President: Nigel Rigiani Chairman: Mike Shepherd Patron: Mark Gilbert Coutances YB National Coutances OH National 1 st & 2 nd OPEN 1 st & 2 nd SECTION C 1 st OPEN 1 st SECTION C Steve Slade from Calne Tony Lucas from Royal Wootton Bassett With “Curtis & Charlie” With “Sandy” The curtain was brought down on another season for the British Barcelona Club and a change of race point was used due to Vire being off limits. Coutances was the destination for the young bird and old hens Nationals with 138 members sending 944 youngsters and 51 members entering 145 old hens. Coutances is situated south of Lessay and seems an appropriate race point to use as it gives the birds a run up the peninsula before crossing the channel. The weather was being unpredictable for the Bank Holiday weekend and changing with every forecast given but Saturday dawned and a window in the morning was available and Nigel liberated the birds at 7.15am in to a light South East wind changing direction in the UK. Our thanks and gratitude must go to everyone who has taken the time and effort to assist at all marking stations, your help is invaluable. A special mention and thank you to my son Jack Norman who is indispensible to me for all his help this season. The winner and Runner up of the Coutances Young Bird National is someone who has had an exceptional couple of seasons winning several Sections, numerous 2 nd Sections and being placed high up in the open positions taking 1 st & 2 nd OPEN 1 st & 2 nd SECTION C IS STEVE SLADE FROM CALNE. First and second Open a dream come true. I would like to thank the convoying team for the condition of the birds in what turned out to be a trying race and as my friend Frank is sat writing this I have 18 birds home out of 30. Clare said more info required so here goes. I started racing with my dad Victor at the age of 16 in the village of Goatacre, till I married and have flown on my own since 1980. Dad still races pigeons at the age of 92 and beats me now and again. My present family of birds is mainly my old Janssen and Busschaert which have won all before them in sprint to middle distance races. In the last few years I have been getting a team of long distance pigeons together mainly John Halstead, with others from Paul Stephens, Frank Quinn, Wilf Reed and Tony Stephens. On to the birds themselves I have named them after my grandchildren who live in America. My first bird is now called “Curtis” bred in the race loft from “Stevie G”. the Central Southern Classic Clubs Champion old bird 2015 and “Maegan” winner in 2015, 1 st SECTION 10 th OPEN BBC MESSAC, 1 st SECTION 8 th OPEN CSCFC MESSAC. “CURTIS” THE WEEK BEFORE WON PROVISIONAL 18 th OPEN GUERNSEY Classic. My second pigeon called “Charlie” is bred from birds in the stock loft. The sire from Paul Stephens of Radstock and the dam from Frank Quinn. So that's it , I would like to finish by congratulating all the Section Winners and my old mate Tony Lucas on winning the Old Hens race, well done to you all. Steve Slade 3 rd OPEN 3 rd SECTION C DEAN AND TRACY PEART FROM GLOUCESTER ONLY REJOINING THE CLUB JUST A FEW weeks ago in order to send to this race. They have had a great couple of weekends also scoring well with the Central Southern Classic Flying Club from Guernsey. Thanks to Marking station at Hungerford and the convoyers. We had 10 out of 18 in just over an hour in very good condition. Our first bird, chequer cock, is probably in the first 10 of CSCFC Guernsey last week. The Sire won 1 st CLUB, 2 nd West of England South Road Combine from J Whitaker, Brambley lofts. Dam won 1 st CLUB, 5 th Combine from Grandson to Shadow M & D Evans. Well done to fellow club members Stuart Luff and Phil Walker winning 3 rd OPEN OLD HENS. Dean and Tracy Peart John Hallam from Dukinfield is 1 st SECTION E 4 th OPEN FLYING 307 MILES. THIS BIRD WAS BRED BY myself, its breeding is Bruggeman x my own old breed which have flown very well for me in the past. This young bird has been on the darkness system, due to the fact of having young bird sickness twice I have missed most of the racing this season, so my birds have only been trained and this was my first race, a bit of a jump to say the least. John Hallam’s hen 