Bordeaux National 1 st OPEN 1 st SECTION B Tony Stephens from Parkstone With “Annie” The journey to Bordeaux saw a collaboration with the Central Southern Classic Flying Club for the first time with 177 members sending 1,030 birds of which 351 were duplicated from the Classic in to the BBC. Between the two organisations the total amount of actual pigeons sent was 1,434 birds. Working together from both sides the Race Advisors Roger Hurst and Clive Merrills held off on the LIBERATION BY ONE DAY DUE TO THE WEATHER CONDITIONS ON SATURDAY WITH THE BIRDS BEING RELEASED ON Sunday at 6.15am. Roger Hurst/ Clive Merrills: The birds were liberated at 6.15am into a broken sky with a very light Westerly breeze and very good visibility. Birds cleared immediately and last seen heading north in one bunch. The forecast is as follows. The weather through France is mainly sunny with some cloudy parts and a variable West to SW wind which increases as the birds come up though France. The Channel is clear with a West to South Westerly wind of 15 to 20 mph. Into the UK this continues with more cloud later in the afternoon with some isolated showers. Visibility is given as good to very good over the whole route. Temperatures are of no concern at a maximum of low to mid 20 degrees centigrade. As always our thanks and appreciation go to our marking stations for all their hard work in assuring everyone is kept safe whilst the birds are being marked. Considering the strong West/ South West in the wind it is very unusual to have 6 sections out of the 8 sending to be in the top eight of the provisional, well done to you all. Well done to all who timed on the Monday during the rainstorms and to all the further flying members whose pigeons worked hard to get home. Warmest congratulations to our Bordeaux National Winner Tony Stephens of Parkstone 1 st OPEN 1 st SECTION B. I WAS PLEASED AND SURPRISED TO SEE MY NAME AT THE TOP OF THE LEADERBOARD. THE PIGEON (Annie) I timed is a blue yearling hen paired to another hen, sent on a one day old baby. She has been raced mainly from the West Country and had one channel race from Messac with the Classic. She is a Vandenabeele, her father has one the Fed 4 times for me, twice from Fougeres and twice from Carentan. The mother was my best young bird in 2018 winning the Dorset Fed Breeder Buyer and scoring 6 times in the first 10 in our club. They originate from Brian Shipley and C.B and C. Harris. Well done to everybody who timed in on a hard day. Tony Stephens 1 st SECTION G 2 nd OPEN PHIL WEEDON & SONS FROM UCKFIELD. MAY WE FIRST THANK YOU AND YOUR TEAM for all the organisation that has been required to get this season up and running since lockdown was eased. We can’t believe how hard you work keeping up with the updates coming as birds arrive. Thank you. Also we'd like to congratulate all who have timed in on this difficult race and especially Tony Stephen's on his 2 nd SECTION WIN IN SUCCESSION AND HIS OPEN WIN THIS WEEKEND. Here is a little bit of information about the Blue Hen. Her Sire is from a Grandson of Raoul Verstraete's Topstar and a Grandaughter of Hooyman's Harry. He was bought at Blackpool a few years ago. The Dam was a gift from James Parker from JPS Lofts and was bred down from Pros Roosen's Blauw Prins. This was only her 2 nd time across the channel. Last year she flew BBC Cholet but homed 2 days late. This year she has had 5 inland races up to 266 miles and has been consistently one of our first birds home. She was our 1 st bird from last weekend's Okehampton 180 mile dash and really fresh and keen on her cock on return so we felt that we should basket her for Bordeaux. Phil Weedon’s Hen 1 st SECTION D 3 rd OPEN DAN CRICK & SON FROM LUTON. BLUE HEN GB19L09003. FLYING ALMOST 500 miles on the day is an achievement in itself, but winning the Section and taking 3 rd OPEN BBC WITH A yearling makes people sit up and take notice. Dan Crick’s “WhatsApp” lit up on race night when word went round