King Charles III Coronation Bordeaux Open Race 1 st OPEN 1 st SECTION G Tommy Sparks & Pauline Dallas of Gravesend For our final race of the Old Bird Season we made our way down to a very warm Bordeaux. We decided to organise an Open race to co-inside with our National Bordeaux to help those fanciers that don’t have a longer distance race in the own Federation/ Club calendar to be able to have a go and also to celebrate our King’s Coronation Year. Within the BBC we had 98 members sending 647 pigeons and an extra 9 non BBC entering the Open race with 49 birds. Also joining us were the CSCFC with 141 birds and the WOESRC with 18, making the total Convoy 855 birds. The forecast leading up to liberation day was always looking dubious, so after a one day holdover we managed to cut the strings and send the birds homeward bound at 6.30am on the Sunday. The marking stations have been absolutely brilliant through out the old bird season and even though they have had new challenges with the Customs paperwork and vets, everything has been spot on, so many thanks to all of you at Frome, Steventon, Higham and Southampton. We are very lucky with everyone who helps and assists in all different ways, it is very much appreciated. We are also so grateful to Jill and Alan Webber and their team and Kevin Foster and his team for agreeing to run marking stations at Steventon and Higham, it has turned out well. Our last race of the season will be from Guernsey with the Young Birds and Old Bird/ Any Age on Saturday 26 th August. Congratulations to our National and Open Race Winners Tommy Sparks & Pauline Dallas of Gravesend 1 st OPEN 1 st SECTION G. THE PIGEON IS A THREE YEAR OLD BLUE COCK WHICH HAS THE BREEDING OF FRANS ZWOLS. He has been very consistent having many winning positions in our club including 1 st from 95 miles and 1 st from 180 miles and he was also in the result from St Philbert previously. We were fortunate to get five home on the day which all arrived in immaculate condition so well done to the convoyer. Also well done to everyone timing pigeons on a difficult day. Tommy Sparks & Pauline Dallas 2 nd OPEN 2 nd SECTION G DEREK REID OF WEYBRIDGE. GB20N09271 THIS YEAR FLEW BICC GUERNSEY & ALENCON. THEN Messac with the BBC homing very late on the day. His Sire was a 2017 pigeon, a direct son of my Palamos winner 2005 (16 years old when paired to a grand daughter of Invincible Spirit). Congratulations to the winners and many thanks to all the workers at Southampton marking station. Derek Reid Paul Basham’s hen 1 st SECTION A 3 rd OPEN PAUL BASHAM OF SOUTHAMPTON. MY WINNING HEN IS NOW NAMED MISS DCT. SIRE (DANIEL Aerens) x Dam (Chris Hebberecht) both bred for me by David Coward Talbot. Miss DCT is a 2 year old hen and been one of our most consistent racers. She had one pre-season training toss at 18 miles and then 2 races on the north with the Solent Fed (Upper Heyford, Upper Heyford). She was then turned south with the BICC into Guernsey, Alencon, St Philbert and then rested before being sent to Pau International where only 2 day birds were clocked. Proud to say that we had one of them! Miss DCT was our 2 nd bird arriving just after midday on the second day scoring 21 st CS, 53 rd OPEN. SHE WAS THEN RESTED FOR THREE WEEKS BEFORE BEING ENTERED FOR BORDEAUX, SITTING approximately 7 days. Our birds start the season on roundabout and are later paired with the International races in mind. Miss DCT was not in the right nest condition for the St Vincent International which was held on the same weekend as Bordeaux but basketed earlier in the week on the Monday, so she joined the Bordeaux team and it seemed to suit her! Thanks to Martin and Clare Norman for all their efforts along with the rest of the team! 2 nd SECTION A 4 th & 9 th / 10 th OPEN (OPEN RACE) JIMMY WEARN & ERIK NEILSON (WEARN BROS 1 & NEILSON) OF Ramsdean. Firstly, we would like to say well done to Paul Basham on a dream weekend. 1 st CSCFC Bordeaux and 1 st BICC St Vincent, brilliant! Our first bird is a Vandenabelle bred for us by our good friends John and Dave Hawkins. He has won lots of prizes at CLUB, FED AND NATIONAL LEVEL. HIS LAST RACE BEING BBC MESSAC WHERE HE WAS 24 th OPEN 5 th SECTION. Our second bird is called Giftee and is a Darren and Josh May pigeon which they gifted us. Erik Neilson & Kevin Zerafa David Coward-Talbot 1 st SECTION J 5 th OPEN DAVID COWARD-TALBOT OF CHELMSFORD. GB20E09727 BLUE COCK. SIRE WAS BRED BY STEVE Foster from his Sagan lines. Dam was my Hassendonck x Hen. This pair have bred me many good pigeons over the last few years. the day before this race one of his brother’s 80177 won the Thames North and Eastern Counties from Littlehampton for me . 09727 has been a great race cock for me in fact, as a young bird he was 4 th SECTION, 4 th OPEN BICC Young Bird race from Coutances on the 12/09/2020 He has won club races for me and alawys been a consistant pigeon. H was prepared especially for this race over last few weeks. 