Coutances National 1 st OPEN 1 st SECTION C Peter Quainton from Chippenham With “Little Blue” The Heavens were shining down on us for the first race of the season. Blue skies & sunshine, a touch chilly but much better then what was forecast at the beginning of the week. The entry for our first race for 2016 saw 208 members sending 1,858 birds. After speaking with Steve Appleby, Nigel liberated the convoy at 8.05am in to a light northerly wind, with the wind increasing as the day went on. All birds cleared the site well, going up over the Cathedral and out of site. We couldn’t have wished for a better start to the season with nearly all members who sent verifying and returns being good. From the verifications it seemed to be a fair race with both sides of the Country timing early. We had 3 members in SECTION E TIMING IN AFTER 9 HOURS OR MORE FLYING OVER 300 MILES WHICH IS GOOD GOING FOR this early in the season. On behalf of the marking stations I would like to thank all the markers and helpers for your support. The first race of the season is always the worst one for marking. If anyone is willing to help with the marking we are always grateful (even if it whilst you are waiting for your birds to be marked). Remember, once you have entered the race, you can send extra birds on the day of marking. Many congratulations to our first National Winner of the season Peter Quainton from Chippenham 1 st OPEN 1 st SECTION C. PETER RESUMED RACING PIGEONS AFTER MOVING TO Wiltshire in 2001 and joined the Chippenham Homing Society, he has been top flyer almost every year since then. He flies roundabout system for old birds and darkness system for young birds. Young birds are mostly Van Loon-Jansen /Vandenabeele and old birds Bricoux-Jan Aarden. Peter’s winner “Little Blue” is bred from: Sire blue Jansen Van Loon and the Dam blue Vandenabeele. She has raced all programmes from a young bird in 2015. Won 3 rd Messac & 5 th Niort as an old bird. Peter Quainton By only 2 yards and taking 2 nd OPEN 1 st SECTION D IS CHRIS GADSDEN FROM TODDINGTON. Chris Gadsden continued his remarkable run of success with his Coormans and Sapins bloodlines by taking provisional 1 st Sect D, 2 nd OPEN IN THE BBC OPENER FROM COUTANCES with a 2yo Dark Cock. This bird was sent to the race only two days after being separated from its mate and put onto widowhood. He was very lightly raced as a YB and put on natural as a yearling. He performed consistently and culminated his 2015 yearling season in the very tough MNFC race from Vire where he finished a creditable 43 rd Sect SE 679 th OPEN OUT OF 6,344 BIRDS, VELOCITY 1091YPM. THIS SOLID WORKMANLIKE PERFORMANCE persuaded Chris that there was more potential there to be developed as a 2yo. Something else even more compelling also convinced Chris that he would do well and that was his breeding. There used to be an old saying often used in pigeon circles, “bred in the purple”: well this one certainly is. His sire, a 2010 rung bird, was bred from a Belgian rung hen bought from Denis Sapin at a UK sale before his tie up with Bob Fenech. In 2015 as a 5yo this cock came out in successive races and won 1 st Sect, 167 th OPEN MNFC CARENTAN, 8,900 BIRDS and 2 nd SECTION, 15 th OPEN MNFC CARENTAN (FOUGERES), 8,359 BIRDS. The Dam of the BBC SECTION WINNER IS A COORMANS BRED DOWN FROM ORIGINAL BIRDS OBTAINED BY CHRIS FROM LOUIS Coormans’ Blackpool sale at the Sheraton Hotel. The dam of his Section winner was tragically amongst 40 birds killed by a fox which got into the loft in June 2015. Before her untimely demise she was kept mostly as a widowhood hen, but in 2014 she won 1 st Sect 24 th OPEN MNFC VIRE, 5081 BIRDS, IN A RACE HELD IN LATE JULY AND PICKED UP 2 nd Sect 9 th OPEN IN THE BBC FOUGERES OH RACE HELD IN SEPTEMBER WHICH CHRIS ALSO WON WITH ANOTHER Cooremans hen. Chris described the breeding as 75% Coormans and 25% Sapin/Sootjen. I handled the 1 st Sect D winner and he is exactly what Chris looks for in a pigeon: wedge shaped, powerful and showing one tail feather. He is very much like his sire and typical of this family which continually throws out pigeons capable of winning top prizes. Chris confirmed that the aim of his breeding is to fly the nationals. Chris Gadsden has had more than his fair share of problems with predators in the past and 2016 is no exception. Living on a farm he keeps an open loft in the