St Philbert Provisional Race Report

Sunday 8 th June 2025

These three great clubs came together for this race, for the second year running. It produced a birdage of some 3,734. Many fanciers and officials have talked about clubs coming together for the good of the sport and last year the BICC, BBC and CSCFC came together to race. This season they are doing the same. This was the first of 2025 and the next old bird joint races are Pau and Bordeaux.

This race produced three overall winners, Neil Jones of Sandwich, L & K Buddle of Dover and Buddy

Shipp of Bedhampton. This race report covers the Open and Section winners in all three clubs and is a combined report by Clare Norman and Mike Jackson.

Thanks go to Mircea Cioc for his sponsored photograph of the winning BICC pigeon. This is much appreciated by the club and the National winners.

The weather/race report Steve Appleby, the BICC race and weather advisor, provided the following report:

After a one-day holdover, weather conditions for this combined race of the BICC, BBC & CSCFC from

St Philbert had vastly improved. The convoy was liberated at 07:20 under broken cloud and blue skies cleared the site immediately. The convoyers reported the winds were light from the north west at the race point. Looking at the data received from the Met Buoys and wind flow charts that were recorded, winds over the Channel reached speeds of over 20 mph from the west north west. The

flight path through northern France, across the Channel and beyond was excellent, fair-weather clouds and good visibility, a good racing day. Over the history of the sport N/W winds always seem to produce good races provided the flight path is clear. This race proved to be no exception.

Wind Flow Map This report is based on members’ first bird verifications and the final result may differ.

OPEN BICC, NEIL JONES OF SANDWICH. FIRSTLY, I WOULD LIKE TO THANK EVERYONE

who contacted me, and there were loads, to congratulate me on winning the St. Philbert race. Many thanks to you all. My first bird, GB21F13832, was a dark hen bred from the old John Puddephatt pigeons that I’ve had for quite a few years now. Always thereabouts and a consistent old family of pigeons. She was previously 10 th

BBC Bordeaux in 2023. In 2024 she came home from a club trainer minus half her tail and most of one wing, so 2024 became a proper gap year for her. This year, flown on the natural system and sitting 10-day eggs, she didn’t get caught again!

My second bird, that looks to be third open, GB20F06902, is a blue cock, that’s never off the pace. He finished 3 rd

OPEN BBC NORTH-SUR-ERDRE 2024. HIS SIRE IS LES GREEN/ HARDY KRUGER AND HIS DAM, A

daughter of Mark Gilbert’s Golden Barcelona. I had 16 out of 17 home on the day, so that can’t be bad

and the convoying team got it right. Many thanks to them and thanks also to the Gravesend marking team.

WINNER FROM ST PHILBERT WITH THE BBC AND 2

OPEN BICC IS A YEARLING COCK WE NOW CALL BERT, AND HE IS

flown on our Chaos Widowhood System. He is one of the yearling cocks in the section that doesn’t have a nest box, he has a V-perch on the doors of the cock’s section, and he races back each weekend to have a run about in the hen’s section for an hour or two. As Bert never took a nesting box, he spent the whole of the race team breeding period, ‘having fun’ in the hen’s section with any other hens or cocks that didn’t pair. This was Bert’s first cross channel race of the season, having been every week previously inland down as far as Blandford 149 miles.

His breeding is a cross between our own long distance international pigeons and Gino Clicque bloodlines. His sire was bred by Gino Clicque, being a son of Golden Prince 618, a winner of 12 th

Nat Libourne 4624b, 35 th Nat Limoges 7236b etc. He in turn is a son of Golden Prince, purchased from

Steve Bennet. His dam is a daughter of our Triple Two, 1 st

Birds are fed twice a day as much as they want for 20 mins and for a second year, we are using the product range from Cest Pharma. Well done to Neil Jones on winning the race within the BICC.

It turned out to be a slower race than expected as the wind was against me, but a better performance than I was expecting. My first bird, a cock bird raced on the round-about system is bred from a direct

Congratulations to the winners in a very tight finish. It was a good race for me, with all my 17 entries home in the afternoon. My first bird was a three-year old blue chequer cock, which is one of my

Bordeaux nom birds, having flown Bordeaux last year arriving just after 8:00 pm on the day. The cocks have been celibate all season, but I played about with them the last week or so. The sire and dam

came from a kit of 10 youngsters I purchased from Mark Gilbert in 2014 from his race birds. They were

both very consistent racers. The sire, 777, won 1 st

SECTION D, 6

OPEN MARK GILBERT OF WINDSOR. WE ENTERED 40 MIDDLE DISTANCE HENS TO

compete in the race and topped up with 159 distance pigeons which needed to go to complete their training for the long races which are nearly upon us. We were so confident that the distance pigeons would not get near the middle-distance hens that we just cross nominated 10 hens back into the

BBC. Our first bird was the first of our two pool pigeons, 119. She is from a grandchild of Jan Hooymans

Harry and Gino Clicque’s Golden Prince, on the father’s side and a grandchild of Joel Verschoots

Armando (sold for 1.25million euros) and Gino Clicque’s Prince Rudy on the mother’s side.

Less than a minute later we clocked 069 a chequer hen, who was our first bird back from the last BICC

Nort-Sur-Erdre race two weeks ago, scoring 2 nd

do! We had 159 from 199 back on the day and 11 back the following morning. Congratulations to Neil

His first pigeon, a blue chequer cock, GB23N63348, was raced hard as young bird and competed almost every week. Followed by a strenuous yearling programme in the National and Classic, culminating in a last race from Tarbes NFC as a yearling. Bred from two New Laureaat based birds, which were purchased online. Lee and Guy Reed bought the birds from the same source, but on their arrival, Guy promptly offered Lee the cock bird to pair with one of the two hens that Lee had purchased. They are the sire and dam of 63348. One may hope that this may be the next, Super 48.

The L & M Dyer partnership included Lee’s mother Maureen who has now passed over. She would be so proud of this, the youngest racing man we have on the Island, and his recent performances have been excellent.

She clocked in with a total flying time of 10 hours, 46 minutes and 7 seconds achieving a velocity of

1172 yards per minute, which equates to an average speed of 39.9 miles per hour. An exceptional performance under testing conditions!

Kept on a widowhood system year-round, Macey is clearly thriving under Phil's dedicated care and training regime. Being the first bird back to the loft, she has proven her class and determination. The hallmarks of true long-distance champions. Phil commented, ‘I'm very pleased with her result and look forward to racing her again in the future.’ A fantastic achievement and one to watch in the races to come. Congratulations to Phil and Macey on a top-tier performance.

3 rd North West Section, 166

th

OPEN, JOHN RODWAY OF RUSHWICK. THIS WAS ANOTHER VERY TESTING RACE FOR

the NW section due to the strong WNW wind on the day. My first bird was the same blue chequer two-year-old cock who was my first bird a fortnight earlier in the BICC Nort -Sur- Erdre. The bird is flown on the natural system. My returns on the day were four out of eight and they were well spaced out and well flown. Thanks to the marking team at Steventon.

And that concludes another successful combined race, with more to come very soon. Three great clubs working together for the benefit of the fancier and the sport.
