Central Southern Classic Flying Club British Barcelona Club MESSAC RACE CSCFC BBC Barrie Smith of Winchester John Chipperfield of Herne Bay 1 st OPEN 1 st SE Section 1 st OPEN 1 st SECTION G Barrie Smith John Chipperfield Another great turnout by both clubs for this combined race to Messac. The 2,669 birds were sent by the BBC, CSCFC, WOESRC and the Premier 100 Club. The Classic winner was my very own club mate Barrie Smith of Winchester. Many Classic members would remember Barrie when we used to mark at Winchester a few years ago. Barrie is now 87 years of age and still keen as ever, which shows you are never too old to have a go at winning the Open. Our BBC winner is John Chipperfield of Herne Bay who usually can be seen making his mark with the longer distance races, so it’s great to see John pull this one out of the bag. Many congratulations to Barrie and John. It was another funny day of racing, with very atmospheric conditions, so we must mention Aurel Voiculescu and Nigel Shaw both putting in credible performances in Section E alongside Richard Chambers and Sebastian Szul as well. Thank you to all the marking stations and everyone who helps and assists, it was another very busy one, so we thank you all for the effort put in. A final mention to Pat and Steve for taking care of our birds so well. (Race & Weather Advisors – ) The birds were liberated at 9.15am with no wind on site but a NW turning SW on route. BBC – 1 st OPEN 1 st SECTION G JOHN CHIPPERFIELD OF HERNE BAY. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO PHONED AND congratulated me. My winning bird was a 3 year old blue Jos Cools bred by Jutla Brothers of London. She was sent to the race on a baby 2 days old, she is a granddaughter to Remco. Her full sister had already been 1 st and 2 nd Fed. The winning pigeon was paired to one of my roundabout hens. They were sitting for 4 weeks on the Wednesday the day before basking, I slipped her a 2 day old chick, and it seemed to have worked. Thank you to Kevin Foster for helping me out with my birds. CSCFC - 1 st OPEN 1 st SE Section/ BBC – 5 th OPEN 1 st SECTION A BARRIE SMITH OF WINCHESTER. I WAS BORN IN Lincolnshire and became interested in pigeons when I was 6 years old. I used to be a runner for my Uncle because I could run fast. I used to play football until I got married, then another one of my brother in laws started me off in pigeons when we lived at Bracknell. I used to race in the Ascot Club then I moved to Winchester with my job. I’ve been trying to win a Classic for a long time. At last, I’ve done it at 87 years old. My pigeon is a Vandenabeele I bought from Mel King as a baby. He has won 4 club races and also was 6 th OPEN 1 st SE Section with the Classic from Fougeres 4 weeks ago only beaten to the top spot by 1 yard by Roger Lowe who took the first 5. And now he has won the big one. Barrie & Ian Smith BBC – 2 nd OPEN 2 nd SECTION G NEIL JONES OF SANDWICH. NO STORIES TO TELL YOU ABOUT MY FIRST BIRD FROM Messac, GB 23 D 69802 Mealy Pied Hen. Her third time across the channel this season, flown on the natural system, sitting nice and tight on approximately twelve day eggs. She was straight back up into her nest box as soon as she went through the traps, get a hen in that maternal frame of mind, and they’re unbeatable. Parents of her were bred by Fagg and Nicholas, and very kindly given to me in a kit of twelve, ( I hope you were sitting down when you read that bit). Congratulations to Johnny Chipperfield, well deserved, one of the great characters of the sport. Neil Jones’ Hen Paul Basham Paul Basham’s chequer cock CSCFC – 2 nd & 4 th OPEN 2 nd & 3 rd SE Section/ BBC - 7 th & 11 th OPEN 2 nd & 3 rd SECTION A PAUL BASHAM OF SOUTHAMPTON. Big congrats to club mate Barrie Smith on pipping me to the post!! Very pleased for him! I sent a team of 35 (mainly yearlings) and to date 30 of our entry are home. We do our best to prepare our team with the right work and motivation and our first bird defied all odds being the only member of the team to have its first ever outing across the channel, unpaired and simply returning to his box! Makes you think doesn’t it! Our second bird to score 4 th OPEN CSCFC IS A 1/2 BROTHER TO ‘THE LIONESS’ WHO AMONGST OTHER PRIZES SCORED 1 st OPEN BICC PERPIGNAN. THE DAM IS BRED BY GEOFF AND CATHERINE COOPER FROM