early part of the year. The sparrow hawks have taken 19 birds this year. Some killed, some injured but many will never fly again. Perversely, Chris said that the hawks have played a part in getting his birds fit as they fly off at the slightest hint of an attack and respond instantly to alarm calls by blackbirds. But it is not all good news as they now also sit on the house roof and have to be tempted down. Ever resourceful, Chris has faced his difficulties positively, as apart from the 2 nd OPEN AND SECTION WIN IN THE BBC, HE ALSO WON THE LEAGRAVE CLUB EVENT FROM EXETER on the same day. Chris Gadsden Ray Dibben from Poole is 1 st SECTION B 3 rd OPEN. MY SECTION WINNER WAS BRED BY MYSELF from a pigeon from my friend Scott Storie, crossed with a Van-Hee Busschaert hen. The blood line came from Louella Stud. This is the first time I have flown in the BBC after moving home many times. I have now settled in Hamworthy and am now trying to build a family of channel pigeons. I would like to thank Scott Storie for all his help on feeding birds for channel racing, also to thank my friend and silent partner Lou the fisherman Wateridge for all his help looking after the birds while I'm at work and also my wife Tina for supporting me. Ray Dibben, Lou the Fisherman and Jess 4 th OPEN 2 nd SECTION D IS CHITTY BROTHERS ((BRIAN AND DICK) FROM KINGS LANGLEY. Our first bird was one of the old Koopman family which are responsible for many good CLUB, FED AND NATIONAL POSITIONS. This year so far the birds have been coming very well but trapping has been very poor and has cost us some good Club and Fed positions, having said that the bird from the B.B.C never lost a second. We fly in the Box Moor H.S. which maybe a small club but takes a lot of winning, with members winning many good National positions etc. We would like to congratulate the winner and well done to Chris for winning the section. Brian & Dick Chitty 5 th OPEN 3 rd SECTION D IS MR & MRS MICK DICKINSON & SONS FROM HEMEL HEMPSTEAD. We clocked a 2 year old blue bar widowhood cock bred from the stock loft. The sire of this bird being a John & Claude Wheeler Janssen and the dam a De Rauw Sablon purchased at the Telford Show in 2012. The pigeon was lightly raced as a young bird and yearling, this race being only his 3 rd trip across the channel. Good returns were had on the day, with 9 out of the 10 sent being home. The second bird clocked being a full brother to this 5 th OPEN PIGEON. We race all old birds (cocks and hens) on the widowhood system. Club racing in the competitive Boxmoor H.S. alongside the likes of Chitty Bros who were 4 th OPEN IN THIS RACE. We would like to extend our congratulations to the winners, and thanks to the workers at Walkern marking station and all involved in making this race, a good first channel race. We look forward to the next race. Stuart & Mick Dickinson 2 nd SECTION C AND PROBABLE 4 th SECTION AS WELL IS MARTIN WILLIAMS FROM HEREFORD. MY first bird is a six year old widowhood cock. He is a Koopman x Roodhooft off the only Koopman in my stock loft. The dam is a daughter of the famous 036, probably one of the best pigeons for Andre Roodhooft. This pigeon was a late bred, so not raced in his first year. As a yearling he went around the world and back, so thinking he had all this experience, I decided to keep him. He has won 3 x 1st’s, one being Carentan last year, 1 st Fed by 25 yards. Also last year I sent him to Tarbes with the NFC, and got him back on the third day. My second bird of 5 entries was my pooled pigeon, so it was good to see him only 1 minute behind my first bird. The sire is a son of the famous Mustang, another very good pigeon for Andre. The dam is the replacement hen, a real gold mine. This 2 year old cock damaged his wing as a yearling, so I only lightly raced him. I see big potential for this pigeon with a bit of luck. Both birds had tried really hard with red wattles. All 5 were home by the end of the day. Martin Williams 1 st arrival 2 nd arrival Runner up in Section B is Tony Swain from Dorchester. Provisional 10 th OPEN, 2 nd SECTION IS TONY SWAIN OF CAME, NEAR DORCHESTER WHOSE TWO-YEAR-OLD WIDOWHOOD COCK was bred by friend Nick Stevens from Swain originals crossed with birds from another fancier friend and top flier Lawrence Cowley of nearby Godmanstone. This cock flew well as a yearling winning 7 th SECTION, 27 th