the Leagrave club members and the congratulations just kept coming. There was no fluke about this performance. The Sire of this medium size blue hen is a Mealy cock which won 25 th OPEN BBC FOUGERES FOR DAN. THE DAM WAS PURCHASED AT A BICC AUCTION FROM THE DOVER LOFTS of H & P Archibald. The breeding is from “The Proof” which won 2 nd and 3 rd OPEN TARBES IN consecutive years. Since moving to Luton two years ago and joining the Leagrave Club, Dan Crick’s main priority has been National racing. He comes from a family steeped in pigeon racing and wishes to thank them for the support they gave him when setting up on his own in Luton. He would particularly like to thank Colin Crick of Stotfold and his son Adam. He also sends thanks to his former racing partner Andy Baron of Offley. Andy and Dan won 6 th OPEN MIDLANDS NATIONAL Bordeaux in a very hard race with no day birds. Finally, and not to be forgotten Dan thanks his Loft Manager, his son Harry, aged 5. Harry is what you would call an active club member on race nights. Dan Crick 2 nd SECTION D 4 th OPEN DENNIS BAKER OF MAIDENHEAD. THIS TWO YEAR OLD BLUE BAR COCK IS OF RAUW Sablon blood, being a grandson of 1 st International Bordeaux for Eric Limbourg and “Going or Gold” 1 st CSCFC Carentan for Roger Lowe. Dennis Baker 1 st SECTION A 5 th OPEN JIMMY WEARN & ERIK NEILSON OF RAMSDEAN. OUR BLUE HEN PROVISIONAL 1 st SECTION 5 th OPEN from the Bordeaux race now called Ramsdean Clare. Her breeding on the sire’s side is Herman Ceusters and on the dam side is John Gerrard. She has been raced every other week with her last race being Messac. All our race birds have been raced celibate this season and results have steadily been improving in recent weeks. Just like to congratulate everyone else who clocked especially our good friend Roger Lowe who was immediately on the phone to congratulate us as we were also entered in the Classic Bordeaux race in which we won. Erik Neilson 6 th & 10 th OPEN ROGER LOWE FROM READING. MY FIRST TWO ARRIVALS ARE NEST SISTERS BRED FROM THE “Main Man” winner of 1 st Fed and 2 nd & 3 rd OPEN NATIONAL FLYING CLUB SAINTES. HE IS SIRE TO MANY winners including “The One” winner of 1 st Central Southern Classic Guernsey and “Main Son” WINNER OF 1 st Sigogne National FC. Main Man is a son of “My Little Diamond” winner of 1 st NFC in her only ever race being of the de Klak blood lines, sire is a direct Marcel Aelbrecht Magic Man de Raw Sablon blood lines. Dam of the sisters is “Lucky Supreme” given to me as a egg by Mark Gilbert from his Southfield Supreme winner of the Dax International for Mark. Lucky Supreme as always paired to the Main Man so is the dam of many winners. The first hen “Main 615” was not earmarked to go as I lost one of the eight I’d entered training so she took its place, as it had been my first old bird back from the previous weeks race from Messac with the National. Sending eight double widowhood hens having 3 home on the night and 3 the next morning it turned out to be a reasonable race so hopefully all had good returns (Where are you Gilbert). Roger Lowe 7 th OPEN PAUL DAVIES FROM JERSEY. THE HEN I TIMED “LYNNE” IS A 2 YEAR OLD SITTING 14 DAYS. THIS was my first race this year having only been able to train off of a boat at Granville 30 miles, then jumped in to Bordeaux 304 miles. This hen was given to me from Keith Duffin which I am very grateful for. Thank you to Clare for all her hard work and Bill Edwards for collecting the Jersey birds from Portsmouth docks and taking them to the marking station. Paul Davies 1 st SECTION J 8 th OPEN ROB & ANDREW WILTON (D WILTON & SON) OF CHADWELL ST MARY. THE pigeon we clocked is a two year old cock flown on the widowhood system. He’s a Brockamp pigeon his dam is a grand daughter of Euro Diamond and Perpignan 06 she has been a very good breeder for us breeding many top National performers. His sire is also a grandson of Euro Diamond on one side and has also been a very good breeder for us both