A SON OF FARMER GEORGE X Wollongong when paired to a daughter of Forrest Junior (1 st International Pau for SG Freialdenhofen & Sons). BBC – 3 rd OPEN 3 rd SECTION G JAIMIE CLARKE & DTR OF FAVERSHAM. I WOULD LIKE TO SAY CONGRATULATIONS TO JOHNNY Chipperfield and Neil Jones who are both mates of mine, until they beat me this weekend! This blue hen is a double grand daughter of Forest Gump and raced natural for the first time this year she has been sent everywhere because she has always been known as the worst pigeon in the shed, but she’s proven herself this time. Fingers crossed she can go to Pau with the NFC. CSCFC – 3 rd OPEN 1 st NE Section/ BBC - 8 th OPEN 3 rd SECTION D G & M BICKNELL OF READING. OUR BIRD WAS A two year old mealy hen sent feeding a nine day old baby, two weeks ago she was fifty fourth open NFC Nort- sur-Erdre. Jaimie Clarke’s hen Gary Bicknell Steve & Baz Baron BBC – 4 th OPEN 1 st SECTION D BARON BROS (STEVE & BAZ) OF REDBOURN. BLUE CHEQUER HEN, COOREMAN BRED BY Bob Fenech. Raced on roundabout. The birds are flying very well this year, 34 times in the top 4 of club in 11 races 5 x 1 st , 5 x 2 nd never out of first 3 winning Fed twice. CSCFC – 5 th OPEN RICHIE THOMAS OF PORTSMOUTH. WELL DONE BARRIE AND PAUL. THE PIGEON I TIMED IN WAS A yearling hen flown on widowhood. I lost her cock last week from Okehampton, so I put a spare cock in her box. Straight away she showed off to him. I bought her from Alfie Hawthorne, she was 1 of 6 and had every race form Classic, BICC and Premier 100 club. On that day from Messac she won the Premier 100 club which is a very hard club to win having over 50 members. All the best everyone Richie Thomas the Dark Destroyer. Richie Thomas BBC – 6 th OPEN 2 nd SECTION D JOHN HAYNES OF FIFIELD. FIRSTLY, CONGRATULATIONS TO JOHN CHIPPERFIELD AND ALL THE other prize winners. My pigeon is a blue hen who has had a few positions in national racing, this being her best. This pigeon is bred from GB20N01094, who is a son of Mufasa and Venus of Ace Lofts. Dam is a Leo Herman bred by Mark Gilbert who has bred a few decent pigeons to win minor positions. CSCFC – 6 th OPEN 2 nd NE Section Rob Quinn of Aldershot. Firstly, congratulations to Barrie Smith on winning and thanks to all the workers at the marking station. I’m very pleased with the result as I haven’t been able to race as much as I would like this year. I had 14/17 on the night and one early next morning all in a great condition. My bird is bred from G T Snelling (heylen) cross R Hammond (pocket rocket) family that I purchased at his bereavement sale. So far, this pair have produced some useful channel birds for me and hopefully carry on doing so. John Haynes hen Rob Quinn CSCFC – 8 th OPEN KENNY & ARMSTRONG OF WANTAGE. OUR 4 th SECTION 8 th OPEN BIRD IS A BLUE PIED HEN. SHE IS raced on widowhood. Our Hen has previously been 2 nd SECTION VIRE CSCFC. HER BREEDING IS CHAMPION DINO lines X Gino Clicque. BBC – 9 th OPEN BILL WATKINS OF ENFIELD. MY 2 YEAR OLD BLUE COCK HAS BEEN A CONSISTENT RACER, TAKING SEVERAL club positions this year. This was his first time across the channel, he is my old Copper Kettle family cross with J & R Turnell of Cheshunt Jealousy, Queen lines. Came home in great condition, thanks to all who looked after the birds I have 5 from 8 at the moment. CSCFC – 9 th OPEN 1 st NW Section Dave Fare of Bristol Congratulations to CSCFC winner Barrie Smith and all the section winners. On Saturday, my dad Thomas, father in law Brian Harvey and I were sat in the garden waiting the return of the birds on a very hot day, my dad & I was sat in the shade whilst Brian was sat topping up his suntan from having returned from Tunisia the day before. Having seen street birds diving in on many occasions we thought the birds were ours returning, until Brian said 'here's one's direct online, around loft to face south west wind and drop onto board, wings down, she had put in a good effort and it showed. The bird is self bred Vandenabeele from Rodney Horner and Kerry Mellonby’s stock, her sire was a bird that as a young bird ended up in St Alban's from a 20 mile toss, fed by the football club staff, it made its way back 100 miles plus, to become a pest in loft with staying out going missing upsetting pairings, and eventually settling. The bird did well to perform in a very