6 th OPEN NEIL JONES OF SANDWICH. FIRSTLY CONGRATULATIONS TO TOMMY AND PAULINE, A WELL DESERVED WIN. Only the second race this season for my two year old cock. His first race earlier this season, he took a week to come home and turned up minus his tail! His dam is my Bordeaux winner, who herself is half Mark Bulled’s old family. His sire is also from the same old tested Bulled family. Twelve out of seventeen home by the end of the second day, all looking good, suggests the birds were well cared for by the BBC team. Neil Jones’ Cock bird 7 th Open Mick and Lyn Chaplin of Woking. I congratulate the winner of this hard race and am pleased that we had 4 of our 6 entries on the day. The pigeon is a 2 year old blue cock sent sitting 10 days, he had been raced widowhood all year then after the BBC Messac race was allowed to pair up. This was his 5 th time across the channel this year and he has been very consistent always in the first 3 of our entries. Mick & Lyn Chaplin 8 th Open is one of our Open race competitors Guy Mullen & Son Matt of Horley. Thank you for taking part with us. '54' chequer cock. The cock that was 8 th OPEN IN THE BORDEAUX RACE HAS ONLY HAD 4 RACES BEFORE BORDEAUX. HE WAS sent twice to Purbeck in the South Coast Fed, NFC Fougeres and NFC Messac. Then 3 weeks off before this Bordeaux. His sire is from Michael Symonds, he is mainly Jim Biss blood, his dam is from Doug Gatland of Hookwood which we bought in a breeder buyer auction. This cock was raced on widowhood early in the season and then paired up and sent to Bordeaux on a small baby. The feed is a Versele Laga, Vanrobaeys and Beyers mix. We would like to congratulate the winner on a good performance. Guy & Matt Mullen 2 nd SECTION J 8 th / 9 th OPEN (OPEN RACE) MARK BULLED OF HARLOW. WELL DONE TO THE WINNERS SPARKS AND DALLAS AND ALL those that timed in a tougher than looked Bordeaux race. As I left for work at 6am Monday I have 3/5. A special well done to Paul Basham what a fantastic day’s racing he had and a thank you to Kevin Foster and team for running the very efficient Higham Station. I timed a 2 year old hen sent sitting 7 day eggs, turned round from the north where she flew Thurso as a yearling. She was bred by my good friend Ray Roberts of Surrey from my Legacy x Bump blood (1 st NFC Tarbes 2 nd BBC Bordeaux) when paired to a Nigel Laycock hen (from a Northern Classic Winner) This pair of Rays have previously bred 1 st Thames Futurity and top 5 National positions. Mark Bulled 10 th / 11 th OPEN (OPEN RACE) KEN & SUE FRANCIS OF SOUTHAMPTON. FROM BOTH OF US, VERY WELL DONE TO PAUL BASHAM; good flying yet again! Our first pigeon, a blue chequer cock, flew North Road last year as a baby and then as a yearling went with the Southampton & District North Road Fed as far as Rugby at approx 196 miles. We turned him and his loft mates South to go to Fougeres with the CSCFC after which he was rested ready for Bordeaux. He is a Billy Lynch Cassaert, and a bit bigger than our average Cassaert; but perhaps in this case size does matter! Ken Francis 1 st SECTION B 11 th / 12 th OPEN (OPEN RACE) KENNY LAND OF BOURNEMOUTH. I'D LIKE TO SAY "WELL DONE" TO THE WINNER and all the Section winners. Also "Thank You" to Clare Norman and her team on what seemed to be a very testing race in such a difficult wind. My birds came back in excellent condition. I had 5 from 9 birds on the day. My winning hen is raced on roundabout and is a Raw Sablons bred down from some gift birds from my very good friend Terry Wareham. She has had two or three North Road races and her only Channel race this year was from Guernsey with the BBC and the CSCFC. Ken Land 2 nd SECTION B 13 th / 14 th OPEN (OPEN RACE) JOHN CLAPCOTT OF POOLE. FIRSTLY I WOULD LIKE TO SAY WELL DONE TO ALL THE winners, The Dam of my first 3 birds was my Coutances Classic winner all being Busschaerts from Ray Dibben of Poole. I race 16 widowhood cocks and 4 hens and I still have 11 of the 16 left. John Clapcott Jill Webber 1 st Section D Alan & Jill Webber of Abingdon. Our Bordeaux bird is a 5 year old red grizzle cock flown on the chaos system. This is the first season we have been able to race him overseas due to a combination of reasons. This is his second overseas race having previously flown Nort sur Erdre with the NFC homing late on the day. He's a real mongrel with many different strains in his pedigree, hopefully he will still race next season. His son, who is the spitting image, will be racing from Sigogne, a similar result would be fantastic. 