OPEN WITH THE BBC FROM Messac, along with 28 th SECTION FOUGERES, 12 th SECTION ANCENIS AND 11 th SECTION SAINTES ALL with the NFC. From Saintes it was also second in the strong Weydor Specialist Club where Tony was top prize winner last season. Because Tony is a shepherd and lambing is in full swing until mid-April, the pigeons have to take a back seat until things quieten down on the farm and as a result the widowers’ training started only ten days previously with one 20-mile toss from Yeovil. Then just six of the 36-strong widower team went straight in to Littlehampton for an 80- miler with the Dorset Fed. The Coutances pigeon was first back to the loft, although 20 minutes behind the club winners, and he again led the way when the same six went across the water with the BBC. “My old birds don’t get much training these days because they’re always getting hit by peregrines,” explained Tony. “Even from the one Yeovil toss they were all coming back in singles and twos and were very jumpy. When you talk to other fanciers they all seem to be losing a lot of pigeons, even experienced ones, from relatively short training tosses so you have to ask yourself if it’s worth the risk. “As long as they are fit and flying well around home, the good ones should be able to make it back from a 50-80 mile club race even if they are a bit behind the leaders in the early races. “I had a one and a half hour wait for my second bird from Coutances but then they were dropping in every few minutes and I ended with five out of six on the day.” Tony Swain 1 st SECTION J WE HAVE STEVE COXELL FROM ONGAR. FIRSTLY I'D LIKE TO THANK THE PEOPLE IN charge of the liberation and all at Walkern marking station, fantastic lib and brilliant marking, cheers guys . The pigeon I timed was a yearling mealy hen now named TAKE THAT by good friend Paddy Kelly, flown full widowhood. Because of work commitments and little spare time etc my hens only ever fly out at home roughly once or twice a week. For the most part they are taken to work with me in the morning and trained back to the shed, usually around 30 miles + , also having a weekly toss from the coast with my local training club the M11. She was bred by Paddy Kelly of Harlow. I would like to say thanks to Paddy as this is the second pigeon he has bred me to achieve a great result in National level, the other being 7 th OPEN 6,500B NFC MESSAC. The sire is a red black splash cock bred by good friends the Wilton's of Chadwell St Mary. It was raced north and south by Adam Wilton out to 500 miles in both directions always showing on hard days and being a very reliable racer, bloodlines are Kirkpatrick x Ver Heye that can be traced back at the Wilton's lofts to the 80s. The dam was bred by myself from Paddy Kelly's 11 flighted champion Lerwick blood lines back in 2013 and given back to Paddy to race. She's proved herself as a breeder now as well as a racer having scored at National level herself. Steve Coxell Keith Rhodes from Telford is 1 st SECTION E. THE 4 YEAR OLD DARK GABY VANDENABEELE cock is raced on widowhood and was bred by Graham Hancock of Telford down from the lines of shadow he had got off his good friends Jack walker and M D Evans. The cock has been a very good racer winning 5 x 1 st and taking many other positions in CLUB, FED AND NATIONAL RACES. EVERY YEAR HE HAS RACED INCLUDING AS A YOUNG BIRD HE HAS also been unlucky as he has been hawked twice as a 2 year old and 3 year old finishing his season early on both occasions. Last year he was 9 th OPEN BBC CARENTAN BEFORE BEING HAWKED IN HIS NEXT RACE WITH THE NFC. This year the cock had 2 races taking 4 th and 3 rd beaten by loft mates and was well fancied for this race being pooled through in section and open including noms. Keith Rhodes Tony & Carol Welch from Chichester are the Winners of Section G. GB15N03692 is a blue bar cock and was bred from a Bosua X and Van Osch line. This pigeon was a gift to me as one of a group of pigeons kindly given when I had a fly away in 2014 by Ian Crammond & Nigel Langstaff. Tony and Carol Welch 1 st SECTION A IS STEVE & YVETTE HARRIS & DAUGHTER LAUREN FROM PORTCHESTER. I WOULD like to congratulate P Quainton on winning first open and also all the other section winners. We have named this Vandenebeele blue hen “Jessie”. Some of her previous results are 1 st Fed kingsdown 2013, 12 th Fed Guernsey 2014. 