Poitiers National 1 st & 2 nd OPEN 1 st & 2 nd SECTION A Tony Barrett of Portsmouth Firstly, just to inform our members the BBC Committee held a meeting on Thursday 14 th July to discuss racing for 2023 and the majority vote by the Committee was to return to south road racing next season. With only the Pau race to go now before the end of the old bird season, (thank goodness). On behalf of the Committee congratulations to all our race winners and sections winners. All the marking stations have been outstanding this season with most of you dealing with three organisations at a time, I cannot thank you enough and I know all members appreciate what you have done for them to enable them to compete. With the extreme weather we have been having and which was forecast, I know the weather advisor and race controller were in close contact this week to keep an eye on the situation. The birds were liberated at 6am on Saturday morning and got a good start before the temperatures started to rise. Thurso race report will follow next week. Brighton Marking Station for Young Bird / Any Age Races Marking for both the YB/AA races in Brighton will take place back at Whitehawk Football Club, East Brighton Park, East Sussex, BN2 5TS. Time: 8.30am – 10am. Tony Barrett Take a bow Tony, Congratulations to Tony Barrett of Portsmouth 1 st & 2 nd OPEN 1 st & 2 nd SECTION A TIMING HIS two birds within 2 seconds. 1 st OPEN NOW NAMED “HAYLEY TRIPLE X” WAS PURCHASED IN A KIT OF 30 SENT DOWN FROM Gary Tomlinson Who Dares Wins One Loft Race for myself, Jason Ross and Mark Drackett, so to decide who was having each pigeon as there was 30 to pick from, we put them in the loft and took turns in picking 1 each. Lucky for me I picked a blue pied hen which I have raced in most races I have entered. She has taken the odd Club card here and there, but today in a very hard race from Poitiers 312 miles in extreme heat she has won 1 st OPEN BICC/ CSCFC/ BBC. I started racing this year on roundabout, towards the middle of June I decided to pair my birds as I was having a weeks holiday. I was getting fed up of just club racing and waiting for my CPH number, so off we went on holiday. My friend Nicky Wilson looked after my birds, he done a great job, the birds had a good rest 9 – 10 days in the loft. (thanks Nick). I received my CPH number and my birds looked fantastic so I thought a nice 300 mile race for their last race of the year, all sitting 10-12 days. I had an open loft for 5 days and a training toss 40 miles and then sent them. The ones that have returned so far are still in fantastic condition thanks to the transport and conveyor. 2 nd Open named “JG” was bred by myself off pigeons I got from my friend John Gerard (I think everyone knows him) Thanks for some fantastic stock birds John. Bloodlines to these pigeons are: Josef 7x 1 st Combine grandson to Thomas 6 1 st Algarve Golden One Loft Race plus the best of William de Briym Golden lines from John Gerard. Lastly, thank you to Jason and Kala Ross for the bottle of Champagne. 3 rd & 12 th OPEN 1 st & 2 nd SECTION C WOJCIECH BLACHUT OF TROWBRIDGE. FIRSTLY I’D LIKE TO CONGRATULATE THE WINNER OF the race Tony Barrett and all the other section winners. This is my third section win this season and once again the winning pigeon is carrying 50 % of all the best Brian Sheppard blood lines crossed with my good friends Robert and patryk sulkowski birds one of the top flyers in Poland at the moment. When I moved to the UK 18 years ago I couldn’t speak one word of English I’d always kept pigeons in Poland so wasn’t new to the sport but everyday I’d see pigeons circling about a mile from my house, one day I decided to follow these birds and it lead Me to Brian’s garden I didn’t know who he was or what he had won or achieved I just wanted to be involved with pigeons again, Brian welcomed me in to his garden and I would just turn up everyday and sit and watch his pigeons but wouldn’t be able to have a conversation with him I could of been anyone and he could of just told me to go away but he never this was the type of person he was would help anyone, he trusted me and eventually over time we struck up a close friendship I will never forget what he did for me not only just helping me with pigeons but also massively in my private life and became more like a second father to me. When Brian was ill, I promised him that I would try my hardest to win with his birds so to get this result on the Anniversary of his passing is even more poignant that is why I have decided to name the pigeon “Brian” in his memory, Brian would always say his family of pigeons can win from 50 to 500 miles so excited to see what the future holds with this cross that seems to have worked well. I would like to thank my partner and my daughter for all their help without them this would not have been possible and to all my friends who have helped me with training and getting my birds to marking stations you know who you are. Wojciech Blachut Paul, Esther and Eamonn Kenny 4 th OPEN 1 st SECTION D PAUL & ESTHER KENNY & FAMILY OF WANTAGE. WE WOULD LIKE TO START BY CONGRATULATING TONY Barrett on winning the race and also being 2 nd OPEN. OUR SECTION WINNER IS A BLUE CHEQUER HEN, WHICH WE BROUGHT off Roger Lowe as a young bird. Raced on the widowhood system, he is bred from a pigeon bred by PIPA that I bought