blowy south west wind, with us being in the west, she had to work hard to get here. That was her 5th channel race of the year. Thank you to everyone who congratulated us and many hanks to my wife Sam for all help with basketing, vaccinating, stamping and putting on numbered rings etc, The bird is self bred vandenabeele from Rodney Horner and Kerry Mellonby,s stock, her sire was a bird that as a young bird ended up in St Alban's from a 20 mile toss, fed by the football club staff, it made its way back 100 miles plus, to become a pest in loft with staying out going missing upsetting pairings, and eventually settling. Good luck to all for the rest of the season, long distance and young bird racing. Eamonn Kenny Bill Watkins Dave Fare BBC – 10 th OPEN NEIL EMBERSON OF CHATHAM. THIS IS MY YEARLING BLUE HEN SAPPHIRE, SHE HAS PREVIOUSLY WON as a baby scoring 1 st CLUB 14 th Kent Premier Federation Weymouth and 1 st CLUB A FEW WEEKS AGO. SHE WAS SENT to St Philbert as her first ever channel race being second bird home which set her up for Messac. She was my fancied bird for this race and is a Van den Bulck x Lambrechts lines . CSCFC – 10 th OPEN 1 st SW Section Dave & John Staddon of Ditcheat. Once again, we are thrilled to win the 1 st and 2 nd SW Section from Messac CSCFC. This is our 3 rd SECTION WIN IN THE CLASSIC OF 2025 (VIRE, PAU & MESSAC) AND our 4 th SECTION WIN BETWEEN THE CLASSIC, BBC, NFC AND BICC, AS WELL AS WINNING 1 st OPEN BBC FOUGERES. HOPEFULLY, we are not done yet for 2025. We timed two yearling cocks 39 seconds apart which are bred from our marathon families. The section winner is from Mad Max II a direct Frank Zwiers of Holland pigeon, from his International Ace Pigeon Mad Max, who won 5 th Pau 4255b, 11 th Narbonne 6725b & 17 th Agen 3940b when he was paired to Aurora 5 th St Vincent 1518b 6 th Agen 4776b and 11 th St Vincent 11,572b. The dam of the section winner is Blue Izzy, a direct daughter of Izzy whom we bought in the Kevin Zerafa clearance sale. Izzy is one of the best Pau/Tarbes hens in recent memory, winning 1 st OPEN CSCFC PAU, 2 nd OPEN CSCFC TARBES, 4 th OPEN CSCFC PAU AND 1 st SECTION 18 th OPEN NFC Tarbes. Our second timer is one of Dad's favourite yearlings and is a red cock again bred in the purple for long distance racing. His sire is Mecurey Rising, bred for stock by ourselves. He is from Fahrenheit 1 st SECTION 2 nd Nat Rieux, Minervois 592 miles, 4 th SECTION 23 rd Nat Pau 549 miles and 14 th sec 64 th Nat Agen 529 miles. The dam is Miss Frankie again a direct from Frank Zwiers of Holland. She is from Frankenstein Sire of 1 st International Pau Pigeon and Belle who is a direct daughter of 1 st Nat St Vincent 13,472b, 12 th NPO St Vincent, 26 th NPO St Vincent and 12 th NPO St Vincent. This pair also bred the mother of the 1 st SW Section Winner from St Philbert for our great friends George and Peter Owers this year, so really promising signs for them. We are delighted that Frank's pigeons are beginning to show up in our performances. He has now left the sport, which is a big loss to pigeon racing in Europe. Our next races will be Bordeaux and Dax. As normal, our pigeons are raced on Chaos Widowhood for the whole season and our fed on Staddon's Chaos Mix from Bamfords. Once again, we thank the whole team at Bamfords for their wonderful support. Congratulations to Barrie Smith, Winner of the Classic and John Chipperfield, winner of the BBC, as well as all the section winners and of course, our marking station volunteers and the conveying team. We have 30/31 home at the time of writing. Neil Emberson’s hen John & Dave Staddon BBC – 1 st SECTION J JOHN BRADY OF BENFLEET. MY PROVISIONAL FIRST SECTION WINNER, A GRIZZLE COCK GB23N57919 IS the most consistent pigeon I have had for many years, having taken cards from 3 different national race points as a yearling and so far this year he has been prov 2 nd SECTION NFC AND NOW PROV 1 st SECTION BBC. HE IS ALWAYS first back to the loft no matter what distance, so I am really looking forward to racing him over the next few years. BBC – 2 nd SECTION J MARK BULLED OF HARLOW. I TIMED A YEARLING WIDOW COCK THE SAME WAY BRED AS MY SCISSOR sisters that have this year won locally 10x 1sts Clubs between them including 1 st Feds and 1 st UBI Combine. The sire was bred by Mark Adcock and the Dam by GWP