President: Nigel Rigiani Chairman: Mike Shepherd Patron: Mark Gilbert Messac National 1 st OPEN 1 st SECTION E Mr & Mrs Beckett & Sons from Dunston With “Christine’s Dream” With every section being supported including 3 great lads from Ireland sending 4 brave pigeons we had a tremendous turn out for Messac with 2,361 birds being sent by 295 members. Phil Smith, John Downing and Peter Kennedy went to a lot of trouble to arrange a courier to bring their birds over from Ireland. What dedication to the Club! A big thank you to all the helpers and volunteers at the marking stations, who were on the go from start to finish. (If anyone has left a small wicker basket at Salisbury Marking Station, please contact me). Martin would like to thank Clive Rogers who stayed to help load the 70 crates at Salisbury. Once you have marked all day those 70 crates seem to double in amount. Saturday dawned and after conferring with Steve Appleby Nigel released the birds at 7.45am in to a very light NE wind with variable wind on route. The birds cleared well and headed straight North. It was anybody’s guess where the winner would be but I am delighted to say this great achievement of 1 st OPEN 1 st SECTION E GOES TO CHRISTINE, PAUL AND COLIN BECKETT FROM DUNSTON, STAFFORDSHIRE flying as Mr & Mrs Beckett & Sons. This family started racing pigeons in 1988 with husband and wife Arthur and Christine and two of their three sons Paul and Colin. Christine has been involved since they began racing and went on to become Secretary of Penkridge RIPC for over twenty years and Arthur held the position of Chairman. Sadly, Arthur passed away in 2001 leaving Christine at the helm. There is no particular strain kept but good pigeons are paired back to good pigeons. They race a team of about 20 old birds and breed about 50 youngsters each season. Training takes place 3 times a week up to 30 miles with Malcolm Blackmore. Feeding is a racing mix from Sandy Acre Feeds with conditioner added to it and Gemthepax is included twice a week in the drinking water. “Christine’s Dream” as she is now known is a 2 year old chequer natural hen sent sitting 6 day eggs. She is a Busschaert x Wim Moens pigeon, the Busschaert bloodlines from Frank Hall and the Wim Moens bloodlines bought from a sale in the Black Country direct from Wim Moens. She was previously 15 th SECTION 90 th OPEN BBC CARENTAN. SHE HAD THREE INLAND RACES BEFORE CARENTAN AND then rested until this race. Christine & Paul Beckett. 2 nd OPEN 1 st SECTION C IS PAUL AND BRIAN HYATT FLYING AS P, B & W HYATT OF TEWKESBURY. AFTER very sadly losing their best friend, wife and mum Wendy on News Years Eve, Paul and Brian decided to cease Club racing and just concentrate on National races to try and win the big one in honour of Wendy and look how very close they came to doing just that. I am sure with Wendy watching over them and spurring them on they will soon achieve this. This 4 year blue cock is a M & D Evans Gaby Vandenabeele which was their first bird from Midlands National Flying Club Bordeaux 2013 flying 499 miles on the day also 60 th OPEN BBC Carentan two weeks ago. The Sire is Jas x Jade Leanne and the Dam being Home Alone x Lady of the Rings. Paul and Brian have raced these Myrtle Lofts pigeons since 2000. All birds are flown on widowhood/ roundabout with Brian tending to them in the morning (as Paul works nights) and then both of them in the afternoon. Paul, Wendy & Brian Hyatt. 3 rd OPEN 2 nd SECTION E AND KNOCKING ON THE DOOR FOR THAT 1 st OPEN POSITION IS CHRIS WHITTINGHAM from Wheaton Aston, Stafford who betters his BBC Carentan National position of 2 nd SECTION 12 th OPEN. CHRIS TIMED A 2 YEAR OLD BLUE DE KLAK X JANSSEN GABY VANDENABEELE COCK BIRD, PARENTS BRED by Gary Richards. Chris Whittingham. Geoff & Catherine Cooper of Peasedown St John 4 th OPEN 2 nd SECTION C Geoff and Catherine Cooper clocked a two year old hen to win 4 th National Messac. For a while she was in first place but was overtaken by the longer flyers, this also happened to them on the Falaise National with the BICC. Their fourth National winner, now called Evie after their new grand daughter, was on her second CHANNEL RACE OF THE SEASON. AS A YOUNG BIRD SHE FLEW THE FULL YOUNG BIRD PROGRAMME, INCLUDING THE CHANNEL AND AS A YEARLING FLEW MOST NATIONAL RACES THROUGH TO MESSAC. SHE IS FLOWN WIDOWHOOD AND fed a mix based on Verse Laga Superstar, with Gem Trikanox in the water once a month. If all goes well her main race will be Pau International. She is exceptionally well bred, her two grandfathers are Farm Boy, sire of Farmer George 1 st International Bordeaux and Legend 1 st International Dax. She is a half sister to Georgia Jean who won 8 th International Pau, 1 st Euro Diamond Pau and 4 th Ace pigeon 2014 Euro Diamond. Geoff Cooper. Topping