Fougeres 1 National 1 st OPEN 1 st SECTION A Paul Basham from Southampton With “Shazam” The forecast on the Thursday and Friday didn’t look too promising for the liberation on Saturday but after a heavy night of rain on Friday in Fougeres, at 7am on Saturday morning the sun was shining and there were clear blue skies. After speaking with Roger to find out the conditions in the channel and the UK, Nigel liberated just over 2,000 birds at 8.05am in to a North North West wind. Thank you to our merry band of volunteers at the marking stations for all your help. All positions are provisional until the paperwork has been checked. Paul Basham Many congratulations to Paul Basham from Southampton 1 st OPEN 1 st SECTION A. TO SAY I WAS surprised to hear Clare’s voice on the end of the phone Saturday afternoon is an understatement. Initially, I thought there might be a problem with my verification!! To hear the words “You have won the BBC” literally blew me away! Our winning bird is a two year old blue widowhood cock named ‘Shazam’ by my son Jake. Shazam is bred down from Brian Long stock on the sire’s side, the dam being a full sister to ‘Mister B’ who scored 1 st SECTION, 2 nd OPEN CSCFC BERGERAC BRED FROM BIRDS MY DAD AND I BOUGHT FROM BRIAN BOLTON, WHO AT that time had the best of the Planet Bros Van Loons. Shazam was only raced inland as a young bird, then through the Southampton South Road Fed programme as a yearling and entered into the NFC Sigogne where he was my third arrival scoring 63 rd SECTION B. This was Shazam’s third race of the 2019 season, his first being from Brighton where he was one of six arriving at the loft together to take the first six in the club, 7 th , 8 th , 9 th , 10 th , 11 th , 12 th Fed. His second race was Falaise with the BICC, then a week off and into the BBC to win 1st Open! Our returns were good having 7 out of 10 on the day and two more first thing Sunday morning. Thanks to the organisers and congratulations to the Section Winners. Shazam 2 nd OPEN 2 nd SECTION A IS MR & MRS MARK HANCOCK FROM WINCHESTER. FIRSTLY, I WOULD LIKE TO congratulate Paul Basham, Bish,Bosh,Bash !! Well done mate. I would also like to thank Clare and all the BBC team, I had 100% return. My first pigeon home was bred from double Grandson of the legendary Harry, bought at Epson show from JPS Lofts and dam Grandaughter Bart Grinx Gladiator bought at Blackpool show. She wasn't raced as a youngster or trained, she is still carrying 3 nest flights, had 2 races to Kingsdown this year and it was the first time over the water on Saturday in the BBC. I sent 6 to the race, all unpaired hens, flirting around the loft. I started racing pigeons at the age of 14, raced North & South road over the years with moderate success. I took a break from racing 2004 - 2015 due to work commitments but I now have a bit more time to spend since restarting and have invested in some top quality pigeons which has paid off. I believe in no fad racing, all pigeons kept together, old and young. I excercise them regularly, they are worked & raced hard, all pretty simple, no medicines. Stock birds are housed at home away from the racing loft, I have 15 pairs of stock birds and these are the only pigeons that I breed from. Mark Hancock and Grandchildren 3 rd & 4 th OPEN IS BUDDY SHIPP FROM PORTSMOUTH. THE TWO BLUE HENS I TIMED ARE 2 YEAR OLD SISTERS, BOTH Bosua from my good cock that won the BBC twice. One of the hen’s won the pools in the Premier Club the week before and looks like she has won the single nom in the clock station. Well done to the winner. Lily Shipp with Young Buddy 1 st & 2 nd SECTION D 5 th & 6 th OPEN IS MARK GILBERT FROM WINDSOR. I HAD TWO BIRDS DROP TOGETHER. THE first on the clock was a cock bred by Nigel Langstaff from a son of Vandenabeele’s “Loverboy” and the mother was from my Saintes National Winner “Champ” when paired to a daughter of “Harry”. The second bird was a hen from a son Of “New Laureaat” 1 st International Barcelona when paired to a daughter of “Starlight” 2 nd International Tarbes. Mark Gilbert 7 th OPEN GEORGE WILLETT & SON FROM PORTSMOUTH. FIRST OF ALL CONGRATULATIONS TO PAUL BASHAM FOR winning. The hen of mine is a pure Vandenabeele hen bred by my good friend Steve Vaizey of Fareham, she is a previous winner of 3 club races in the Milton HS and she started pairing up with a young cock prior to this RACE. George Willett 1 st SECTION C 8 th OPEN MARTIN WILLIAMS FROM HEREFORD. FIRSTLY I WOULD LIKE TO PASS ON MY congratulations to Paul Basham and all the other Section Winners. My report on my first bird carries on from the similar report of the first bird I had in CSCFC race last week. Another 2 year old Roundabout hen, this was also a spare hen who was shut up last year. She raced a full programme as a young bird. Her