2 nd Section D Dennis Baker of Maidenhead. My first arrival was a 2 year old hen a Roger Lowe/ Sablon cross. Dennis Baker 1 st Section C Chris & Jane Howse of Devizes. Firstly, we would like to congratulate all the winners on what proved to be a tough race! Our first bird is a two year old cock flown on the chaos system, having his seventh channel race of the season. Previously on his last race with the classic from Fougeres he was our second bird 4 th SECTION. HE WAS ALSO 3 rd SECTION NFC’s guernsey last year! His sire is a son of our good pair, the Ponderosa pair and had also scored twice from Bordeaux! His dam is a sister to two section winners from Bergerac, so he certainly has the breeding. We are pleased with our returns with 5 of our 8 entries on the day and 2 more the next morning. Chris Howse 2 nd Section C Martin Williams of Hereford. Firstly congratulations to Sparks and Dallas on their win as well as my SECTION WINNER CHRIS HOWSE. Being in an unfavourable spot in the West I was delighted to have a bird 2nd Section. It was a 2 year old Jellema cock off my Tarbes winner, NFC 2022. I now know she is also a breeder for these tough races! He was sent having been sitting for 5 days. He has been consistent but never up at the front. It was also nice to see my 2nd bird arrive at 21:13, another Jellema cock, 14 3/4 hours on the wing for 502 miles. Martin Williams For the first time in over 3 years our Guernsey members were able to participate with us after being restricted due to Covid and Bird Flu. 1 st Section H Garry Mourant of Vale, Guernsey. The winner of section H was Garry Mourant who was absolutely over the moon with his 2 year old blue hens performance. She won the section by over an hour and due to circumstances out of our control has only been lightly trained this year. Garry would like to give a big thanks to Grace Hodgkinson , the Guernsey vet, who has made it possible to send the birds and also to Martin and Clare Norman who have helped the Island compete. On to the breeding of the hen she is a daughter of Fletch g/sire of 9 th UNC Ypres approximately 9,000 birds. He is a direct son of Porridge an Irish SR fed winner. The dam of the section winner is a direct daughter of the golden Gilbert pair. The dam is g/dam of 2 nd BBC National YB winner (dropped with winner) and is sister to the sire of that winner. The section winner is grand daughter of Timmy who is full brother to Mark Gilbert’s St Vincent winner and half brother to his Pau winner. Timmy is g/sire 1 st National Barcelona 15 th Nat Perpignan 15 th Nat Pau 24 th National Alencon g/gsire 2 nd Nat BBC YB and 22 nd International Carcassonne 11,209 birds. The section winner was bred by Garry’s mate Roger Phillips. Garry Mourant 1 st & 2 nd Section E is Em Hope & (Mal) of Telford. As you know, my birds are registered to my daughter Em' but I am still the boss. My bird, now called Girondeuse is an inbred granddaughter of Piaf, the previous Bordeaux winner. My second bird is a son of Piaf. Both were flying to a seven day youngster. Can I say well done to all those that timed in on what turned out to be a difficult race. Mal Hope 2 nd & 3 rd Section H Paul Mauger of Vale, Guernsey. First thing I would like to do is thank our local vet Grace, Keith Young and yourself Clare for all the hard work you’ve done to get us to this race it has been much appreciated. My first bird was bred down from a pair of birds I purchased from the RPRA One Loft auctions, I don’t have any breed details but the father was 6 th Ace Pigeon 2019 and the mother was 13 th Ace Pigeon 2018. He was lightly trained before this race and was sent on the roundabout system. My second bird was bred down from my syndicate loft pigeons carrying the “Top Star” & “Dirkjes Harry” lines he was also lightly trained on the build up to this race and also sent on the roundabout system. 3 rd Section E Team Aurel of Telford. I thought long and hard whether to send to this race, as the wind was unfavourable to the west of the country and strong south westerly wind in the Channel. But it was King Charles III Coronation Race from Bordeaux and no way I was going to miss this race full of heritage and tradition. Against all odds, here she is our "Laureaat Nela" GB-2020-V-59323 our very stubborn hen, prov 3 rd SECTION E, 3 rd Northern Zone, 102 Open. She was flown on a roundabout system as she never wanted to pair up or go down on eggs. She was only flown inland this year with one Guernsey race with MCC. Sire: "Double Laureaat 224" of Mark Gilbert: From a NL-2015-1687631 (A son of New Laureaat 1 st International Barcelona when paired to Olympic Romee of Jelle Jellema ) x NL-2013-1219552 Daughter New Laureaat Dam: "Laureaat Vasilica 241": From GB-2017-E-32597 Mark Gilbert "Witbuk Laureaat" Half Brother to Southfield Hugo 1 st Nat Perpignan 2017, 1 st Nat Barcelona 2018; Grandson of New Laureaat and New Witbuk 1 st Nat Barcelona) when paired to RO-2015-310577 "Vasile Copy 577" (Full sister to Champion Vasile 1st National Ace Marathon, also Mother of "Nela" 1 st Sec E BBC Bordeaux.