Section B and 5 th OPEN IS LAWRENCE & MARG COWLEY FROM GRIMSTONE, DORCHESTER WITH a widowhood cock having his first channel race. He is a Pearson & Dransfield Busschaert x Soontjen paired to a Mike Staddon Lou Wouter x Chris Gordon hen. He is fed Countrywide Lo Pro Gerry Plus at the start of the week and the last 3 feeds Natural widowhood mixture. Lawrence is over the moon with his Section win as this has been his aim for many years. "I would like to thank Marg for all her help and support and Messrs. Davis and Swain for taking the birds to the marking." Lawrence & Marg Cowley. With his 3 rd SECTION WIN IN A ROW JOHNNY “EAST WIND” ATTRILL FROM SALISBURY 1 st SECTION A. WELL done to the BBC, another great race and well done to all the winners. First to my loft was “Nightmare” my all pooler. That’s 4 x 1 st Sections, 2 x 2 nd Sections, 4 th SECTION ETC. AS I’VE SAID before “What a pigeon”. He is a 4 year old, who just gives his all in each race. Johnny pictured with “Nightmare” as a 2 year old. Johnny “East Wind” Attrill. 2 nd SECTION A ROBERT HARBOUR FROM WHIPPINGHAM, IOW. THE YEARLING COCK I TIMED WAS SENT natural feeding a 2 week old youngster, I have been racing natural this season instead of roundabout due to lack of birds. The Sire to this cock bird is an Ad Schaerlaeckens and the Dam a Deweerdt. This is his 3 rd RACE OF THE SEASON. Robert Harbour and 3 year old Grandson Max. 2 nd SECTION B AND 9 th OPEN IS COLIN CARPENTER & SON CALLUM FROM POOLE. THIS 2 YEAR OLD COCK IS Jansseen bred from birds gifted by my friend's Steve & Tracey Bastable. His grand sire being Steve Bastable’s Classic car winner. He is raced on roundabout and seems to have a liking for Messac having scored positions in the Club. Colin Carpenter. Pete Wells from Dunstable 1 st & 2 nd SECTION D 13 th & 14 th OPEN. MY SECTION WINNER IS A FIVE YEAR old blue hen. She has won many prizes and bred good prize winners. She is bloodlines of my old Janssen family which go back to my champion "Super Lou" who won 52 x 1 st prizes. In the previous Carentan race she was 148 th OPEN 10 th SECTION D. The 2 nd bird is a yearling blue chequer cock. Sire bred by Simon Schofield from Leeds and the dam is a Jose Thone cross daughter of "Miss Leeds" also a very good pigeon of Simon’s. This yearling cock was 3 rd CLUB 9 th Fed Carentan on the previous Saturday. Pete Wells. Roles are reversed this time around as runner up to Pete Wells in Section D and 16 th OPEN IS ROGER Lowe from Reading who pipped Pete to the top spot from the BBC Carentan race. My 1 st bird is a 2 year old widowhood cock now named “Red Ron” son of “Fast as lightning” winner of the BBC young bird National by 25 minutes. “Red Ron” is already a winner of 17 th SECTION 21 st OPEN CSCFC CARENTAN 1,946 BIRDS, 10 th Fed Honiton 2,553 birds and 2 nd SECTION 9 th OPEN BBC Fougeres 1,152 birds and is the nest mate to “Red Rose” winner of 2 nd OPEN NFC THE DAM OF THE SECTION WINNER IN LAST BBC RACE. Sending 21 widowhood cocks, I had 17 on the day and 2 the next morning. I would like to congratulate the winner and also Peter Wells for winning the Section. Roll on the next race. Well done to the Committee and Officials for a great race. Roger Lowe. (Is this Roger Lowe in disguise!!!) With Jersey joining us for their first BBC race of the season 1 st SECTION H IS KEVIN JOHNSTONE FROM St Helier. I'd first of all like to dedicate this win to my very good friend, the late Laurence Le Ruez and his family who kindly let me keep my birds in his lofts. This dark chequer yearling cock is a broken pigeon and was gifted to me by a good friend of mine, Nigel Legg from Guernsey. It was bred out of a son off Jim and Ann Donaldson from Scotland, a pigeon called Doonan and a Kevin Murphy hen off Jim Donaldson Rennes Lass bloodlines. This bird was there to win three young bird races if only it would trap, it is still the same now as I lost 10 minutes on this race as it would just not trap. I told Nigel last year that I fancied this bird, I said it’s got something and I was right, thanks Nigel. P.S Still waiting for my dropper Nigel. Kevin Johnstone. 