday I was not feeling too good, so took it easy and just downloaded all the emails and pasted them into my column. Tuesday I was not any better so we took my blood pressure which turned out to be quite low. We then contacted the surgery and I had to have more blood pressure tests done. All 3 tests were too low, so I was advised to rest and the doctor would contact me. Lo and behold we received a call at 18-10pm and advised after talking to him, to phone an ambulance and have an ENT done. We did this and I was then taken into Victoria Hospital and had to undergo more tests. Then just after midnight they informed me, I was allowed home and to contact Margaret, we never got to bed until 1am; to say it was a long day is an understatement. I’m glad to say that today I’m feeling a bit better but still taking it easy.

GPS Tracking System

I have again attached 2 of the SHU GPS tracking system of birds raced into Lanarkshire; the first one is of the Wooler race flown on the 23rd of April. With the second tracking from the Alnwick race flown on the 30th of April. You will see from the graphs the route the pigeons are taking flying home to Lanarkshire, which is quite interesting. I have spoken to the SHU secretary and hopefully he and I will receive some feedback on the tracking system as the first report is in my 6th May column.

‘The Angus federation this week were back at Wooler, a bit kinder now that cold east wind had gone; the birds were away at 08-30am into a light south wind. Would people be caught out, Oh thanks for the ETS; Willie Nicol who has only just settled his birds at his new house in Forfar called up to watch the birds with myself, so off I went to make a cuppa and on returning he shouted. ‘There`s birds at Dave Glen`s and you have one coming’, Davie would finish 3rd,4th,5th,6th and 7th with his inform widowhood cocks, my yearling would show off a few times before trapping but still ended up 13th club and Federation. However, on entering the loft I found a blue cock ‘1165’, Willie checked the clock and the blue cock would end up a clear winner on 1550.53 from last week’s winner Ian Scott, he timed a 2-year-old Hyskens van Riel which was bred by club mate Charlie Bell. Charlie is in his 80’s and recovering from some health issues; but was still at the club and told me he has 14 young bird`s which are plenty for him. Ian said ‘He has a nest pair of these birds and both hens have been very steady’. Club secretary David Liddle takes 9th club and federation plus all the pool money. Stuart Donaldson over at Blairgowrie flying 90 miles takes 10th,11th and 12th fed, so well done to him. My winner ‘1165’ is a 2-year-old roundabout cock although this is his first taste of success, he has brother and sisters which have all scored well, one brother scored twice as a y/b including 2nd fed and combine flying 214 miles. Bloodlines are Geerinckx and his dam is a direct J D Poortvliet bought direct and a goldmine at stock; she carries the Koopman blood and the Kaasboer blood. Her dam was a big winner including 1st fastest from Morlincourt 4321 birds and 15th NPO 7246 birds.

I have not been able to get a picture of the federation topper this week. We try what we can to get some publicity for the fanciers, but sometimes it’s like drawing teeth to get some info on their winning birds. Thanks once again Joe and I hope you have found the’ Skyleader GPS’ tracking information of interest, yours Archie McIntyre Dalry HS/Ayrshire federation. (Yes. I did Archie and I hope other fanciers who read my column also found this of interest)

Alex Howie 2nd & 3rd Fed Lauder 2                           Ayrshire Fed Transporter Lauder 2

Ayrshire Federation second race of the season saw us back at Lauder on Saturday 30th April with an entry of 1,925 birds for a distance of between 59 miles up to 80 miles for the north end of the federation. The race control team had the birds up and away at 07-15 into a light south west wind. The reason behind such an early liberation was due to the heavy rain forecasted to move into Ayrshire from the west for around the 10 to 11 o’clock mark. Reports from the liberation site was the birds cleared well and members also saying they were slow to start with, but in the end returns were good. Leading the way in the federation this week with a velocity of 1427.6 is Mathew Brown from the Whitletts & district club down in Ayr. I have very little information on Mathew’s winning bird, but what I do have is, he is a 2-year-old McMullan crosses Delbar bred down from birds Mathew obtained from Northern Ireland, these being Dermotts & Delbars distance birds. Picking up 2nd and 3rd federation this week on 1422.6 and 1422.4 is Alec Howie of Ardeer HS. Alec is known as ‘Mr Lauder’ in these neck of the woods for topping the federation last year, 2 weeks in a row from Lauder 1 & 2. Alex’s 2nd open winner is a blue cock. As young bird he broke both his legs and was never raced and is now aptly named “Broken Legs”. In 3rd federation place for Alex was a chequer cock bred down off his double federation winner from last year. Both pigeon’s the (2nd & 3rd federation winners) are grandsons off Alex ‘Buckingham’ section winner from 2017; containing the blood lines of Andy Miller of Edinburgh. Joe, I have also attached a photo of my club (Dalry HS) 16 crates (368 Birds) just after loading onto the Ayrshire federation transporter, yours Archie’.