5 th OPEN 2 nd SECTION E IS CHRISTINE, PAUL & COLIN BECKETT FROM DUNSTON (FLYING AS MR & MRS Beckett & Sons). This family have had another successful year with the British Barcelona Club being 12 th OPEN 8 th SECTION CARENTAN, 1 st SECTION 38 th OPEN MESSAC, 15 th SECTION 114 th OPEN Fougeres and 7 th SECTION 16 th OPEN BORDEAUX. THE PIGEON THEY HAVE NOW TIMED TO BE PROVISIONAL 5 th OPEN 2 nd SECTION E BEING HELD BY CHARLIE IS “98” WHICH IS A SOONTJEN HEN BRED FROM PIGEONS FROM Mr A Roper from Penkridge. She has been raced up to 150 miles prior to been sent to Coutances and has been just behind their lead pigeons. They would like to thank Malcolm Blackmoor for training their pigeons. Paul and Charlie Beckett 1 st SECTION D IS JOE DEVILLE FROM CAMBERLEY. THE YOUNGSTER I TIMED WAS ONE OF MY FAVOURED pigeons from my Van Dyck/ Huybregts bloodlines sent sitting on 1 day old babies. I breed about 40 youngsters a year and they are all put on the darkness system until the second week in June. After coming off the darkness I let them exercise around the loft for about three weeks before they start their training regime. They are given lots of tosses up to about 25 miles and kept at that point until the first race. They race the full young bird programme with a mid week training toss thrown in. They are not purposely paired up but I like them to do so for a bit of an incentive. I have won the Section many times before and also won the BBC from Rennes back in 1998 I have also won the UBI Combine 5 times in the last 7 yeàrs and also won the L.S.E.C.C 4 times. Joe Deville Brian and Dick Chitty from Kings Langley are 2 nd SECTION D. WE STARTED RACING IN 1954 WITH OUR late father. After our dad died, we raced on our own for a number of years and formed the Chitty Bros partnership in 1986. We changed from North road to South road that year. We purchased new birds and had a lot of success with them almost straight away having many good POSITIONS IN N.F.C AND WE ALSO WON THE L.S.E.C.C TWICE AND ALSO WON 8 COMBINES. This year we had a very poor old bird season but the young birds are flying very well dropping twelve or more at the time, having four or five in the Club and good F.B.D positions as well. The pigeon that came, went to the Spelthorne Open on the Wednesday and was then sent with the BBC on the Thursday morning sitting four eggs. The pigeon was purchased on one of Brian s trips to Holland from Lelieveld V.D Locht. Brian and Dick Chitty Topping Section A and also 3 rd SECTION IS JAMES FULFORD FROM SALISBURY. THANK YOU TO ALL WITHIN the BBC for all their organising and congratulations to the winners of the race. Ben and Katie are holding my 1 st and 3 rd SECTION WINNERS. THEY ARE MICHAEL VAN LINT X A E Shepherd and a Gaby. I would like to thank Dave Day for all his support with pigeon training and building my new loft last year and John Attrill for supporting me with some new birds to help me raise a team after I had moved house. James Fulford with Ben and Katie Tony Darling and Darren Ede 2 nd SECTION A IS TONY DARLING & DARREN EDE FROM SOUTHAMPTON. FIRSTLY, WE WOULD LIKE TO congratulate the winners. This was our first BBC race so we was happy with the result, the breeding of our hen was Andreas Drapa through birds bought at his auction in 2013 through Les Green. I would personally like to thank my racing partner Tony for all his hard work & dedication, 3 months ago I broke my leg & he has been doing 90% of the work. Thank you to Clare & Martin for all their hard work & all our members at Sholing RPC. What a nice change to see Nick and Christine Smith from Salisbury leading Section B. It is normally one of the other mischievous devils from Salisbury Pigeon Club. First I would like to congratulate Steve Slade on his win. Our bird is a chequer hen sent sitting 12 day eggs. Her sire is a gift bird from my good friend Andy Parsons and is from his Nethercott lines which has produced many good birds for Andy. Her dam came from Mark Gilbert and is a granddaughter of Southfield Supreme his Dax International winner. Nick Smith 2 nd SECTION B MARK AND JULIE GOWER FROM FORDINGBRIDGE. FIRSTLY CONGRATULATIONS TO STEVE SLADE who has capped a fine season with this result. My