Homers Odyssey - INFC Kings Cup Report and Results

Irish Grand National Kings Cup won by Donnelly Bros -

Good to see the INFC got up and running although the Inland Nat Skibbereen was missed, an extensive history of INFC is located on pigeonnetwork.com on the green banner on the front page just click on INFC History. It needs many updates but hopefully this project is something to keep me busy over the next number of months, just keep checking for updates. This report on the Grand Nat Kings Cup will include reports penned by the various Press Officers and as usual have a list of results.

Mid Antrim Combine - INFC Saint Allouestre Old Bird National Kings Cup

The Irish National Flying Club liberated their Kings Cup birds in Saint Allouestre France on Friday 3rd July at 6.30am in light northerly winds. The best bird in the local Mid Antrim Combine area was timed by four time major National winner Danny Dixon of Dunloy. Danny timed one of only two birds recorded on the day of liberation in the Mid Antrim Combine and the only bird in the Coleraine centre at 19.28pm to win 22nd Open INFC French National on 1165. The sire of the 2yo Wilf Reid blue cock was a gift from Eamon Quigley of Donegal and the dam is off a son of 'Darkie' Wilf Reid’s number one stock cock sold for £9000 at his clearance sale. The nestmate to Danny's winner was timed at 21.16pm on the night from the Nipa Tourlaville old bird French National this year to win 10th Section & 81st Open. The Wilf Reid birds are scoring well for Danny on the channel with other birds winning 8th North Section & 12th Open Kings Cup in 2022, 3rd Open INFC Penzance YB National 2025 and 6th Section & 68th Open Nipa Plougastel OB National 2025 etc.

Chris Moore of Cullybackey timed the only other bird on the night in the Mid Antrim Combine at 20.33pm flying 506 miles to record velocity 1055 and win 60th North Section & 62nd Open. Chris penned the following - The 2yo dark cheq cock was well raced as a young bird and yearling. This season as 2 year old received one Irish race then both Dales followed by training tosses with Ivan Mawhinney.

The bird was paired and sent sitting approx. 10 days on eggs. His Sire was bred by myself containing the finest C&L Fryers long distance bloodlines which are incredibly reliable for me in French races, his grandmother was 3 times France and 6th Open King's Cup in 2016, his great grandsire was Laurence's Gold Medal winner for 4 times France.

The Dam of my pigeon is a hen on loan from Drew Caskey of Bangor, she’s a daughter of the "Producer" containing all the best of the old Jack Gilmore reds through Sid Collins and can be traced back to Jacks 2nd Open Kings Cup and Billy Erwin 'El Cid'. The Dam of the Producer is a daughter of Nyland Ashley from John Halstead 2nd Open BICC Barcelona (696 miles) being of Biss x Southwell bloodlines, he is a son of Jim Biss’ Turban which was 2nd Open NFC Pau at 650 miles.

Drew Caskeys "42" hen is also part of the breeding and has been at the forefront of his loft being a half-sister to his own 10th Open Kings Cup hen in recent years, this line carries the finest N Black and Sons bloodlines plus Jack Daniels 9th Open Kings Cup of again Jack Gilmore breeding.

I'd like to thank C & L Fryers and Drew Caskey for their kindness in providing me with such good pigeons over the years and Alan Darragh for taking my pigeons to the marking centre due to my work commitments.

Alan Darragh timed the next morning to win third in the Combine and finish 167th Open on 704. Alan a previous winner of the Kings Cup from Jersey in 1986 was fresh from winning this year's Infc Sennen Cove Yearling National just a couple of weeks ago. Chris Moore timed a second bird the next day for 4th Combine and 212th Open on 589. The sire of this bird was a Koopman cock from the late Billy Smyth of Ballymena which had won the Combine and Section for Billy from Talbenny.

Ian and Eric Stewart timed the only other bird in the Combine on the third morning to win 5th Combine and 249th Open on 370

Mid Antrim Combine Saint Allouestre Kings Cup- 1st D Dixon Rasharkin 1165, 2nd C Moore Cullybackey 1055, 3rd A Darragh Cullybackey 704, 4th C Moore Cullybackey 589, 5th Stewart Bros Randalstown 370. Mervyn Eagleson PO Mid Antrim.

INFC King’s Cup 2026 Report by PO David Black and Kevin Anderson

The winners of the 2026 INFC Kings Cup were Donnelly Bros of Newry a loft which hit an unbelievable vein of form over the three French races.

1st and 5th Open Donnelly Bros.

“Our Wee Nancy” 2026 King’s Cup Winner. The 2024 blue white flight hen showed some racing promise in 2025, winning 24th Open North Section Skibbereen National. She was then our fancied bird in the Yearling National in 2025 but narrowly missed the prizes but hit the trap racing after coming back out of the North

“Nancy” had about five inland races and no channel races before the King’s Cup. She also had some private training with Ivan Mawhinney and ourselves from Clogherhead (approx. 30 miles).

