Homer reports on the NIPA Area Liberations
Area Liberations start the NIPA young bird season -
Just 6,000 birds were sent by the NIPA to compete in various Area Liberations from Kilbeggan and Navan for the start of the young bird season in mid-July. Owen Markey from Ballyholland in Newry topped the NIPA from Kilbeggan recording velocity 1421 just ahead of former Kings Cup winners Mark Maguire & Son from Newry & District.

NIPA 1st Kilbeggan YB 18/07/26 – Mid Antrim Combine
The opening young bird race of the season was held on Saturday 18th July. The birds were liberated in Kilbeggan, Co. Westmeath at 9.15am in north westerly winds and a pretty tough race followed. Kells & District fanciers Sammy Scott and his son Sam timed the best bird in the Mid Antrim Combine on 1214 at 11.57am flying 112 miles to their lofts off the Tildarg Road. The partnership only joined the club and Combine this season and a great start in their first ever young bird race.

Next best Keith & Callum Kernohan took the top three positions in the Ballymena & District club and finished 2nd, 3rd & 4th Combine, 5th, 6th & 7th Section. The first bird timed on 1198 was a red cock from Robin Service's 'Wee Rab' 1st Combine & 3rd Section when paired to a Soontjen hen from Derek Parr. The second bird is off an inbred Best Kittel x Kittel cock and the dam Leo Herman from Derek Parr. The lads third bird timed is off a Gerald Delaney cock that bred 2nd Combine & 2nd Section Dunmanway YB National last season and dam from Dave Stone from his Verstappen lines.

Marc Neilly had the best two birds in Broughshane both on 1196 and 5th & 6th Combine. His winner is Soontjen x Gerald Delaney from Robin Service and dam was purchased from Gerald Delaney.

Brooklyn Hanson from Broughshane took 3rd club on 1192 and won his best Combine and Section positions to date 7th Combine & 11th Section.
Denis Craig was best in Cullybackey on 1179 and 9th Combine. He timed an Alex Docx x Van Den brande youngster in a kit from Paddy & William McManus of Ahoghill. This was Denis's first win in Cullybackey since joining.

William & Jean McLean had the top two in Rasharkin both birds doing 1170.their winner was bred off Lambrecht and Alex Docx birds from Paddy & William McManus of Ahoghill. John Millar was best in Randalstown on 1157 and Jimmy Smyth had the Ahoghill winner on 1150.

Second race flown on a Friday, Newry lofts best again -
For the second week of Area Liberations the weekend weather was not suitable and all pigeon organisations brought the weekend race forward to Friday with birds race marked on Thursday. The NIPA birdage was just over 8,000 birds and 1st Open was won by the recent OB Nat winner William Chambers of Newry & District. The previous weeks 1st Open winner Owen Markey from Ballyholland was next best.

Mid Antrim Combine - NIPA 2nd Kilbeggan YB 24/07/26
The second young bird race of the season was held on Friday 24th July. The birds were liberated in Kilbeggan, Co. Westmeath at 10.50am in light west north westerly winds. Danny Dixon of Dunloy had the best two birds in the Mid Antrim Combine this week timing at 14.04pm flying 120 miles. Danny's first bird to trap was a blue hen bred by Andy & Mavis Boyle and is down from their white tailed family of birds. Danny's second bird timed a blue Lambrecht hen is a granddaughter of 'Champion Heartbreaker'

Third in the Combine Bertie Blair of Ballymena & District had the best bird in the Town on 1564. Sire is a Van Den Bulck gift cock from clubmate Johnston Eagleson and the Bulck dam was purchased from Jeff Greenaway.

Johnny Barkley was best in Kells on 1549 and 5th Combine. Sire was bred from a Van Den Bulck cock from the late Lexie Mullan and the dam a Gerald Delaney hen.

Jimmy Smyth were best in Ahoghill on 1533, Alan Darragh won Cullybackey on 1529 and Marc Neilly took the top three in Broughshane on 1513. Marc's winner won 2nd club & 7th Combine last weekend beaten in the club by 3 seconds with a loftmate. Sire was given to Marc by the late Johnny Simpson and dam was purchased from clubmate Alastair Purvis. Freddie Barkley won Rasharkin on 1513 and Ian Stewart best in Randalstown on 1445.
