BURTON & SOUTH DERBYSHIRE FEDERATION.
Russ Bailey goes 7 up out of Bath as Holbrook lofts dominate.
Saturday August 15th was one of them days; it looked a great day for racing with a light northerly wind, blue skies at the lib site, dry and warm with some cloud, but also some blue sky. What materialised was not what we were expecting; the fed top ten will look very good as there was a good kit of birds into Holbrook; but there were some very poor returns to many lofts. By all accounts we were not on our own, loads of feds had difficult racing, and so what proved so difficult for our youngsters?
We know there was no rain around; it was not down to high temperatures; there was some cloud yes, but not dark heavy clouds, and there was still plenty of blue sky. So we can only presume it was something in the atmosphere? We had the solar eclipse 3 days earlier; were GCHQ using their radars, there was the European Athletics at Birmingham; did the wild fires across the country cause a problem, we are just clutching at straws, looking for answers?
There were 2 One loft races Sunday which didn’t fair any better, but what was noticeable was that in the WDW OLR there were more birds home second day than the first, like someone said to me ”It’s as if something has been switched off after the weekend” ?
Inexperienced youngsters seemed to suffer most? As far as where the missing birds are; I know of birds reported in Somerset on the morning of the race, a couple in the Bristol / Bath area, in between Newark and Lincoln; Doncaster; Stoke; Stafford; Chesterfield and Oldbury; so all over the place. It’s heartbreaking for the birds; fanciers; clubs and federations. If anyone has any other explanation as to what caused such poor racing; I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Also, we pay £38 RPRA annual subscription; this is increasing to £40 next year I hear? I don’t think it’s out of order to ask the RPRA to look into (a) Young Bird Sickness prevention; and (b) on days like this, is there anything out of the ordinary affecting the atmospheric conditions. Fanciers, clubs and federations need all the help they can get.
Back to the race, where 52 members from 8 clubs sent 1083 birds; Alys cut the strings at 09-25 and the birds were away in a North wind.