bird is bred from a Noel Perein cock that is related to Noel’s Barcelona National Winner this year when paired to a hen from Joe Murphy’s 4 th OPEN SCOTTISH NATIONAL ALENCON. This was her first competitive race this year having been trained East & West privately. She is flown on the natural system just coming back to her perch and fed on standard Countrywide young bird mix. I sent 14 and had 5 birds in good time but only ended up with 7 back by nightfall. A big thanks to wife Julie & good friends Andy Parsons and Nick Smith for help with taking the birds to marking and also congratulations to Nick on winning the Section. Mark and Julie Gower 1 st SECTION G IS KHAN BROTHERS FROM NEW MALDEN TIMING A DARK HEN THAT WAS SENT SHOWING TO A cock, both her parents were bred by ACE LOFTS and she comes down from there "L ring" hen line, she was previously raced in a couple of Club races in preparation for this National. Khan Brothers 2 nd SECTION G IS TONY & CAROL WELCH FROM CHICHESTER. THIS BLUE CHEQUER HEN WAS BRED TO FLY middle distance and was trained twice a week from about 25 miles. This was its third channel race taking 2 nd SECTION THIS TIME. IT TOOK 3 rd in the South Coast Fed on the 15 th August from Guernsey with 871 birds and was sent to the CSCFC Guernsey and was my first bird clocked from that race. Tony Welch WINNER OF THE OLD HENS NATIONAL IS TONY LUCAS (A P & S M LUCAS) FROM ROYAL WOOTTON Bassett. Tony began racing with his wife Sandy in 1978. Sadly 4 years ago Sandy passed away through illness but Tony still kept her name in the partnership as she always did her fair share with the birds and now his 5 year old blue bar hen is named after her. “Sandy” is bred down from Foxwood Lofts lines and apart from a couple of 2 nd POSITIONS IN THE LOCAL CLUB THIS IS HER BEST performance. Along with some other old hens that had lost their cock birds “Sandy” was put in with the young birds and then trained with them to try and help the youngsters. As she seemed to being doing well Tony decided to enter the old hens race. Tony would like to congratulate Steve Slade on his performance. Tony Lucas 1 st SECTION E 2 nd OPEN ALAN & CYNTHIA SHORE FROM CREWE. DAISY DOO, GB12N32894, HAS DONE IT again. After getting 2 nd OPEN, 2 nd SECTION BORDEAUX IN THE BRITISH BARCELONA CLUB SHE LOOKED SO well that we decided to put her back in to BBC Coutances Old Hens race. She was paired and was sitting 12 days so the night before basketing she was given a young one. She has now earned her place in the loft and will probably be kept back for stock. She was followed shortly after by three more old hens all bred the same way, our Danny Boy lines crossed with those of John Barnett & Daughter. Alan Shore 2 nd SECTION C IS THE PARTNERSHIP OF STUART LUFF & PHIL WALKER FROM DURSLEY. OUR HEN IS A YEARLING, bred by club mate Ivan Hofton of Gloucester. Being a consistent racer as a young bird, winner of 5 th Gloucester & District Breeder Buyer last year. During the old bird season she was a widowhood hen confined to the hen boxes for most of the week. We have considered this a waste of good pigeons for some time now, and decided to have a go at racing hens on widowhood next season. This had prompted us to have a go at racing the hens in the Specialist Clubs, this we have never done before. With this in mind the hens were given a section of there own and trained with the West of England South Road Combine young bird programme. They were then paired to be sitting eggs for these races, this week she was sitting on 16 day eggs. She has been showing form weekly as being up there with the first youngsters to the loft most weeks, and winning probable 12 th OPEN CSCFC Guernsey last weekend. Her breeding is Bertie Camphuis Janssen x Vandenabeele the dam being a very good racer for Ivan. Congratulations to our club mates Dean & Tracey Peart on another good result taking 3 rd OPEN Young birds. Stuart Luff and Phil Walker 1 st SECTION A IS PHIL PRIDDLE FROM SOUTHAMPTON. