Paul & Lynda Todd get a clear winner out of Exeter (2).
Saturday July 4th saw the curtain come down on the 2026 Old Bird Federation programme, with a second visit to the Devon city of Exeter. 50 Members from 7 clubs entered 795 birds which were liberated by Alys at 09-50 in a fresh West North West wind.
With the fresh westerly wind there was no surprise to see the lofts situated on the east side of the federation dominating the result.
Congratulations to Paul & Lynda Todd of the Chaddesden Jubilee club in Derby, they timed in a yearling mealy cock bred by Dave Poole of Poolsbrook, to take 1st fed on 1667, a good 90 seconds clear of the field.

Ken & Hilda Salt of Holbrook were 2nd and 10th fed on 1654; 1641 with a 3yo cheq Lambrecht hen and a 2yo cheq Lambrecht hen.

Alan & Liz Houldsworth of Chaddesden Jubilee have had a good old bird season, they took 3rd fed on 1652.7 with a yearling blue hen bred by Kev Matthews, and she also won out of Frome this year. Her sire is a grandson of the Jos Cools “Super Cools Lady”; her dam is a Freddie Vandenaheede x Jos Cools. Alan & Liz topped the fed in the last visit to Exeter in May.

4th fed on 1652.1 was Charlie Murfin with his winner at Swadlincote Town. Charlie timed in a yearling blue Sylvain Verhestraeten x Camphius Jansenne cock.

Back into Derby now, and Mark Yule of Chaddesden Jubilee took 5th fed on 1650 with a yearling Pied Ceuleman cock from Mick Stone, this cock has been broken out and raced by Mark.
Up at Holbrook and Glyn & Glenda Stone is another loft that’s had a good season, and they timed in a yearling Pencil cock from P & D Stud on 1647.9 to take 6th fed.

Debbie Fearn has had a good old bird season, and she caps it off taking 7th & 9th fed on 1647.7; 1643. The first over the pad was the Winshill winner; a 3yo red cock, no stranger to the prize lists; his sire is a son of “Tiger”; and again his dam is the Stefaan Lambrecht hen. He was followed by a Swadlincote Town bird; a yearling red cock, his sire a Vandenabeele off Davis, Wright & Sons, purchased at the club breeder buyer, he’s a multiple first prize winner, and his dam is a granddaughter of “Hideaway”
Davis, Wright & Sons of Swadlincote Town were 8th fed on 1647.5 with a 3yo dark cheq cock, a previous winner of 1st fed. His sire, another fed topper is a son of “Nugget”, who was a son of the Gordon Bros “Super 147”.” Super 147” was bred out of a granddaughter of Mr & Mrs Lycett’s top Vandenabeele “Pale Rider” which the Gordon Bros purchased from their entire clearance sale. His dam is line bred to Debbie Fearn’s “Hideaway” and the Honeysuckle Jansenne.

Starting at Stretton, 6 sent 104 and there was a photo finish as young Jack Bourke ends the old bird season where he started it, in top spot. His winner on 1596.6 was “Miss Chiesa” a 2yo blue hen bred by Mark Evans of Denbighshire. Her sire is a Central lofts Hereman Cuester out the “Jackpot”; “Di Caprio” and “Junior “ lines; her dam is same dam of “Treble 2” Phil Bourke’s blue wf cock, a winner of 3 x 1st in 2026.
Alan Brassington was 2nd club on1596.2 with the yearling blue cock which won out of Exeter (1) earlier this season. His sire is “Ernie” the good Ernie Rigby de Meyer x Soontjen cock a winner of 9 x 1st; his dam a Johan den Hartog from Mick Nairn off Liverpool .
Phil Bourke was 3rd and 4th on 1595; 1592; first over the pad a 2yo blue cock from A & L Painter out of the Colin Lloyd Cattrysse, “Taffy” and “King Arthur” blood lines. He was followed by “Treble 2” the yearling blue wf Ron Hillcoat x Central Lofts cock bred by Mark Evans of Denbighshire, a winner of 3 x 1st in 2026.
Into Derby, at Chaddesden Jubilee, 12 sent 153 and the top three all appear in the fed report above, Mick Stone took 4th spot on 1633 with a yearling dark cheq hen.
At Winshill, 3 sent 33 and Debbie Fearn completes a clean sweep of victories with her old birds at Winshill, she was 1st and 2nd club on 1647; 1618; details of the winner appears in the fed report above. Runner up was the yearling blue cock which won out of Frome this season, his sire a grandson of “Hideaway” X Honeysuckle Jansenne x “Broken Wing”; his dam off a daughter of “Sweetie” X a with a son of A & L Painter’s “Van Persie”. .
Jim Parker was 3rd and 4th on 1589; 1569 with his Hereman cocks.
At Swadlincote Town, 13 sent 224 and the top three birds all appear in the fed report above. Taking 4th club on 1633 were Mr & Mrs Lee Clamp & Sons with their excellent 3yo Blue M & D Evans Vandenabeele hen that won out of Nort Sur Edre this season and also finished 2nd out of Insigny sur Mer.
Up at Holbrook, 7 sent 131 and the top three all appear in the fed report above; John Dowd was 4th club on 1639 with a yearling black hen out of a son of Dave Waddington’s “The Bat” when paired to one off Bob Fenech.
Finally, at Etwall, 6 sent 80 and Secretary Alan Peach took the top four to cap a fine old bird season. The winner on 1604 was off Sam Phillips stock. Runner up on 1603 was a Jansenne; followed by one bred off an Alan Brassington breeder buyer purchase on 1597. 4th club on 1588 was another Jansenne.
The final Guernsey race for our old birds is planned to take place on Saturday July 18th, again convoyed by the Heart of England Federation, good luck to everyone who competes.
Let’s all hope our young birds are blessed with the same weather we’ve had for our old birds, it has been an excellent season with great returns.