Dundee Federation

Press officer Brian Donnelly writes; Good morning, Joe, for our 2nd race of the season we were back to Wooler a distance of around 77 miles for most club members. Thirteen members sent 396 birds these were liberated at 08-30 am with no wind at the liberation site. This week's winner is Billy McEwan on a velocity of 1506ypm. Billy's winner is a 6-year-old widowhood cock and he was 2nd club in last week's race. This pigeon is proving a real allrounder for Billy having scored 2nd open in the SNFC Ypres race of 2018, plus he has other good club positions. His bloodlines are Bruce McKenzie x Kipp. 2nd & 3rd club is Darren Phinn who is fairly new to the pigeon sport. His loft is located, to what most would consider an unfavourable position, however, this has not deterred Darren and he is starting to make his mark in club racing.  Darren's 2nd club on 1500 ypm is a yearling cock, bred from a Ceuster cock (Bought from William Donachie) crossed with a gift pigeon from Danny Henderson. Darren's 3rd club on 1498 ypm is a 2-year-old cock, bred from a son of Bruce McKenzie's ‘Old Mealy’ cock crossed with a Jansen hen that Darren's wife bought for him from a Peterhead fancier. As a matter of interest Joe, both Darren's timers are flown on widowhood.

Approx. 500 yards away from the official liberation site. In attendance at our liberation was former NEHU secretary David Powers who helped assist with the liberation. He was our lucky mascot as this turned out to be a fantastic race with excellent returns. News from John Baillie who writes, ‘Hi Joe, hope you are both keeping well. Enjoyed the articles over the winter months especially the John Kilpatrick article. I remember the late Jock McKinnon telling me in the late 1970's/80's to get as many yearlings over the channel as you can. Might lose a few, but they would have probably been lost later on in life anyway, just as you stated Kilpatrick had said ‘all those years ago’. However; on with the result. The birds were convoyed with Central Federation and liberated at 09-15 into a light west wind. We had 11 members from Traprain sending 583 birds. Winning the first race is Jimmy Mark, a note from Jimmy. The winner is a chequer yearling cock raced on roundabout he is the 5th bird to win from that pair they have scored in the inland nationals. Joe’s Joke

A young man and woman got married. At the time of their marriage, the husband noticed his wife carried a decently sized metal box and shoved it up at the top of their closet. Curious as he was, the wife told him to never to look in it no matter what the circumstances. Over the years, he saw that metal box in the closet, but never peered into it for the sake of his wife. One day, though, the wife had a stroke and was rushed to the hospital. As the husband sat grieving at home, he thought of the box, snatched it up, and sped to the hospital where his wife remained with her death coming soon. The husband bolted to her hospital room and pleaded and begged her to allow him to open the box by her side. "Well," she said, "I suppose now would be the right time." The husband unlatched the hook and peered inside. On one side sat two crocheted dolls, and on the other, to his surprise, sat one million pounds! "Honey, before we got married, my mother gave me this box and told me that whenever I got mad at you, I should go to the bedroom and crotchet a doll," said the wife. The husband was thrilled and thankful. He absolutely couldn't believe his wife had only been mad at him two times! "That is amazing!" said the husband to his wife. "Honey, I'm grateful beyond belief you've only been mad at me twice, but how on this earth did you manage to get one million pounds?" "Oh, honey" said the wife, "That's the money I got from selling the dolls."