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WINNER AND SECTION Winners. I would also like to thank the Secretary, Markers and Convoyer etc making racing possible this year. This hen has been 3 rd SECTION BBC MESSAC, PROVISIONALLY 7 th Sect Guernsey Old Hens CSCFC. A very consistent racer she comes from my old family of Leferbe Dahenens, which has flown very well for me over the years, winning a few hundred pounds in pools. Phil Priddle 2 nd SECTION E IS BRIAN & SUE STONE FROM BELPER. OUR GRIZZLE HEN GB12Z20788 IS A WINNER OF many prizes inland and channel racing. In the last 3 years she has been 2013 4 th SECTION E 13 th OPEN Fougeres Old Hens BBC. 2014 10 th SECTION E 59 th OPEN FOUGERES OLD HENS BBC. 2015 2 nd SECTION 6 th OPEN OLD HENS THIS RACE. THIS HEN IS REALLY ONE OF OUR TOP STOCK HENS RACED SPARINGLY SHE WAS bred from a grizzle hen bred off Waaire when paired to Diego hen. This is a top pair of Peter Foxes stock birds she was loaned to us from our good friend Jack Walker (many thanks Jack). The sire of z20788 was bred by Jack Corns of Galaxy Lofts and was a gift to MNFC breeder buyer race. I believe he was of the best Jupiter lines. Last year z20788 bred our 1 st SECTION WINNER IN MNFC FROM Carentan. Sue now wants to call her “CRACKER JACK” Brian and Sue Stone 1 st SECTION D IS STEVE SHEFFIELD FROM WINCHMORE HILL. THE PIGEON WHICH TOOK 1 st SECTION, 8 th OPEN is a yearling Blue hen which this season has taken 2 nd CLUB, 11 th Fed as well as scoring as a young bird. The sire was bred by Brian Cowen and contains WLG breeding and the dam is a Soontjen. Steve Sheffield 2 nd SECTION A BEN SMITH & DAD (BRUCE) FROM SOUTHAMPTON. THIS YEARLING HEN WAS OUR SINGLE entry and was gifted to us by Keith Davison of Holbury. She was flown regularly at Club level but has never excelled at this level, but she was always one of our first birds home. Bruce Smith 2 nd & 3 rd SECTION D IS BARRY SHERMAN & STEVE WELLS FROM OXFORD. FIRST PIGEON CLOCKED IS BRED down from a Son of Tipps and Blue Janssen hen. Second bird was the one we were 2 nd SECTION OLD Hens CSCFC Guernsey with last week, a widowhood Drapa x Koopman yearling chequer hen. Both these hens will be off to the NFC Guernsey OH race next week. Barry Sherman 1 st SECTION B JOHN HALSTEAD FROM KINGTON MAGNA WITH A BLUE PIED YEARLING HEN BRED FROM ‘Artie’, a younger brother of Nyland Ashley who was 2 nd OPEN BARCELONA IN 2008. ARTIE WAS repurchased from the late Artie Baverstock of Poole in 2013. This hen was 10 th SECTION 186 th OPEN NFC Fougeres as a young bird. She had lost her form completely during June this year after a couple of hawk attacks in training and racing but had been re-paired, left to rear a youngster and slowly brought back into training during August. A three day old baby in the nest was her motivation. This is the 11 th time John has been in the top 50 Open in Nationals this season. John Halstead 2 nd SECTION B IS TONY COTTRELL, OLLIE & MARTYN RICHMOND FROM WIMBORNE TIMING THEIR YEARLING blue pied hen who was sent paired up and sitting tight on eggs. She hasn’t had too many races this season being a yearling and not being pushed too far. A nice finish to a fantastic season for them. Tony, Ollie & Martyn 1 st & 2 nd SECTION G IS MICK AND LYN CHAPLIN FROM WESTEND VILLAGE, WOKING. THE TWO HENS WHO are 1 st and 2 nd SECTION DROPPED TOGETHER AND BOTH WERE HAVING THEIR FIRST RACE OF THE YEAR AFTER ACTING as widow hens and then being paired up at the end of the old bird season and were both sent sitting chipping eggs. The 16 widow hens are all paired up so as to compete in the BBC, BICC and NFC old hen races at the end of the season. In the young bird race we were also 4 th SECTION WITH A COCK racing to the perch. Mick and Lyn Chaplin Runner Up in Section G is Pip Hughes from Chichester. Due to work commitments Pip doesn’t get as much racing in as he would like. This yearling hen timed never raced as a youngster and was having the first race of her life. She was sent paired up and sitting babies and is bred from Pip’s old family of Simon Westcott birds. Not having had much training her exercise is an open loft all the time to come and go as she pleases. Pip Hughes 1 st SECTION H IS GLEN MOON FROM ST HELIER, JERSEY. WELL, I MUST GO AND SEE A PSYCHIATRIST AFTER letting my heart rule my head and send to this race point Coutances. This race point is only 32 miles to me, easy you think but not on your life. On paper