SECTION D

Roger Lowe from Reading

This race in the BBC’s calendar always has a plentiful amount of birds entered with 1,856 birds being sent by 206

members. With only a handful of members not bothering to verify their first bird it shows what type of race it was.

It made a pleasant change to have a weather forecast predicted which didn’t mean having a holdover.

Nigel telephoned me at 6am on Saturday to say everything looked good to go and due to the west in the wind forecast to be increasing in the channel he was going to liberate at 6.15am which he did.

Thank you as always to all the marking stations and all the helpers for your hard work especially on this race with so many birds to mark in such a short time.

Please could all members make sure their clock is cleared from all old races before coming to the marking station as it holds the marking up for other members. Thank you.

Many congratulations to one man who still cannot be beaten even when he is not 100% fit himself is our Fougeres

Sending 23 birds, 16 widowhood cocks and 7 widowhood hens and having 22 home on the day it turned out to be a

very good day. I would just like to thank Mark Gilbert for not sending and thanks for a good race.

Well I first joined the BBC in 1997 and in my very first race finished 4 th

OPEN FROM THE RENNES Y/B RACE. I WENT TO THE

prize giving night at Bournemouth to pick up Bucks cup, me and my wife were seated at a table with the late great

Kenny Hines and his family, Colin Kinnersley and Geoff and a very young Mark Gilbert, (may I say that really is the nearest I have ever got to Mark)!!!!! Will always remember Kenny saying “Enjoy the walk as its not easy to get a walk to the prize table”. How true that is with so many top class fanciers competing, none more so than our race winner Roger Lowe a great win and my congratulations go to you Roger "Enjoy the walk Mate", also to my fellow

Fed members Pete Wells who is 2 nd

OPEN.

Well I was lucky enough to win the San Sebastian race with the BBC in 2005 and have always focused on the distance races. I left the sport for some years due to moving back to London and restarted again about 3 years ago. I decided to try and get some birds that could fly a bit faster than my own from the shorter races, this led me to a trip up to the Midlands to purchase birds from Ken Lycett, which in turn led to me meeting their son Mike who now is a great friend. He has helped me acquire birds from Gordon Bros and McGimpsey Bros in Ireland, leading to

me winning more Fed cards in the last 18 months than I had got in the last 38 years. He also advises me on the best

ways to manage and race these birds, so a big thank you Mike. The Blue Widowhood cock "all pooler" that came in this race is a Vandenabeele bred from a Gordon Bros cock x

Saffron 222 bred by myrtle lofts. He has been very consistent for me over the past few weeks without actually winning, he was my first bird from the Messac race with NFC a few weeks back which was a really tough affair where he homed with mud up to his wing butts looking very sorry for himself.

May I also say a big thanks to all the people at Walkern Sports, having given a hand at marking on Thursday it made

me realise how much these people do, I myself got there at 9.30 and got home at 4.30 and they were still there

clearing up, so to Mike & Edna Shepherd, Dick Burgin and the other guys there!!! You really are appreciated, (oh and nice coffee Edna) Thanks!!!

Our section winner came well on the day and was racing hard, he is a chequer pied yearling cock racing to a 7 day yb in the nest, he is a Gaby Vandenabeele x Koopman/Van dyke who we call "nobby" due to his character. He has scored minor prizes and 1

OPEN BICC NATIONAL FALAISE AT THE

end of April, but then went down hill fast. Each week after getting good returns but we were a constant 15/30mins behind the winners of Club and Nationals thereafter.... Well I tried altering things as I knew deep down something was not right they were not that bad, but to no avail, even the week before this race I sent 6 to Messac (251miles) which returned in some of the worst weather,

rain, hail and thunder/lightning storms I have ever witnessed, result 6 home from 6 sent but again 30mins behind the

winners.... Well I racked my brains but couldn't find the solution, I was speaking to our friend Aaron Haines from Cheltenham and thrashed things out, canker, cocci, respiratory, fungal but to no avail. He rang me back later and asked did I use a hose pipe when filling the drinkers to which I said yes, could be bacteria, Well ding that triggered something that I hadn't done before, and something I hadn't spotted as I'd been to busy looking at the corns etc (also makes sense looking back due to the fact another mate Keith Palmer, always has a crack with me each week we send to the

Watchfield club as our birds simply rush to the drinkers on the baskets, he says "hey Browny have they had the water switched off again at your place", lol) poor birds must have known that water was clean, ours must have been swimming with bugs of which you couldn't see!!!

Well that Sunday morning I scrubbed/cleaned the drinkers and set about cleansing the birds Sunday pm Monday and

Tuesday am and then built them back up again ready for this weeks races, well it must have worked because our chequer pied cock "nobby" came like a train from Fougeres to record provisional 1 st

can't really complain. So here's looking forward now to the any age and old hen races with the BICC, BBC and NFC.

I would like to say a well done to Roger on a great performance today.

Lily Shipp

2 nd Section G is Fred Hall & Dtrs from Worthing. I timed a yearling blue cock on his first time over the channel.

