<pre><pre>Wadebridge National 1 st OPEN 1 st SECTION B John Halstead of Gillingham With “Nyland Wade” At the end of last season no one could have foreseen what was to come in the first few months of the New Year. We were all planning our breeding pairs and dreaming of winning the big one in 2020. In March we were locked down and couldn’t anticipate when racing would start. Wind on 3 months and thank goodness we have finally reached our first race. Due to the Government guidelines on travel Wadebridge was on the agenda in order to at least get the pigeons up and running. The first marking was always going to be a headache for the marking stations as everything was new to us making sure we had the correct procedures in place for social distancing etc and also there were existing venues we couldn’t use but luckily we had great members stepping up to the mark and offering their help, premises and club headquarters for us to use. Thank you to everyone involved at the Radstock, Southampton, Watchfield, Penkridge, Brighton and Bovingdon and also to the members for your patience. The 1,280 birds sent by 121 members were liberated at 7am in to an East North East wind. All positions are provisional until the paperwork is checked Even racing Inland you still see previous National and Classic Winners still at the forefront of the result. The winner of our first race of the season 1 st OPEN 1 st SECTION B. A BLUE yearling widowhood cock bred and raced by John Halstead of Gillingham and now named “Nyland Wade” held his line to make a speed of just over 43½ mph to take the first National win of 2020. His sire was Ruby’s Lad, himself a winner of 1 st SECTION 42 nd OPEN NFC Saintes 3,187 birds as a yearling in 2014, also into a NE wind. His dam was purchased in 2017 from Hawkins and Evans and is a granddaughter of ‘Pre Olympic’. The Ruby line has been very successful in National and Classic competition with at least six top three National and Classic performances and this bloodline goes all the way back to M &amp; D Evans’ original Vandenabeeles with Rolls Royce, Jester, Carrie, Pearce and Jade Leanne all in the pedigree. Hatched mid April last year ‘Wade’ only had 2 young bird races whilst his sister won as a Young Bird; 1 st CLUB 18 th Dorset Fed, also from Wadebridge. Given 6 training tosses up to 35 miles and a first race last Saturday flying the 63 miles in 66 minutes this was only his 4 th ever race. Exercise of 40 minutes each session morning and evening and a diet containing Golden Boost, Harkers Hormoform and Versele Laga feeds of Depurative, Gerry Plus and Champion Plus served to put him in tip top condition for the fly into a head wind. Taking 3 rd OPEN WAS JOHN’S POOLED PIGEON AND ONE OF THE LOFTS SPRINT STARS ALREADY NAMED “Nyland Linford”. In 2019 he won the Dorset Fed yearling of the year trophy with several good performances including 1 st CLUB AND 1 st Federation Carentan 584 birds. Last Saturday he was again first Club from Newton Abbot and is of Vandenabeele cross Hardy Kruger bloodlines. John would like to thank the secretary for all her efforts in getting the race on and all at Treetops for their sterling work in marking and getting the birds off to the race.
