Lanarkshire News - Blaydon race on 27/06/26

This week we have arrived at a new race point for the federation, Blaydon in Gateshead, Tyne & Wear ,North of England.

The change from the scheduled Alnwick which in summer is a busy with tourists, causing issues with the  liberation area.

Blaydon is slightly further in distance, around 109 miles rather than 95 from Alnwick.

An excellent edition for the federation website was the race controllers report and photos of the transporter sitting at the liberation site before liberation. This is excellent and allows fanciers some insight into the race conditions

The 1600 birds were liberated at 6am with the sunshine on their backs for the flight back into lower Central ,Scotland.

This week’s winners who live in the North section of the federation are R & S Peden & Wilkinson of Airdrie club .

1st North section,1st Open federation for R & S Peden

I phoned Bobby to congratulate him on his fabulous winner and get some  information on his runaway winner.

He explained that when waiting on the arrival of the pigeons he observed a small batch of racers coming from the east, initially he thought they were for him but they continued on although he noted one flicking its wings and he shouted on it to trap and it duely peeled off the others and landed. This wasn't the end of the story as she wouldn’t  trap, Bobby as everyone was getting anxious as every second passed. Over one minute passed before she timed.

Bobby said to his son Sean that she had blown her chance to win the club. At this time he didn’t realise that he had just timed 1st Open federation.

The race itself wasn't great with big gaps between returns and a good few birds missing at clock check. Pigeons that had raced from 280 miles the week previous were well off the return time. The reason isn't clear, possible the recent static in the atmosphere or possible falcon attack after liberation. Hopefully it’s better for the return for the federation in a couple of weeks.