it may be only 32 miles but in reality it is 300 miles and more. My first young bird arrived at 9am on “Sunday” morning flown to a stand still, but you can only fly what the BBC puts in front of you. Now to the pigeon I did time in, a blue yearling hen which Clare told me was the only pigeon in the CHANNEL ISLANDS IN RACE TIME, WHICH WAS A SHOCK TO ME AS THIS BIRD HAS NEVER FLOWN ANY RACE POINT ON the day. It was bred for me by Paul Davies off a Grandson and Grand daughter of “Kimlyn” the 2005 Perpignan International Winner from pigeons bought by the late Tom Scott from Twan Bongess of Holland. Once again I must thank Clare for all she does for the Channel Islands. Glen Moon Convoyers Report Thursday 27th August With the 1,089 birds loaded for the final BBC race of the year we set off for a brand new site in north west France on the Cherbourg peninsula, situated approximately fifty miles south of Cherbourg and ten miles east of the west coast of the peninsula giving a perfect line of flight up the coast and out to sea. Friday 28th August We arrived on site at 08:30 and parked on the large hardstand outside of the gated lib site due to a cattle and horse show on for that day, the birds were watered then fed at 2:00 pm and then re watered, at about 5:00 pm the show had finished and the site was clear for us to move into position ready for the next day. I then made a call to Steve for a forecast for the following day which was not to promising to say the least with heavy cloud and rain on the mainland. Saturday 29th August At 6:00 am the site was cover in thick cloud and the wind sock on the railway station was giving a SE wind and to the south we could see blue sky heading our way so a call was made to Steve Appleby telling me that things had improved overnight and the channel was clear and the rain forecast for the mainland was due to move along the south coast during the early afternoon so if we could get an early lib the birds would beat the weather. By 6:45am the skies were clearing overhead so at 7:00am the strings were cut ready for a 7:15am lib giving half an hour for the cloud to dissipate. At 7:15 the flaps were dropped and all the birds headed to the west side of the cathedral which is on a hill to the north of the lib site and out of sight immediately in one batch. Early indications are that it has been a successful race with early birds in the west and east and as far as Crewe in the north west and Newcastle in the north east so good coverage all over the country. This has been a difficult season with the weather giving us two holdovers on the trot at the beginning of the season and a very strong north wind making our Palamos race very hard but the weather then came good for Fougeres, Bordeaux and finally this race from Coutances. I would like to close this final report for the 2015 season by thanking all the markers and I/C’s without you the races would not be possible, to Bill our driver, to Steve Appleby for making my job so much easier when he gives me good weather and finally to our secretary who sadly is leaving us, Clare you have been brilliant and I speak behalf of the committee to thank you for all your hard work, the race reports and final results that you get out so quickly and the way you deal with all the members problems. Now on behalf of all the members of the BBC may we wish you all the very best for the future, we will all miss you and good luck. Nigel Rigiani. Coutances site on Friday Saturday morning Weather Report Analyzing the forecast on Friday evening the prospects for a race from Coutances were all doom and gloom. But a forecast is just that and subject to change. Examining the conditions early Saturday morning a window of good weather presented itself. The race team immediately became upbeat. Over the race point the skies of broken cloud and sunshine allowed Nigel to liberate at 07:15 the birds clearing to the north straight away. With some variations winds generally came from the east south east, light in strength and visibility was 15 miles or more across the channel. Another good RACE TO CONCLUDE THE SEASON FOR THE BBC MEMBERS. Steve Appleby Telephone and website verifications which may be subject to change.
