A low key and disappointing start to the young bird season sees Rob Pearson sweep the board out of Cheltenham.

Saturday July 18^th saw 19 members from 4 clubs send 484 birds to Cheltenham for the opening race of the 2026 season. The recent heat waves have meant young bird training was heavily reduced, it was a case of early morning or not at all when we had the temperatures exceeding 30 degrees, so it was no surprise that the entries were down?

Back to the race, and Alys cut the strings at 08-55 in a light North East wind, the weather was good at the race point; the weather was good at Birmingham as I watched some of the T20 finals day at Edgbaston, and the weather was good at the home end, and the North Staffs Fed liberated at Cheltenham at 09-30; so our birds must have cleared the site all looked good for the birds?

Sadly this didn’t materialise, the leading birds weren’t far off the expected speed, but apart from Rob Pearson up at Holbrook, nobody had the early flurries we normally get with young birds?

I do know some lofts had birds home with sign of peregrine attack, later birds were arriving on line fresh as a daisy, signs that they’d gone to ground for safety, and I’ve heard of a young bird reported down in London, signs of panic flying? I’d guess returns were around the 75% mark at the end of the weekend?

Congratulations to Rob Pearson of Kilburn, flying in the Holbrook club, Rob took the top 20 in the fed, the first ten over the pads in 29 seconds, and 19 over the pads in 75 seconds. Rob sent a strong team numbers wise, but he wasn’t exempt from losses either. Most of Rob’s birds originate off the top Hereman Cuester and Lambrecht stock from Kevin Lawson of New Ollerton. The fed topper on 1339 was a cheq Hereman Cuester x Lambrecht hen; the sire of the dam is a winner of 3 x 1^st fed

The runner up on 1338, another cheq hen; this one bred by Alan Dungworth of Mexborough Rotherham from Dave Thrall of Yorkshire stock via Excelsior lofts. They are a blend of the top Hereman Cuester from Curtis, Wall & Lunt; Brian Johnson “Safier” line and Premier Stud; they are then out crossed with the Mark Jansenne, Raf Claes and “Pink Eyes” blood lines. The sire is “Twin 894” and the dam is “Unlucky Champ”; see photos attached.

3^rd fed on 1337.8 was a cheq Hereman Cuester cock; his sire is a nephew of “Tractor & Trailer”; the dam is off a winner of 2 x 1^st fed.

4^th fed on 1337.2 was a blue Hereman Cuester hen off stock from the top Cumbria loft of Brian Johnson of “Safier” fame.

5^th fed on 1336.7 a blue Cuester x Lambrecht hen.

6^th fed on 1336.7 a Cheq Lambrecht hen, her sire a winner of 3 x 1^st fed.

7^th fed on 1336.5 a Dark cheq Lambrecht x Cuester hen; her sire a winner of 3 x 1^st fed; and her dam is out of a cock that won 2 x 1^st fed

8^th fed on 1334.2 a cheq Lambrecht hen; her sire is responsible for pigeons to win £1400.

9^th fed on 1334.2 was a blue wf hen, bred by Debbie Fearn and purchased at a futurity sale.

10^th fed on 1332 was a cheq Hereman Cuester cock off Brian Johnson stock.

At Stretton, 5 sent 135 and Phil Bourke got a clear winner on 1292, a blue cock, a full brother to the two nest sisters “31” and “32” who took 1^st & 2^nd fed out of Honiton as young birds in 2023. His sire is a full brother to M/M Lycett’s champion “Eddy”, and his dam is a Central Lofts “Kittel”. Daniel Kurylo was 2^nd & 3^rd on 1173; 1171; first a cheq Hereman hen bred by friend Rafal Andrzejczak of Birmingham out of the “Di Caprio” line; she was closely followed by a cheq cock, his sire is Dan’s Guernsey fed topper this season a Leo Hereman cock again bred by friend Rafal Andrzejczak of Birmingham; his dam from Darren Drinkell of Grimsby.

Phil Whetton was 4^th on 1150 with a dark cheq Lambrecht hen, sire from P & S Hares of New Tredegar in South Wales, dam out of a daughter of the good NWHU cock from Matt Munslow.

Into Derby, at Chaddesden Jubilee, 6 sent 94 , and well done to Dave Coote on taking 1^st club on 1212 with a Van den Bulck cock.

S & H W Hall filled the next three spots on 1202; 1199; 1196; Stan timing in a cheq cock off Dave Stone x Van den Bulck stock; a blue wf hen off Russ Bailey x Dave Stone stock; and a blue hen bred by Mick Fearn.

Finally, at Etwall, 3 sent 50 and Alan Peach took the top four on 1182; 1031; 951; 666; the first three all off stock from Bill Dickinson of Cannock Wood, followed by a blue cock off Russ Bailey.
