Bordeaux National 1 st , 2 nd , 5 th & 6 th OPEN 1 st , 2 nd , 3 rd & 4 th SECTION J Dean Childs from Wickford Our Bordeaux race saw the closure of the Club’s old bird season, congratulations to all our 2019 Winners and Section Winners. We hope to see you all at the prize presentation in November. Making the journey down to Bordeaux was a convoy of just over 1,100 birds made up from 848 birds sent by 150 members of the BBC and the other consignment being sent by the South Coast Federation and UBI Combine. Following a one day hold over due to the thunderstorms and heavy rain on the Saturday the birds were liberated at 6.15am on Sunday morning in to a North West wind becoming West North Westerly through France. Across the channel later in the afternoon/ evening the wind turned West South West. Thank you to all the markers and helpers at all the marking stations. All positions are provisional until the clock paperwork has been checked. Timing eleven birds on the day congratulations to our Bordeaux winner Dean Childs from Wickford 1 st , 2 nd , 5 th & 6 th OPEN 1 st , 2 nd , 3 rd & 4 th SECTION J. Firstly, I would like to thank everyone who played their part in keeping the birds in great condition when the hot weather made it more difficult than usual! Secondly, many thanks to all the people that took the time to message or phone me with their congratulations! The system used here at Chalice Lofts for the beginning of the season is the celibate system, no race birds are paired together and they don’t see each other at all until after the first club race when they get to spend 5 minutes together before being split again. The Bordeaux team raced the first 4 BICC races this year out to Cholet and were then either sent to the BICC Agen race or the UBI combine race from Cholet before pairing together which allowed me to send them to Bordeaux sitting 7-10 days on eggs. The winner now named ‘Chalice Dylan’ after my youngest son was bred from my good breeding pair Champ 25 and Chalice Draper and he is a full brother to ‘Chalice Lightening’ who was 2 nd BICC National Guernsey YB. He flew Bordeaux last year as a yearling scoring 18 th SECTION 53 rd BBC National so was always marked down as being one of my main birds for this year’s race! 2 nd National now named ‘Chalice Consistent’ was my 2 nd bird this year from BICC Agen scoring 7 th SECTION 18 th BICC National. She is bred from a son of Southfield Miss Consistent when he was paired to a 1/2 sister of Champ 25 who contains the blood of Southfield Champ and Southfield Supreme 5 th OPEN WHO IS NOT AS OLD AS SHE SEEMS HAVING AN OLD RING ON HER LEG HAS BEEN A GOOD HEN THIS YEAR, she had previously scored 3 rd SECTION 6 th BICC National from Le Mans and she is bred for the distance being a granddaughter of Kannonbaal Barcelona. 6 th OPEN IS A FULL SISTER TO MY BBC 1 st and 2 nd National winners ‘Chalice Dream’ and ‘Chalice Joy’ from my number one middle distance pair ‘Chalice Prince’ and ‘Chalice Princess’. She has been a very Consistent hen for me and has been very reliable! Dean Childs with his two sons Sidney & Dylan Chalice Dylan Chalice Consistent 1 st SECTION D 3 rd OPEN DON GREEN FROM MONKS RISBOROUGH. WELL CLARE HAS ASKED ME TO WRITE A small article, will try to keep it as brief as possible, though that may not be that easy as anyone that knows me would clarify I can ramble on somewhat !!!!! Firstly I would like to congratulate all section winners and also every one that witnessed arrivals from this race, the warmer weather and increase in the numbers of BOP is even starting to make inland racing challenging, so to have to face those same challenges over 400 mile plus races and make it back in one piece is an achievement in itself, and I am sure after endless hours looking into a blank sky the buzz we get when our first arrival is sighted is the same for us all, regardless of the time its taken. To the winner Dean Childs a big well done, I spoke with Dean at marking and told him with the forecast I saw I made him my favourite to win, shame it never seems to work when I fancy his “Greyhounds” !!!! And also very well done to Gary Inkley who is having a tremendous season, I must be honest if someone told me I would be the meat in the sandwich of these two quality fanciers before the race I would of been quite happy, and I am!!!! My 3 rd OPEN PIGEON WHO IS RUNG WITH AN 07 ring was bred in June last year, she was bred down from Marshall, Marshall, Marshall & Smith pigeons I purchased as late breds in 2016 on Elimar, my Good friend Mike Lycett recommended I take look at them as he knew I wanted to take in some of the longer races, I trusted his judgment as with his help in the past I had acquired birds from Gordon Bros, McGimpsy Bros and Lee Painter and all these fanciers lines have