BURTON & SOUTH DERBYSHIRE FEDERATION.

Daniel Kurylo of Stretton takes top spot out of Guernsey (2).

Saturday June 27th saw our birds at Guernsey for the second time this season, again convoyed by the Heart of England Fed.

There was intense heat during the week leading up to the race; with temperatures here in the Midlands reaching the mid thirty degrees. This put a few people off, but 30 members sent 221 birds, still a good effort.

The birds were liberated at 06-45 in a South East wind, turning south en route; a fast race was on the cards, and the leading birds made the expected speeds, but it was far from straight forward, with some experienced birds making hard work of it, whether they went up the west side of the country we don’t know?

Congratulations to Daniel Kurylo of Stretton who timed in the fed topper on 1808, the winner a 3yo blue Leo Hereman cock bred by friend Rafal Andrzejczak of Birmingham, he was 5th club; 14th fed Guernsey (1), on the day Dan also took 8th fed.

It’s great to see youngsters getting involved in our sport, and at Stretton we are lucky, Fed winner Daniel Kurylo has a 7 year old daughter Hanna who loves pigeons, and she has recently got involved helping out on marking night, following her Dad around and chalking the tally on the crates. She is always talking to the pigeons in the crates, and stroking them. I asked Hanna if she likes dolls or drawing, she said “No, I like pigeons”.

We also have Pete Cox’s young 5 year old grandson Harrison, it was lovely to see him helping his granddad in with the basket on marking night. Pete told me a few weeks ago, he took his hens for a short training toss, and young Harrison went along, on their way home on the A38 Harrison said “Granddad, do your pigeons know your van?  To which Pete replied, I don’t think so, why do you ask?                                   Harrison said “Because they are above us now following you home”, and to Pete’s astonishment, they were.

There MAYBE another youngster who I’ll let you know about once the young bird season starts? The clue is “Maybe”, watch this space.