10 th Fed Kingsdown 2015, 7 th SECTION 27 th OPEN CSCFC MESSAC & 4 th Fed Poitiers. Steve Harris 2 nd SECTION A IS BUDDY SHIPP FROM PORTSMOUTH. THE PIGEON IS A BLUE HEN ON ITS FIRST EVER RACE, IT IS A GRAND DAUGHTER OUT OF CHAMPION RAY WHICH IS A KEES BOSUA PIGEON. I'D LIKE TO say well done to Steve Harris on winning the Section and a thankyou to my Mrs and daughter for all the help they give me during the week. Without them I wouldn't be able to do what I do, thanks again, buddy. Lily Mae Shipp 2 nd SECTION E IS ANDREW MCKINNELL FROM TELFORD. MY NAME IS ANDREW MCKINNELL FROM Telford. I began racing pigeons from a young age along side my father Jock McKinnell. I recently rejoined the sport after a long break, and have been involved again for the last four years. This is the first time I have flown in the British Barcelona Club, and I was very happy to of came 2 nd SECTION, WITH MY THREE YEAR OLD CHEQUER HEN WHICH IS A KOOMAN breed. AndrewMcKinnell 2 nd SECTION J IS ROY ROWLAND FROM HORNCHURCH. ROY’S PIGEON IS A YEARLING HEN ON HER first channel race. She was sent to a couple of inland races earlier as trainers and went to Coutances sitting 10 day eggs. She was raced as a young bird and although she came consistently well to the loft she was never timed. On one side her breeding reflects Roy’s excellent Soontjen family which has brought him a lot of success and this hen is a Granddaughter of one of his good performing cocks that raced North and South and was 5 th LNRC Stonehaven as well as 13 th LSECC Bergerac. On the other side she is a Granddaughter of Dave & Garry Heywood’s champion breeder, “John Joe”, who is the sire of many top racers and grand sire of two 1 st OPEN NATIONAL winners. A hen to watch for. Roy Rowland 2 nd SECTION G IS DEREK REID FROM WEYBRIDGE. GB15N29201 BLUE PIED COCK. THE SIRE IS a full brother to “LADY GAGA” who won 8 x 1 st for Jo Vangeel which is an inbred son of “Late Tom” Jos Soontjes. I purchased this pigeon from Alan Jones in Wales. Dam is great grandaughter of my N.F.C. WINNER 2OO5. This was 29201 3 rd RACE THIS YEAR BEING 6 th and 7 th to the loft in 2 previous races. He was a consistent young bird last year having 5 races including B.I.C.C. young bird and the NFC young bird National. Elaine says he is too good looking to be a good racer so I think we should call him “Filmstar”, after his illustrious Grandmother. Derek Reid Cherbourg at 9am (GMT) Saturday morning . Convoyers Report. The first race of the season saw one of the roughest channel crossings I have had in many years, On arrival at Quistreham docks we were met with continuous rain and strong winds all the way to Coutances, this lasted all day until early evening. A call was made to Steve Appleby our weather advisor assuring me that Saturday would be a much better day and that we should have a good race. Saturday dawned with very high cloud moving to the east but at ground level the light wind was due North and by 06:00 the only cloud was far to the east, after calls to Steve and Clare we prepared the lorry for liberation and by 07:45 the sun was warming up nicely, but at 08:00 we could see that the cloud that had moved to the east was heading back our way at a rate of knots so we had them away at 08:05 clearing very well to the North. The journey back to Cherbourg saw light North winds and clear blue sky and the viability out to sea was perfect and the return channel crossing was the complete opposite to the outward journey. Once again Steve got it spot and all indications were that it was a good start to the 2016 season. Nigel Rigiani. Weather Report. At first light as forecast the heavy cloud and rain over the Cherbourg peninsula quickly moved away south eastwards. This development allowed Nigel our convoyer to liberate the BBC convoy at 08:05 into clear blue skies. The channel was clear with good visibility. Wind direction over the open sea NNW averaging speeds of 15 mph as recorded by the metrological buoy moored central channel. Temperatures rose to a maximum of 12C during the morning. Except for north western regions most of England was under blue skies and broken cloud but as the day progressed some heavy showers developed. The northerly element in the wind resulted in a steady race producing working velocities. Steve Appleby. Race /weather advisor Telephone & website verifications which may be subject to change.