won well for me. Anyway some good results have been obtained with these Marshall birds either pure or crossed with the latter fanciers birds. As for the way I go about things re racing my birds, the past few years I have changed things a bit with channel racing in mind, birds are now trained due south rather than south west. Youngsters are trained in three stages 6 mile, 18 mile and 30 mile. They are always trained in twos never more, this way I believe they are not so notable to hawks, less likely to hit wires and have to think for themselves more, on the downside very time consuming. The prep for my team for this race was no club racing for 3 weeks and two 74 mile single up tosses from Verwood, prior to that my 3 rd OPEN HEN HAS HAD 4 CHANNEL races the last being from Messac on 29 th June where she took 13 hours 40 minutes to arrive on a difficult day, they say they learn from their mistakes?? My 2 nd bird a blue pied hen is a half sister to my first (same sire) and has been 12 th UBI Combine from Guernsey this year, my third day bird a chequer hen bred from the late Pete Entwistle’s Pau cock crossed with a machine hen. Had 5 more return Monday so we are half way there. Don Green and Grandson Riley 4 th OPEN 2 nd SECTION D GARRY INKLEY FROM HILLINGDON. A YEARLING REPAIRED WIDOWHOOD COCK SENT sitting 10 days. Previous form includes 5 th Fed Yeovil as a young bird. He had five channel races prior to Bordeaux. Sire was bred by Ko Van Dommelen direct from De Oliebonte and granddaughter of De Paarsborst. Dam is Peroni Naustro daughter of Mark Bulled’s Legacy !!! Garry Inkley and Stanley Garry Inkley’s cock bird 7 th OPEN ALAN MCILQUHAM FROM ENFIELD. OUR BORDEAUX WINNER FROM LAST SEASON. ALAN TIMED A 2 year old blue cock to take 7 th OPEN. Next up in Section J and 8 th OPEN MARK BULLED FROM HARLOW. WELL DONE TO DEAN CHILDS ON A fantastic performance and all those that timed on a real good flying day and fair kind race. Birds were immaculate on return so testament to the convoying team. My timer was a 2 year old hen sent on a 5 day old baby. She is a direct daughter of Legacy 1 st NFC Tarbes paired to the mother of Bump 2 nd BBC Bordeaux who in turn bred Bordeaux Queen 4 th and 5 th BBC Bordeaux 474 miles to me. Mark Bulled with Abbie and Charlotte Mark Bulled’s hen 1 st SECTION J 9 th OPEN BOB BATE FROM LOVEDEAN. FIRST OF ALL I WOULD LIKE TO CONGRATULATE THE OTHER SECTION WINNERS. My first bird was a chequer hen and was bought in an auction sale that was donated by Paul Baker of New Haven. Paul’s birds are bred with distance in mind. She had two early races from Coutances with the Solent Fed, and was sent sitting 12 day eggs. All racers are fed on 50% gem moulting and 50% beans with hemp and peanuts as tip bits. Bob Bate 1 st SECTION G 10 th OPEN DAVE BRIDGER FROM LITTLEHAMPTON WHO TIMED A 3 YEAR OLD HEN NAMED 'Jimima' at 16.44.15 to be the first bird recorded on the mainland only to be overtaken by birds flying further in what had now become a brisk west wind along the coast. The hen had been flown all season on Dave's own version of widowhood where both cocks and hens are raced. Her previous races this year where a few inland outings followed by Cholet and Le Mans before going to Bordeaux. She has a pedigree full of winning pigeons with three of the four grandparents being bred by Dave's good friend Jim Whitehead of Durham out of Syndicate Lofts stock and a hen from P.J Roziers. Jim also bred for Dave the dam of his 1 st OPEN NFC MESSAC WINNER. 'Jimima's' previous performances over the channel have been 9 th SECTION 76 th OPEN FOUGERES AND 14 th SECTION 39 th OPEN GUERNSEY. The birds arrived home from the race in really good condition so Dave would like to pass on his thanks to the convoyers for an excellent job with congratulations to the overall race winner. Dave Bridger Derek Reid 2 nd SECTION G DEREK REID FROM WEYBRIDGE. MY FIRST TWO ARRIVALS BOTH RACED ON THE TRADITIONAL Widowhood system. The first bird was a great grandson of my BBC Bordeaux winner of 2006. My second bird is a grandson of Mick Parish’s Palamos Winner paired to a direct Wim Muller hen loaned to me by A Muir paired to great grandaughter again off my Bordeaux winner. Well done to the new convoyers I have 6 from 8. Congratulations to Dean Childs (should keep to training greyhounds) and well done to Clare and the team. 2 nd SECTION A TONY & SUE LEGGATT FROM HAVANT. CONGRATULATIONS TO MR CHILDS, 1 st and 2 nd (top flying) and all the sections winners. This year my main stay has been my wife Sue, without her help I would not have been able to continue keeping pigeons, let alone race them. The racing this year has been quite hard, the weather always seemed against us, with 9 hold overs, still we have enjoyed our racing and have been in the results. Our