breeding is my Jan Huybregts x Les Green Merlin line. With similar wind to last week, my club birds doing 46 mph from Kingsdown in the morning, I thought I would get a bird doing 43 mph, but the wind got stronger later. She dropped in on a slightly South East direction, and trapped well to her waiting cock bird. Is this possibly a lesson not to work yearlings too hard? Many thanks to the convoyer, having 7 out of 8 birds on the day and the eighth on Sunday. Martin Williams Denni s Baker 9 th OPEN 3 rd SECTION D IS DENNIS BAKER FROM MAIDENHEAD. The bird is a 2 year old cock flown on the roundabout system on his first time over channel from Harry/Delight blood from Roger Lowe. As a yearling this bird smashed itself up and has a scar down its neck so through injury it never got to go over the water. A yearling brother of his won the Club on same day from Carentan so a very promising line of birds getting 25/26 on the day. 10 th OPEN TED & BRENDA WOODHOUSE FROM STOFOLD. OUR FIRST PIGEON IS A HEREMAN CEUSTER BLUE HEN down from John Dixon of Spalding. She flies on the widowhood system and has been very consistent in the Club races and has a few good results. Ted Woodhouse 2 nd SECTION C CHRIS & JANE HOWSE FROM DEVIZES. WE WERE PLEASED TO TIME OUR YEARLING WIDOWHOOD cock, on his fifth race of the season and its first channel race. His Sire is a brother to our NFC Merit Winner always kept for stock and already a sire of 29 th OPEN NFC. The dam is a grand daughter of Brian Shepherd’s 2 nd OPEN DAX INTERNATIONAL AND CROWLEY AND GREENS Brimstone also 2 nd OPEN DAX INTERNATIONAL ALSO FIRST CSCFC BERGERAC. We would like to congratulate the winner and all other winners, also the convoyers as all birds returned in great condition! We have 17/19 of our entries home. Chris & Jane Howse cock bird 1 st SECTION B NICK & CHRISTINE SMITH FROM SALISBURY. FIRST I WOULD LIKE TO CONGRATULATE THE WINNER P Basham. Our Section Winner is a 3 year old widowhood cock. The parents were bought direct from Mark Gilbert. The sire is a grandson of Golden Gaby and the dam is a full sister to his 2011 Saintes National winner. We enjoyed a good race with 10 birds sent and ten birds home. Nick Smith 2 nd SECTION B TONY COTTRELL OF COTTRELL, RICHMOND & SON FROM WIMBORNE. GB16R33813 “LUCKY 13” Pencil Blue Bar White Flight. His sire GB10N19597 off Mel & Sue King’s Vandenabeeles stock. His dam GB05N54155 bred by Dave Vowles of Street, Somerset off his R & M Venners. She flew Pau/ Tarbes 5 times in the first 100 twice a great racer for me and Ollie. He was sent sitting a two day old baby I slipped under him. His hen deserted on Wednesday night. I noticed he was sitting late 3 days 7 to 8 o clock in the evening but when he came off the eggs she would not sit them so I quickly slipped the baby under him. Within ten minute she wanted to sit it too. I let her sit it that night and just after 6am Thursday morning I took her away. He sat the baby immediately. I came back from work and basketed him for the race After the start of this year having to put down “22 Squadron”, Ollie and my CSCFC Bergerac winner with a tumour like growth in the roof of his mouth and 5 of my race team taken above my loft in 7 weeks by peregrine falcons I have been a bit despondent so this result has lifted my spirits. To the winner of the race and section winners I send my congratulations. On a tough but fair race good pigeons came through and showed their resolve as we must do as pigeon fanciers in these difficult times. Tony Cottrell John Hughes 1 st SECTION E JOHN HUGHES FROM MARKET DRAYTON. JOHN HAS BEEN RACING PIGEONS FOR OVER 50 YEARS. This 3 year old hen is a roundabout hen Leo Van Rijn from Lee Fribbens. She has had 3 inland races and is a consistent pigeon. Bruce McAllister Convoyers Report Firstly I would like to start my report by congratulating our winner Paul Basham and all the section winners on what we knew would be a very stiff race with the forecasted NNW winds. Thursday 9th May With all the birds marked we made our way to the docks and all the birds were fed and rewatered by 18.00. Friday 10th May The journey to Fougeres was cloudy but bright, arriving 10.30 the birds were watered before being fed at 3 o’clock. As the day progressed the cloud thickened and started to rain by 9. Saturday 11th May It rained all night finally stopping at 07.00 and by 07.30 we had clear blue skies overhead and to the North. After a lot of frantic calls to the UK and with things looking good all the way and into England I made the decision to liberate at 08.05 into a moderate NNW wind, the convoy cleared the site without exception to the North in less than a minute. The journey to the docks was sunny and clear with near perfect visibility but a brisk NNW wind and the sea state was calm. Nigel Rigiani.