“Nancy” was raced on roundabout at the start of the year and then paired up for the King’s Cup, she was sent on young birds just hatched that morning. Sire of “Our Wee Nancy” is Mark Ewbanks cock, father of whom was a brother of C. McArdles King’s Cup winner in 2022, when paired to a sister of Mark’s 23rd Rose Bowl Winner.

The Dam is a daughter of our number one stock cock “Not Again”. He was a prize winner 2019 King’s Cup arriving home the third day injured after a hawk attack, he was unable to fly up to his nest box for about a week because he was so badly injured. We tried racing him again the following season, when he wouldn’t come home with the rest of the batch in training. We sent him to another race where he arrived home with half a tail. He was then put in stock and called “Not Again”!

This cock is now sire of “King Pin” who was 159th Yearling National, 23rd King’s Cup and 39th King’s Cup, winning a Merit award, twice in the King’s Cup prizes.

“Not Again” is also sire of “Mother’s Pride”, 40th Open INFC King’s Cup 2025 and 5th Open INFC King’s Cup 2026. Dam of “Our Wee Nancy” is our “Good Pied Hen” who was first bird home to our loft 3 times. Her mother was our Bude Open winner “Jessica” who also timed in the prizes out of St Malo the previous year. She carries the bloodlines of T. Mawhinney’s Soojens.

5th Open, clinching the Harkness Rose Bowl for best two bird average, is a hen we called “Mother’s Pride”, she was our second bird home in the hard 2025 King’s Cup race where she scored 40th Open. This hen previously returned home injured from INFC Penzance Youngbird National and flew home the following year from the Yearling National. She started this year on roundabout with about 5 inland races and no channel races. She laid early for the King’s Cup so we slipped her a hen’s egg to get her to sit longer and then a day old young bird about 5 days before she left.

Her breeding is a daughter of our number one cock “Not Again” who carries W. V. Troughton Delbar bloodlines making her an aunt of “Our Wee Nancy”. Dam of “Mother’s Pride” is a daughter of N. Black & Son’s “Rocky” who won two top 10 positions in the King’s Cup.

Our previous performances are winners of the Friendship National and the Penzance Youngbird National. Hall of fame winners with “Sophie” in 2024, 15th Open King’s Cup 2022, 22nd Open King’s Cup 2023, 136th Open King’s Cup 2024, National Champions in 2022, twice runners up National Champions. Natural Max Sport is fed to the racers with Finesse Marathon added 4 weeks before the Nationals. CEST products are also used to bring birds into condition.

2nd Open King’s Cup is Diamond Carson racing as R. Carson & Son, Banbridge. Diamond and his late father Dick were winners of the King’s Cup in 1989. Diamond’s 2nd Open bird is a blue cock, GB 24 B 59143

2nd Open R Carson & Son

This bird’s previous performances include 197th Open Penzance young bird national 2024. In 2026 he had 3 inland races plus Dale and Bude in preparation for the King’s Cup. His sire is a blue cock GB 20 B 45516 winner of 6 1sts including 1st Section 4th Open Bude and numerous other positions and is sire to several prize winners. The dam is a blue hen, GB 21 B 14588, bred for stock and is from GB 18 B 36033 which was 20th Open 3rd section St Malo 2020, a daughter of champion “Lily Penny”, 1st open and section St Malo 2020 the sire of GB 21 B 14588 is a son of Ron Williamson 2013 King’s Cup winner.

3rd Open King’s Cup is Aiden McAteer, Ballyholland. Aiden is one of the top national racers in Ireland and will delighted to be back on top in the very strong Ballyholland club. Aiden timed a blue check cock now named “Drumcove Beens”. His sire is a grandson of the “Golden Barcelona” (M. Gilbert) obtained from Gordon Bros, dam is a direct Arjan Beens, Holland bought at the Night of the Stars in Blackpool at the Stewart Wilcox sale. “Drum Cove Beens” had 3 inland races plus 1st Dale and Bude in preparation for the King’s Cup and was sent to the race sitting chipping eggs.

3rd Open A McAteer

4th Open is J. Kelly & Sons, Hillsborough and Maze. Josey timed a two year old dark check cock. The breeding is Jelle Jellema (obtained from Derek Edgar) crossed with Sagan. He was first club Dunmanway and was sent to the King’s Cup sitting 8 day eggs.

4th Open J Kelly & Sons

6th Open in the King’s Cup is A. & R. Neill, Edgarstown, an up and coming national loft. This pigeon has been a steady racer from the start, having flown Penzance Young Bird, the Yearling National and the Friendship National as a yearling, just missing out on the results. In this year’s races he received 4 inland races plus 1st Dale and trained once a week on Ronnie Williamson’s transporter and on open loft until dark before sending to the King’s Cup. He paired up in the hen’s perches which he seemed to like and was sent sitting on 5 day old young birds. The saying ‘Racing is silver, Breeding is gold’ certainly applies to this cock. The sire was bred by club mates, R and G Donaldson and is inbred to the auld cock and Greenaway’s hen. The dam was bred by Gary Benson being off his Hall Of Fame winner “Belle”. This pigeon carries 5 Hall Of Fame winners, 2 Gold medal winners and McCartney Bros 7 times French ash hen. He is soaked in French blood. The feeding is purchased off this year’s winners Donnelly Ros. This loft had 6 in the Open in the yearling national and 5 in the Open in the King’s Cup

6th Open A & R Neill

7th Open was McCracken Bros, Banbridge, a loft with a tremendous national record, having won many INFC awards. They timed a three year old blue hen bred off a gift pigeon from Jeff Greenaway. She was also 1st club Skibbereen national and 2nd club Penzance Classic. In preparation for the King’s Cup she had 4 inland, Penzance and was sent to the King’s Cup unpaired.