of them were bred by the Jutla Brothers from East London in 2011. Ee had Bordeaux in mind for this cock from the start sending him up to Poitiers with the BICC in preparation and he flew well being there and never made any mistakes every Channel race he had this year. We are very happy to win Section J and had a very good days racing on the day winning both our clubs and the strong Thames North and Eastern Counties aswell as our top performance in the BBC. Well done to all those that timed birds in on the day in what turned out to be a tough race all over. 2 nd SECTION A 9 th OPEN KEN & SUE FRANCIS OF SOUTHAMPTON. OUR PIGEON IS A 3 YEAR OLD BLUE chequer cock, flown on the traditional Widowhood system. He had only two races with the Southampton & District Fed prior to going to Messac with the CSCFC, and then on to Bordeaux. He is a Billy Lynch Casaert; the Casaerts being the only family now housed at our lofts. Rob, Andrew and Louie Wilton Ken Francis 2 nd SECTION G 11 th OPEN DON HARVEY OF DOVER. FIRST OF ALL I'D LIKE TO SAY CONGRATULATIONS TO TONY Stephens on a fine win, also thanks to Clare and Martin Norman for all the work they put in. My first bird is a 2 year old widowhood cock who has shown some promise in the few races he has flown this year. He had a month out last season from his first channel race. He is bred from a direct Menne & Daughter cock who is a son of Christine - she was 1 st National, 3 rd International from Pau. The dam is one of the first five that I bought from my mate Bert Shepherd being from his family of Ko Nipius/Jan Aarden. Don and Elaine Harvey 2 nd SECTION B 12 th OPEN MARK & JULIE GOWER OF FORDINGBRIDGE. CONGRATULATIONS TO TONY Stephens on a great result topping off a great season for him. My bird is a yearling cock flown on a roundabout system. He is a result of some co breeding with Andy Parsons as it’s four grand parents are 4 th , 2 nd & 5 th OPEN TARBES NFC AND THE FOURTH BEING A top stock cock originating from Keith Bush. This cock has flown 3 inland races and then the BBC Messac where he homed with so much energy left that I knew he would go to Bordeaux next. I like to use this race to send some yearlings to test out some stock pairs. My next bird at 06.23 is a full sister to the first bird which is pleasing. Let’s hope they go on to Tarbes next year and the job they were bred for as more often than not BOP stop them achieving this. Last years section winner and 4 th OPEN WAS TAKEN BY BOP !! Mark Gower 1 st & 2 nd SECTION C MRS JANET WILCOX (JANET & KEN) FROM MIDSOMER NORTON, RADSTOCK. Congratulations to winners to Tony Stephens in the BBC and Wearn Bros & Neilson in the Central Southern Classic in what turned out another difficult race for many due to the lack of sun on route total cloud cover which results in only the very fittest bird coming through. Our first bird was a widowhood cock very consistent for several seasons in Classic races. It is bred from winning lines being 3 parts Geoff Kirkland old lines Desmet/ Bowen line from his days at Coalport. We have preserved these lines now for 25 years and at no time have they let us down with introductions from Tom Sherwood’s (Champion Jack) twice 2 nd OPEN NFC SAINTES. THE COCK WE timed is g.grandson of Jack. Good pigeons have also been exchanged with our friend Dave Vowles of Street. Our second timer was a gift bird from Fil & Karen Travetti when they decided like many other to leave the fancy, they bred him and it won the Paulton breeder /buyer race in 2017. It was gifted to us on conditions we race him on. Lightly raced till this year he had come well from Messac and Poitiers this season. Finally on behalf of all fanciers here in this area we must thank Clive & Jill Rogers for the way they have organised their premises for marking, without them we are sure it would have been almost impossible to compete during the pandemic. Janet & Ken Wilcox 2 nd SECTION H WILLIE HEALY FROM JERSEY. WELL DONE TO THE WINNER AND ALSO MY