The Sire is a grandson of CHIPO Benny Stevenink x Syndicate Lofts and the dam was bred by Steve Radcliffe from our shared stock birds, being a daughter of the Good Pair responsible for lots of winners at all levels, lines of

Hannibal, Marita, Figo and Golden Nugget.

Loon hen bred by Chris Platt. She was prepared by being trained from north and south then singled up for two weeks in all weather from Chester 25 miles to the west where we were working.

The next pigeon was a four year old widowhood cock that is very consistent and is Janssen based. Returns from this

RACE WERE VERY GOOD SENT TEN GOT TEN.

Congratulations to my fellow Club mate Colin Edwards from Romsey 2 nd

SECTION A. THE PIGEON I

(GB12N50663) and son (GB13N48061) and arrived together. They are Heremans Ceusters x Jules

Severi. The Heremans Ceusters bloodlines coming from a Cock bird bought at the CSCFC Late bred sale donated by Gordon Emm from Salisbury.

They have raced brilliantly for me all season and I could have just raced these two and nothing else as they fly really well. These are the best I have had for years. I don’t race hens only widowhood cocks. I start the season racing probably the first three Club races and then just the Nationals and

OPEN PROVISIONAL.

She is a yearling hen sitting six days on the first eggs of her life she was sent to fourgeres in preparation for Tarbes with the NFC later on this month. She is a Brockamp pigeon, her sire is a direct son of top breeding hen Valhallah sister of Euro Diamond and her dam is a grand daughter of Armstrong 1 st

International Perpignan.

Rob, Andrew, Roxie & Louie Wilton & Loft Manage Keith Platt

2 nd Section C is Graham Clift from Tirley. My young birds in 2015 were not raced, just trained. The sire of my

yearling hen from Fougeres is from a son of Southfield Supreme that has bred numerous top prize winners for Mark

Sparey, including 1 st Welsh National when paired to a daughter of Geoff and Catherine Cooper's Farmer George, 1

st

International Bordeaux. The dam is a direct daughter of "George", 1 st

National and top breeder for Geoff and Catherine. Well done to all the section and open winners.

Graham Clift

Runner up in Section B to Stuart Jack taking 3 rd

SECTION IS JOHN HALSTEAD FROM GILLINGHAM WITH A BLUE YEARLING

widowhood cock of 100% Hardy Kruger bloodlines. This cock has a great constitution and has been to 8 races this season because he always appears fit and well. He has been prominent in his last 3 races.

On May 28 th he was 2

nd

CLUB AND 2

nd Dorset Fed Coutances 1,024 birds when beaten by a loft mate. Last week he was 3

rd Club from Fougeres and was an obvious choice to compete in the BBC. He had been missing from Guernsey for almost 3 weeks as a young bird and had a few broken flights so would benefit from a good moult but he is one for the future.

John Halstead

Next up in Section E is G Rigby from Telford. I've grown up as a young lad with my late father Michael Rigby and my late uncle Tony Rigby with flying pigeons.

I took my own pigeons on 11 years ago with the guidance from Keith Rhodes and Glynn Machin.

I was introduced to Jim Gibbons by Keith Rhodes for which the winning pigeon had came from.

The pigeon is a Busschaert x Wildemeersch hen, she has flown in the Worcester Fed and Shropshire Fed where she came 2 nd in both young races.

Gene Rigby 2 nd

SECTION J IS TREVOR & ADRIAN WILSON FROM MANUDEN. WELL A POSSIBLE 2

nd

SECTION J AGAIN THIS SEASON. ONCE

again our 2 year old cock is a Leo Van Rjin, a gift from our Cambridge Grantna club mate Billy Maples.

I think Adrian calls him BLANKER (or something like that lol) as he's very consistent at being last home. This week has seen him flying really well at home and a couple of days with his hen before we put him in the basket, has put him in the right frame of mind for this race. He had obviously been through heavy rain as his wattle and eyes were very red. This being the first year with the B.B.C we are pleased with our results so far, but we are not established enough yet to race Bordeaux this year.

Well done to Roger Lowe on 1 st

Convoyers Report For the very first time this year we boarded the ferry with the information that a good race day was forecast for Saturday.

The journey down to Fougeres saw low cloud, mist and the occasional shower, we arrived at

Fougeres at 10:45 am and the birds were watered then fed by 3:00 pm.

The customary call was made to Steve Appleby telling me that all looked good for the next day.

At 4:45 am the day dawned to clear blue skies so the lorry was prepared for an early lib, a call was made to Steve telling me that all was good to go but the wind was due to get stronger from the West

as the day progressed, so the stings were cut at 06:05 ready to go at 06:15.

With sun on the baskets and a moderate South Westerly wind the birds were away to the North in no time at all.

Nigel Rigiani.

Weather Report. The Met Office forecast for Saturday presented a good flying day for the BBC convoy at Fougeres.

On examining the flight path to the English main land the weather conditions were very good. At dawn over northern France the skies were of broken cloud and sunshine with an isolated shower.

The various satellite images showed the channel was under clear blue skies. At the race point Nigel reported the weather conditions were ideal which signaled the green light for an early liberation.

Winds were light westerly over France but over the open sea they were fresh averaging speeds of 25 mph directly from the west and visibility endless.

Steve Appleby.