2 nd SECTION H IS WILLIAM HEALY FROM ST HELIER WITH SMOKE RISE. I NAMED MY PIGEON SMOKE RISE after his 1 st SECTION, 6 th OPEN FOUGERES WIN LAST YEAR. He is a black pied 3 year old cock of the breeding Jan Arden on the sire’s side and the late Joe Letchio Alloa cross Geoff Kirkland on the dam. He was sent sitting 10 days on eggs and in excellent condition on his return. I congratulate my friend Kevin Johnstone on his section win and good luck to all BBC members for the future races. William Healy’s Smoke Rise. Another Section where roles are reversed for this race is Section G with Tony & Carol Welch taking 1 st , 2 nd , 3 rd , 4 th & 5 th SECTION. MY FIRST PIGEON WAS A BLUE COCK BIRD JANSSEN. IT WAS BRED down through a pigeon I required from my mate Lou Severe which was a blue Janssen hen bred from Martin Mitchell, which flew them out of 500 miles on the day. Just recently I had a heavy fly away of young birds, so I would like to take this opportunity to thank Robbie Jones, Mick Morter, Ian Crammond & Nigel Langstaff for their kind gift of youngsters which has redeemed my young bird team. They are true gentleman of the Sport. Many Thanks. Tony Welch. Runners up to Tony and Carol Welch are another married partnership Mick and Lyn Chaplin from West End, Woking who were placed 1 st , 2 nd & 3 rd SECTION G FROM BBC CARENTAN. The pigeon was a yearling cock raced on widowhood and in the previous BBC race was 2 nd SECTION. It was his fourth race of the season. The birds are fed a good widowhood mixture and once racing has started they do not receive any more training and are expected to race every week. We have a 20 foot loft and race 20 cocks and breed about 35 youngsters mostly from the racers as we only keep 5 stock pairs. Mick & Lyn Chaplin. Nigel Lane from Romford with his 2 nd SECTION J WIN OF THE SEASON. I must confess I was extremely pleased to see “GODERIC” return in good time today as he was my first pigeon back from Messac last year and seemed to be all set for Tarbes but then we had Niort. He was actually my third pigeon at Niort but not until 13th June, 5 days late and I found him caught fast and hung upside down from the anti-cat netting above my loft. He was totally exhausted and reduced to skin and bone; I thought perhaps all hope had gone. This year he was my second pigeon from Carentan and now the first from Messac so perhaps there is hope yet. On the sires side he is down from the very successful Barcelona pigeons of Family Huizer while on the dams side from a hen given to me by Harm Vredeveld from his old long distance pigeons. Nigel Lane’s Goderic. 2 nd SECTION J ARE KEITH GOSLING AND MICK JARVIS FROM MOUNTNESSING TIMING THEIR SECTION WINNER in the BICC race from Falaise two weeks ago. The two year old chequer cock flown on widowhood competing in only his third ever channel race having been the first arrival to the loft each time. He was 14 th SECTION 25 th National BBC Messac last season, 1 st SECTION FALAISE AND NOW 2 nd SECTION. SINCE THE SECTION WIN HE HAD AN INLAND RACE FROM 100 miles and a 40 mile training toss prior to basketing. His sire is Kato grand son of Vend 1 st NFC Pau bred by Jim Biss and the dam is the daughter of Steve Wakerley’s famous blue cock flying Pau twice on the day, Tarbes and Perpignan. Mick is holding the 2 nd SECTION WINNER AND KEITH THEIR FIRST arrival from the BICC Alencon race probable 10 th SECTION. Mick Jarvis & Keith Gosling. Unfortunately, no reports to give on Secion F. Convoyers report. With all 2,271 birds loaded on the transporter we made our way to the docks arriving at 7:30 pm. The birds were fed and watered ready for the crossing to France arriving at 06:30. The birds were watered at the docks for two hours before departing to Messac. After the 150 mile journey with clear blue skies with very little wind, we arrived at 11:30 and the birds were all watered and rested before feeding at 3:00 pm. The call to Steve Appleby gave me excellent flying conditions for the following day so things were looking promising for another good race this year. Saturday dawned clear sunny and warm but with some early morning mist about. After a call to Steve telling me that conditions were good all the way across the channel and into the mainland, we cut the strings and the birds were away at 07:45 clearing immediately to the north. The journey back was hot and sunny and the channel was flat calm all the way to the mainland. My thanks yet again to all the markers, Bill our driver, Steve for yet another spot on forecast and last but not least Clare our secretary, keeping every thing running so smoothly. Nigel Rigiani Weather Report Examining the various images from weather satellites showed clear blue skies over northern France. The only cloud visible was located over the south east of England mainly along the south coast line. Some areas of the channel were affected by cloud but of little significance. These weather conditions as forecast presented a good day for the BBC pigeons racing from Messac. Due to the winds being light, direction difficult to determine over land both in France and in England. Over the channel direction was mainly from the north east at about 7 mph. Visibility good overall with data showing 11 miles plus over the open sea. I updated our convoyer Nigel with the weather conditions at 06:50 after which time he decided to liberate at 07:45. Steve Appleby Messac liberation. Telephone & Website verifications only, which may be subject to change.