PIGEON FRIEND PAUL Davies for winning the section and his open position. My pigeon is a three year old chequer pied cock sent sitting on four day egg, he was my timer from Bordeaux last year. His sire is a Kirkland cross Janssen pigeon, his damn is a Van Wan Roy cross Scottish blood, personally speaking after the time in the basket, my birds were in good condition on their return. To all those involved in the BBC thank you on behalf of the Channel Island pigeon fanciers, and thank you to Clare. Willie Healy 1 st SECTION E TEAM AUREL (AUREL VOICULESCU) OF TELFORD. THERE SHE IS, NELA MY BEAUTIFUL HEN, 1 st SECTION E (OVER 500MILES) FROM BORDEAUX NATIONAL, 540MILES WITH BRITISH BARCELONA CLUB BBC. What a gallant hen in such a difficult race! She flew her heart out through a wall of rain on Monday morning with a velocity of 878ypm. The next bird clocked in Section E was timed nearly 4 hours later. What is more amazing is that Nela was never raced as an young bird, yearling or 2 year old, she was only basket trained to the South Coast. This year, as a 3 year old, she completed 4 inland races and one Channel race from Carentan. She is flown on a roundabout system to Bordeaux. I dedicate this win to my childhood mentor Nelu Vasile, who passed away last year. Rest in peace Nea Nelu, your marathon bloodlines are the foundations of my loft! Special thanks to my loft manager Cristi, with whom I share the same philosophy on racing and being patient with pigeons. Also to Bob Besant for his calming influence for this race. Very impressed with John Garvey at Penkridge marking with the organisation of basketing and thank you Clare Norman the BBC secretary for putting up with my pestering emails. The most beautiful thing I experienced is the camaraderie in the sport. Thank you Jeremy Davies, Anthony Besant, Wayne Jones, Chris Balson, Mark Bulled, Kevin and Lee Buddle, Geoff and Catherine Cooper, Cosmin Darda, Stewart Reed, Gica Stanca, Barry Winter. Without your guidance and support I would be lost by now. Team Aurel (Aurel Voiculescu) 2 nd SECTION J MARK BULLED OF HARLOW. THIS IS A YEARLING WIDOWHOOD HEN WHO BREEDING IS HALF OF my Legacy family. The dam is from Lee & Kevin Buddle through Tom and Elsa. Our furthest flyers competing from Bordeaux is Noel & Adam Gaunt from Leeds 2 nd SECTION E flying 613 miles. We are a father and son partnership flying as Noel & Adam Gaunt from Leeds. Our bird has previously been 8 th Heavy Woollen fed from Poitiers 513 miles on the day in 2017, 7 th Leeds Amal Poitiers on the day 2018, 7 th Leeds Amal Poitiers 2019. She was going to be our sole NFC Pau candidate but as the Combines 500 mile race was cancelled we decided to join the BBC and send our 500 & 700 birds (7 in total) to Bordeaux 613 miles to us. The hen is bred from a full brother to our first clocking from the only other time we sent to Bordeaux that time with the MNFC when we got 5 of our 7 on the day finishing 5 th & 6 th SECTION, 31 st & 32 nd OPEN. THE DAM WAS purchased from a charity auction as a youngster from Brian Holland from Keighley and is a granddaughter of Pennine Heights of Shackleton & Son. Mark, Abbie & Charlotte Bulled Neil and Adam Gaunt Next in line to Janet Wilcox in Section C is Clive & Wendy Merrills of Swindon. Congratulations to the winners and all those that timed in on the day. As one of Race advisors I was somewhat disappointed at the number of birds that made it on the day. I had hoped the weather was more in their favour than it appears to have been. I am however pleased at the number of arrivals on the next day given the rain and wind that covered the country in the morning. The pigeon is a Deweerdt/Jan Aarden having her third race, two inland and Messac two weeks ago. As with all my birds she was celebate but had paired to another hen, no eggs, having them taken away after laying. The sire is a gift from Guy Reed (IOW) and the dam a 4 year old which as this is written is on her way to Barcelona with the BBC.