7th Open McCracken Bros.

8th Open was Gary Marsden, Hillsborough & Maze. This is a loft fast making itself a reputation in the big races. He timed a three year old blue check hen. She is a full sister to his bronze award winner and her sire is the super breeder Aelbrecht cock. This was her first attempt at France and in preparation for the King’s Cup she had two Dale, Bude and Penzance.

8th Open Gary Marsden’s blue cheq hen

Another notable performance in this year’s King’s Cup was that of Tommy Mooney & Son, Millvale, who timed two birds in the top ten, the partnership could consider themselves a bit unlucky having two birds in the top ten and still not winning the Harkness Rose Bowl.

9th and 10th T Mooney & Son

9th Open was a 2 year old blue WF cock and was a gift bird bred by Gary McLoughlin, Newry. Breeding is best of Willy Capper and Milne Mairs. In preparation for the King’s Cup he had Grenagh, Dale and Bude and was sent feeding a 4 day old youngster.

10th Open was a 2 year old red cock and is off a cock on loan from Tommy Speers, Malahide. Sire is Tommy’s 2nd Kings Cup paired to a hen winner of East Coast Fed from a very hard Friendship National. Dam of the red cock is a G. O’Reilly hen on loan from Ned Briscoe, Drogheda. Preparation for the King’s Cup was Grenagh, Dale and Bude and he was sent feeding a 2 day old youngster. The nest mate of the cock at 10th Open was 108th Open after flying over 14 and a half hours. Pictured following morning. Tommy junior said it was amazing to time 2 together from such a distance and they had only been timed when another cock folded for 17th in the New Championship Club race from Isigny Sur Mer in France. 3 birds in 3 minutes was some experience.

King's Cup Grand National South Section

1st South Section 31st Open – EE & S Kavanagh. Also 1st South Leinster Federation and 1st Channel Club.

1st South section EE &S Kavanagh’s blue cock

Both parents were gift birds from their late good friend Bill O'Hare of Cork/Harlow from his Mark Bulled lines.

Edward explained he has had a lot of bad luck lately. He had a visit from a pine martin, as a result lost 70 birds including channel winners and breeders of channel winners. The biggest upset was losing his check hen that won the INFC Hall of Fame and was also 2nd open in the St Malo Old Bird National, she flew France four times. Most people would have given up, but not Edward. The prize winner of the 31st Open King's Cup this year is a three-year-old blue cock. He is one of a couple of birds that survived and Edward is now rebuilding his team. The pigeon had most of the inland races and then was sent to the King's Cup sitting on 14-day old eggs. Edward feeds Natural Finesse Mixes, very little medicine, treats them for canker and adds garlic and cider vinegar in the water. He would like to say well done to those who clocked and especially to the Donnelly brothers, Richard and John on their well-deserved win.

2nd South Section 45 Open Harford and McNally of Balbriggan and East Coast Federation

2nd South section Harford & McNally

Christy's pigeon is a 2-year-old blue cock sitting on a young bird for the first time this season. The pigeon was a gift bird from his good friend Sean Parkin of Dundalk from his old Delbar lines.

Indeed, the blue cock was 2nd in the club in the INFC Yearling National the previous year. Christy feeds Beatty’s Best All Round and gives his birds cider vinegar once a week in the water. Grit and minerals are provided to the birds regularly. Christy would like to congratulate all who clocked in this difficult race.

3rd South Section 77 Open Joe Fitzgerald and granddaughter of Rathnew RPC.

3rd South section J Fitzgerald & Daughter.

Joe's prize winner is a yearling blue check w/f cock sitting on eggs for 16 days. The breeding is half Ron Fewing's and half his own strain.

His old family of pigeons were passed down from his father and had flown North Road up to Thurso, recording many winners over the years. The pigeon had flown all land races, Dale, Penzance and then the King's Cup 2026. Last year the pigeon won first in the club in the INFC Yearling National.

He feeds the Top Special Super Diet & Energy food from The Cornstore Dublin. He only gets 40 rings per season; a man that believes in quality not quantity!

Congratulations to all who clocked in the INFC King's Cup race this year. Special congratulations to the Donnelly Bros on winning this most prestigious event in the pigeon calendar.

One Gold Medal and two Hall of Fames were awarded in this year's King's Cup the details of which will be covered at a later update.