Macaloney. John Brady Mark Bulled BBC -1 st & 3 rd SECTION E TEAM AUREL. GB21F-25248 “GEOFF CALLED” There he is our pigeon named “Geoff Called” section E winner BBC Messac 334miles, prov 16 th OPEN. Love the breeding of this pigeon, the entanglement of old and new bloodlines. His sire is an old English Southwell bloodline from Stewart Reed. On the Dam side is a result of breeding from my old bloodline of “Champion Vasile” himself, 1 st Marathon national ace pigeon when crossed with a daughter of Son New Laureeat (Mark Gilbert) x Daughter of Olympic Romee. It was a tough day of racing with south west wind and heat forecasted and to see pigeons arriving down south on Benzing live it gave us confidence that they have crossed the channel. Our barometer is the loft of Mr Consistent Dave Staddon, to see that he had 50% within 2 hours gave us hope 1 or 2 pigeons will turn our way. The Benzing app ping to let me know the first pigeon had arrived and I was so full of joy to see him arrive. Then Geoff Cooper rang ! What? The living legend Geoff Cooper is ringing to congratulate me? No way ! That conversation with the maestro stayed with me for the rest of the day. So, you probably worked it out by now that I named the pigeon “Geoff Called” because Geoff Called. The rest is history: the 12/15 pigeons came home 1 by one, with the certainty of the sunset over the distant land. What a great day to be alive! Congratulations my friend John Chipperfield for 1 st OPEN, IT COULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED TO A NICER PERSON. All the best everyone, Team Aurel. Team Aurel “Geoff Called” Nigel & Wendy Shaw’s hen BBC – 2 nd SECTION E NIGEL & WENDY SHAW OF CREWE. THE YEARLING HEN WE TIMED FROM MESSAC 363 MILES TO BE 2 nd sect prov 18 th OPEN WAS A DISTANCE HEN BRED BY OURSELVES. IT WAS HER 3 rd time over the Chanel this season. Congratulations to all the winners & everyone that clocked on a very testing day, Nigel & Wendy. BBC – 1 st SECTION C STEVE HUGHES OF SWINDON. VERY PLEASED TO BE PROVISIONALLY 1 st SECTION/ 20 th OPEN. HE HAS been in with the hens for the racing season where he has been very consistent racing to there until a couple weeks ago I put him back in his box, I took him out because he kept fighting when breeding. Sire of the pigeon was bred R & B Smith of Warrington he was one of the 6 I swapped with them as yb’s in 2023. The Dam is yet again from my “26” line being a daughter of her this time. This line has been superb for me and others over the years and is really proven, I haven’t many direct from her now so like gold dust. Congratulations to race winner and all the section winners on what was another testing day. BBC – 2 nd SECTION C MARTIN WILLIAMS OF HEREFORD. ON ANOTHER HOT DAY WITH STRONG WEST WINDS, IT MADE FOR A hard race. My money was still on my pooled bird out of a team of 32. He is a 2 year old roundabout cock out of my old line Huybrects x Leo Heremans, a gift from Sheldon Leonard. This bird is always up at the front and was 19 minutes in front of my next bird. He has won numerous firsts, racing in the West of England Combine. He is also sire to my best young bird last year who was a winner of 5 th SECTION, 75 th OPEN FALAISE NFC. MY returns were reasonable, having 27 out of 32. Steve Hughes Martin Williams BBC – 1 st SECTION C JIM FISHER OF WIMBORNE. MY SECTION WINNER GB23B14221 IS FROM MY FAMILY OF HERMAN Ceusters his half brother was 5 th OPEN FROM FOUGERES THIS YEAR. THEY HAVE BEEN SUCH A GOOD FAMILY OF BIRDS THAT are consistent even in the tough races these were supplied by Derek Spoors. I am the third generation of pigeon fanciers in my family and without my dad’s knowledge I would not be winning such good positions although he is no longer with us, race days always remind me such fond memories waiting for the birds. I entered 10 and got 8 home so far all returned in good condition after another tough day in the heat. Well done to John Chipperfield on winning and to the other section winners. Thank you to all those who make the BBC such a great club to be part of. Jim Fisher Geoff Cooper CSCFC – 2 nd NW Section Geoff & Catherine Cooper of Peasedown St John. We clocked a yearling cock whose Dam is a half sister to Farm Grafter, Grafter is a grandchild of Farmer George and Wollongong. His sire is a son of Orian (Jellema) when