from Les Green at Blackpool. On the dam’s side is a full sister to my NFC Winner of 2005. My second bird is a Grandson of my NFC Winner (sired when 15 years old) paired to a Mark Gilbert hen. He won the first race of the season 2022. Many thanks to all at the marking station, and the convoyers. All pigeons arrived home tired but in very good condition. Derek Reid 8 th Open Roger Lowe of Reading. After a very hot day I was pleased to see them arrive home my first bird is a two year old roundabout hen she had been showing a bit of form in her last race finishing 25 th SECTION 78 th OPEN 3,355 birds NFC St Philbert. Her sire is Fast As Lightning winner of the BBC National in 2011 by 25 minutes also a breeder of 1 st BBC National. Her dam is the 02 winner 1 st OPEN BICC NATIONAL GUERNSEY AND IS A Double granddaughter of My Little Diamond a NFC National Winner. Well done to all the winners after a very trying season. Roger Lowe 1 st SECTION B 9 th OPEN MARK AND JULIE GOWER OF FORDINGBRIDGE. CONGRATULATIONS TO TONY BARRETT WITH TWO exceptional pigeons. My first bird is pigeon purchased at the Watchfield breeder buyer from Mark Brown out of his Gert Heylen stock. It did not do very well as a YB or yearling but this year has started to show especially in a couple of the NFC races returning with plenty of energy. She returned from this race in great condition a testimony to the convoying team. My second pigeon is a Herman Cuester from Premier Stud stock, with both parents section winners. She has scored in Classic racing from both the north and south routes and was a late choice to go in the team as her mate returned the day before basketing and she was so keen on seeing him. Thanks go to Andy Parsons and Nick Smith for taking our birds to the marking. Mark Gower Dave Waterhouse 10 th OPEN DAVE AND LISA WATERHOUSE OF BEDHAMPTON. FIRSTLY WE WOULD LIKE TO CONGRATULATE TONY BARRETT ON winning all 3 races an outstanding performance on a very hot day. Congratulations to all the section winners, our first pigeon is down from my old Jacob family, it has been very consistent racing on roundabout. Can we thank all involved and now looking forward to young bird season. 2 nd SECTION B MEL & SUE KING OF BLANDFORD FORUM. OUR SECOND SECTION BIRD WAS AGAIN FROM OUR VANDENABEELE family. A yearling hen raced on our celibacy system, amongst minor prizes she was previously 2 nd SECTION NFC ST Philbert two weeks ago, 1 st SECTION BBC ST PHILBERT 4 WEEKS AGO AND 2 nd SECTION 22 nd OPEN YOUNG BIRD NATIONAL Guernsey National Flying Club. Her sire is a Grandson of our original “Shadow “Daughter and won 1 st Federation Longest Young Bird race. Her dam is also a Grand daughter of our “Shadow “Hen and a daughter of the sire of 1 st OPEN NATIONAL FLYING CLUB COUTANCES. Thanks go to all involved in putting this race on especially all the hard workers at the marking stations. Mel & Sue King Martin Williams Next in Section C Martin Williams of Hereford. Firstly congratulations to Tony Barrett and all section winners on what turned out to be a testing race on a hot day. My first bird back was a 3 year old hen from my old family, a full nest mate to my 2 nd OPEN FOUGERES BBC YOUNG BIRD 2019. SHE HAS BEEN A SPARE HEN ALL SEASON, RACED TO THE PERCH ON the South West and South East routes, so is very well educated. I managed to get her showing to a cock bird so this gave her some motivation for the race ahead. This was evident in the way she trapped. 2 nd Section G Darren, Sarah & Josh May of West Ashling. Unfortunately Darren was away and was unable to let me have any details but they did time a yearling blue pied hen to take 2 nd SECTION. John, Darren & Josh May 1 st , 2 nd & 3 rd SECTION E CHAMBERS FAMILY OF CANNOCK. FOR THIS RACE WE ENTERED A TEAM OF EIGHT YEARLINGS AS A training exercise to provide a bit more experience for next year's racing. Our first arrival was a yearling cock, who flew just under 14 hours to be the only bird on the day in his section provisionally taking 1 st Sec E 30 th OPEN. IT LOOKS like he will also be 3 rd SECTION IN THE BICC ON A TOUGH DAY FOR THE NORTHERN LOFTS FLYING OVER 400 MILES. His dam is our BBC National winner from Coutances in 2020 and his sire was 2 nd SECTION IN THE MNFC AS A YB FROM Chale. This season his aunties have topped the section 4 times in national racing with the NFC, BICC and BBC so it's fair to say this family have become really consistent for us from the National races. Our first two arrivals were both yearling cocks making their fourth trip across the channel this year, whilst our third and fourth birds were both yearling hens making their sixth trip across the water with the previous race being the British Masters race from St Philbert's. Once again, I would like to thank the race organisers, who have worked miracles this year to resume racing from France and the conveyers as despite challenging conditions, all of our arrivals were in fine condition when they landed. Finally, I would like to pay huge thanks to Silvester Brothers from Stoke-on-Trent for transporting our birds down to Sarisbury for race marking. I really do hope that the marking situation can be resolved for the northern flyers for next season as long term it cannot be sustainable to ask people from the midlands to complete a 300+mile round trip enter birds into a national competition.