yearling cock 'Stonecrest' has been one of our most consistent birds. Thanks must go to our many friends, Dave and Gill Hawthorne, Tony and Sandra Cripps, Rob Poole, members of the Five Heads, Kevin and Vera, Jim and Sheryl, Peter, Dave and Jackie, Paul and Consuela, and not forgetting the man who bred our 1 st bird, Calum Edmiston. Clare and Martin who look out for us. We are so privileged to have such good friends. Tony Leggatt 1 st SECTION C CLIVE & WENDY MERRILLS FROM SWINDON. THE PIGEON IS A CONSISTENT 4 YEAR-OLD chequer cock flown on what now is commonly referred to as ‘chaos’ method. All separated during the week – all together at weekends (race days). Separated after a bath the next day and this is repeated every week. The cocks have an open loft for 2-3 hours early morning, followed by the same period of time for the hens. All have access to aviaries for the rest of the day. No training after the start of racing from May to July. My thanks to Graham Clift from Tirley for donating the Sire (Bryden/DeWeerdt) bought at the BBC 2014 Young bird sale and to Guy Reed, IOW, for the gift of the Dam (DeWeerdt) in 2003. The bird had three races prior to Bordeaux, one inland and two overseas from Fougeres the last being the 29 th June and has rested since then. My congratulations to all the other winners. See you at the Presentation. Clive and Wendy Merrrills Clive Merrills 1 st SECTION H WILLIE HEALY FROM JERSEY. MY TWO YEAR OLD CHEQUER PIED COCK IS A VAN DER WEGEN cross that late Jo Letwcio of Alloa blood lines. He was sent sitting on ten days eggs, he flew Bordeaux last year but out of race time. I fly my pigeons naturally. On behalf of myself and the Channel Island Pigeon Fanciers, we would like to say how much our Secretay and friend Kevin Johnstone would be pleased with the result and looking down on us. Will never be forgotten RIP. Thanks again to Clare Norman for all the help she gives to the Channel Island Pigeon Fanciers. Willie Healy 2 nd SECTION C BRIAN & LINDA DIXON FROM MILTON UNDER WYCHWOOD. OUR FOUR YEAR OLD BLACK HEN has been very consistent with the original stock from John Musselwhite of Wargrave. She comes from Ebony Arden. Jan Arden, Krauth stock. In 2018 she raced in two channel races and was first bird back to the loft on both occasions. In 2018 she was 4 th SECTION BORDEAUX. This small black hen was carrying nine and half flights and was sitting twelve days, she was paired up in April. We plan for her to race either Bordeaux or Bergerac in 2020. Congratulations to all section winners and particular to our section winners Clive & Wendy Merrills. Brian and Linda Dixon Mick Hughes from Market Drayton after winning the National Flying Club from Sigogne the previous week he now tops Section E from Bordeaux with his son Daniel Hughes taking 2 nd SECTION E. BOTH MICK’S AND DANIEL’S BIRDS ARE HALF BROTHER TO THE SIGOGNE NFC WINNER. DANIEL’S IS A yearling not raced as a young bird and only been raced a few times this season. Mick and Daniel Hughes 1 st SECTION B MARG & LAWRENCE COWLEY FROM DORCHESTER. MARG & LAWRENCE TIMED IN A YEARLING hen flown roundabout and has been raced somewhere every week until the day before NFC Tarbes when her section were left together until the end of the season. She was sent on a small youngster and she is the best of ours from Bob Mckie, Newcastle (Sportsmans FC) – Brian Denny x Peter Virtue. Bob sends us down a few most years – Thanks Bob. She was fed once a day on Countrywide Low Pro Jerry plus & hi fat energy & red maize mixed with Gem-thepax, brewers yeast and sunflower hearts. She was fed at 3 pm so she could pick before they changed over. Thanks Marg and all at Frome marking station – we really enjoy helping. This year he raced from CSCFC Messac, Dorset Fed Messac & Carentan then to Bordeaux. He was sent to the race oversitting eggs and had 3 training tosses. He has been fed on Superstar Plus & Countrywide Fat Mix. Our second pigeon was the hen bred by Max Gollop which won Section B for us in 2018, she had the same preparation as our first bird but made a mistake from BBC Cholet and went missing for 12 days but she made amends for us in this race. We would like to send special congratulations to Lawrence & Marg Cowley on winning Section B and thank them for taking our birds to the marking station. Thanks to the convoyer the birds were in good condition on return from the race. Marg Cowley Kevin and Chris White 2 nd SECTION NIGEL LEGG (R LEGG & SON) FROM GUERNSEY. Congratulations also goes to all other section winners. My pigeon was a two year old late bred hen raced natural, being chased to nest. She was on her fifth trip to France this year, her most recent flight being with the BBC from Cholet. She is a very consistent hen, bloodlines of Roger Phillips x Heinz57 strain.