paired to a daughter of Sumerian Fighter and Saar (Batenburg). He was flown round-about, paired at the end of January. This season he had three inland races then into this race, bring his first ever channel race. We had 19/19 returns and they were all in very good condition. BBC – 2 nd SECTION B/ CSCFC – 3 rd SW Section Danny Lanahan & John Gerard of Poole. Our first two pigeons were direct children from our 2019 CSCFC winner Dark Flo, flown our chaos system. The mother’s a winner of 4 x 1 st SECTION TOP HEN. YOU HAVE IN THEIR BLOOD ZWARTE LOUDES 1 st National St Vincent 600 miles on the day 16,340 birds plus sire g/sire of 7 x 1 st National winners plus Flo g/son Figo 1 st National bourges 12000 +winner 12x 1 st world class breeder. Danny Lanahan, Jelle Jellema and John Gerard Willie Healy Paul Mauger BBC – 1 st SECTION H WILLIE HEALY OF JERSEY. MY 3 YEAR OLD BLUE HEN IS JONES & THOMAS FROM BIRKENHEAD ON THE sire side and a Polish hen on the damn side, she was sitting on ten day eggs. Well done to the winner and all the pigeons that made it home. Big thank you to Clare Norman and her husband Martin for looking after the channel Island pigeon fanciers and their birds. Keep well Clare. BBC – 2 nd SECTION H PAUL MAUGER OF GUERNSEY. FIRST THING I WOULD LIKE TO DO IS THANK YOURSELF CLARE, JOHN Gerard & Danny Lanahan for collecting our birds and taking them to the marking station. It’s all much appreciated by myself and the channel Island fanciers. The blue hen I clocked for 2 nd SECTION WAS BRED DOWN FROM MARK GILBERT’S SOUTHFIELD SUPREME LINES, SHE'S BEEN a consistent hen for me also winning the section from Nort Sur Edre last year. Convoyers Report Thursday 26 June Finished loading 2,650+ birds. Clare printed off all the paperwork for the French Customs and Vets. Birds all fed and watered. Drove onto the ship at Portsmouth at 10.30pm. Friday 27 June Left ship at 6.30am and drove straight to Vets. As usual 2 crates of birds were taken off the transporter and taken into a sealed room. Five birds from each crate are taken out and their ring numbers checked against the paperwork (all OK). Drove straight to Messac. Once on site we topped up the water and rested the birds for a while. Then we gave them a feed and all drinkers topped up with fresh water. It was turning out to be a very warm day - back doors left open until 9pm. Saturday 28 June Pat and I were both up at 5am. It was very overcast but still quite warm. At around 5.30am about 30+ hot air balloons came floating by. They were at a height we could call to them. When they tried to go a little higher the balloons disappeared into low cloud. This was a good indication for us not to lib early. Pat spoke with Clive and Mark (Race Advisors) and they all agreed to hold back on a lib until later when the sky was brighter. The balloons were well gone by 7am. At 8.30am Pat spoke with Race Advisors and a liberation was agreed between 9am and 9.15am. The sky was much brighter now and it was starting to get warmer. The liberation itself was excellent with the birds from both sides joining up straight away. But it soon became clear something was wrong. The batch broke up into 4 or 5 smaller batches and were very high. The batches were spread across the sky over a mile. Slowly the batches left the area, heading north, one by one. The final batch left 15-20 minutes after liberation. Another organisation was on site with us. They liberated 1hr and 15 minutes after us, again an excellent liberation, but these birds acted exactly the same as ours had. As with both liberations the sky was checked for BoP, nothing to be seen. As we drove back to Caen Port the skies were blue and the sun was out much of the way back. Steve and Pat BBC & CSCFC Young Bird/ Old Bird Races – Before making the final decision on where the BBC and CSCFC will go for their young bird/ old bird races on 16 th August (BBC) and 30 th August (CSCFC) we are still hoping that Guernsey may be a possibility. We were so looking forward to giving the young birds a channel race from Carentan but the liberation site was closed down, and we have not been successful finding another site close to Carentan or Coutances as we’d hoped. Both Clubs will keep you posted and let you know within the next couple of weeks where we will be racing from. AWARD WINNERS 2025 SO FAR!
