Coutances National 1 st OPEN 1 st SECTION A Tony Leggatt from Havant With “Lucky Thirteen” It was decided to put back our first race of the year to the weekend of 13 th May to try and encourage our further flying members to send and they did not disappoint us. With an entry of nearly 1,000 birds up on the previous year and a majority of these extra birds sent from the longer flying members, it was a decision worthwhile. We even had Phil Smith and John Downing from Ireland enter, with Phil making the trip over to Penkridge with the birds for marking, what dedication to the Club. That dedication has paid off as Phil clocked on the day during the hours of darkness at 21.54.51hrs. With these extra birds of course, came more work for our marking station helpers, with all marking stations going full pelt from start to finish I would like to thank them all for the work they did. Also to all the members who waited patiently in the queue for your birds to go through. Well, Nigel Rigiani must be congratulated on another great race the second week running, along with Roger Hurst our Race Advisor they got it spot on, with nearly everyone who sent verifying their first arrival and from what I have been told, returns are good as well. Many congratulations to Mr “Anniversary Waltz” himself Tony Leggatt from Havant leading the pack with a velocity of 1931 to take 1 st OPEN 1 st SECTION A. WELL WHO WOULD have though it, a distance flyer winning a short channel race at 65 mph. To win the BBC again gives me great pleasure, I am over the moon. The pigeon was one of a baker's dozen bred by my very good friend Calum Edmiston of Horley, from his very successful International team, full of Dutch distance blood lines. I have taken them carefully as young birds on the North road and also as yearlings, so to build a good stock, pure and crossed with my own very inbred Southwell based birds. I must give a lot of credit to my wife Sue, she did not only nurse me before and after, following my hip replacement last October but also took charge of the pigeons through out the winter months. She told me off, of all the things I did wrong, I was in no position to argue, because she had the whip hand (ha ha). We are going to call the bird “Lucky Thirteen”. Because 13 was the day of the race, my sister and myself were born on the thirteenth, my baby brother died of meningitis. So my late mother's lucky number was thirteen. I would like to thank all the members of my new club at Five Heads for making me welcome Dave Hawthorne and my old mate Tony Cripps, all of my friends for their kind wishes phone calls etc. Last but not least the officials of the BBC for doing an excellent job. PS. On leaving the marking station at Salisbury I bumped into Steve Harris and John Halstead together. The winners of the first Classic and BICC this year and said perhaps some of your luck will rub off on me____ it did. “Lucky Thirteen” 2 nd OPEN 2 nd SECTION ARE TWO GENTLEMAN OF THE SPORT JIMMY WEARN & ERIK NEILSON FROM Ramsdean. Firstly, I would like to congratulate Tony Leggatt on winning the race with a fantastic performance and also the great performance that was put up by the Irish pigeon. The breeding of our bird on the sire side is Denney/Cooper and Dame side is Rutz u Sohne. Erik Neilson Next we have the father & son partnership of Trevor & Adrian Wilson from Manuden, near Bishops Stortford taking 1 st SECTION J 3 rd OPEN. WE ARE VERY PLEASED WITH THIS RESULT AS THE PIGEON IN QUESTION IS A HOME BREED FROM OUR DIFFERENT STRAINS WE HAVE BEEN putting together for about 10 years. He's called “Flash” and is a 3 year old black pied cock bird. He's a broken pigeon as we have had to change lofts three times in the last 6 years but is now settled. Sire of Flash is 'the Hicks cock' a Leo van Rijn, as a young bird was moved 3 times then had four races winning 2 nd , 1 st , 1 st and made a bad mistake and homed in the dark at 10pm, absolutely shattered. Dam of Flash is a little black, she was bred for stock from first blood lot number 1 in the very first Jean Williums auction sale. An inbred grandson from his 2 top race cocks. Her dam a granddaughter of first national and 14 th OPEN MIDLAND NATIONAL TOURS. We would like to thank everyone involved in the running of the British Barcelona club, and our thanks to Mike and Edna Shepherd for the excellent marking station at walkern. Also congratulations to T Leggatt and Wearn Bros & Neilson. Trevor & Adrian Wilson and Freya Wilson 1st Section D 4 th OPEN IS MR & MRS MICK DICKINSON & SONS FROM HEMEL HEMPSTEAD. The pigeon that achieved 1 st SECTION, 4 th OPEN IS A YEARLING, DE RAUW SABLON WIDOWHOOD hen having its first channel race of the season. As a youngster this hen was 176 th OPEN NFC Coutances, winning the section E Gold Ring, and also 15 th Intercounties Federation 1,316 birds. The sire is a grandson of New Freddy and Bak 17, and the Dam is inbred to Lucky 848. The sister to this hen was 1 st Boxmoor HS Exeter the previous week, with our SECTION WINNER OUR SECOND PIGEON. We also had another De Rauw Sablon widowhood hen just a few minutes behind, doing 1798ypm, and so likely to be well up in the result also. This hen was 17 th OPEN BICC Falaise, 2015, and 146 th OPEN NFC YOUNGBIRDS, 2013. ONLY BEING LIGHTLY RACED DUE TO being hawked early last season. Our birds are all raced on widowhood, with National and Classic channel racing the priority. We sent 16, having them all return within 90 minutes, so would like to thank the BBC race organisers for a successful race. Many congratulations to the winner. Mick & Stuart Dickinson Never far from the top is Roger Lowe from Reading 2 nd SECTION D 5 th OPEN. SENDING 21 widowhood cocks, the first bird is a yearling mealy pied cock which has been flying well this season making the Fed in the last two weeks being 20 th 3,106b, 2 nd CLUB 9 th Fed 2,554b. His dam is “Ruby Red” an outstanding stock hen only ever having three Channel races as a young bird winning prizes in all three, best being 2 nd SECTION NFC AND OVER £1,500 in prize money. She is dam to “Fast As Lightning” winner of the BBC National by 25 minutes. She is bred by Sheldon Leonard and is a Lou Woulter x Janssen breeding. Sire is “Chantille Jr” he is bred from a direct Janssen bros cock when pair to “Sure Return” a direct daughter of “My Little Diamond” named “Sure Return” as she was given away has a young bird and returned as a four year old. Having 20 return on the day it turned out to be a very good race. Congratulations to the WINNER AND ALL THE PEOPLE CONCERNED. Roger Lowe In 6 th OPEN POSITION WE HAVE A LOVELY FAMILY WHO STARTED OF THE SEASON BY TOPPING THE BICC from Falaise, now well up in the BBC Steve, Yvette & Lauren Harris from Portchester. I would like to congratulate Tony Leggatt on his performance and also Jimmy Wearn & Eric Neilson. My first pigeon is a Vandenabeele x Jan Arden and is a full brother to "Dolly" who was first CSCFC Guernsey YB 2013. I entered 10 and got 9 home. Steve Harris 7 th & 8 th OPEN ARE TIDBURY & DEAN GARRETT FROM FELTHAM. FIRST OFF ALL WELL DONE TO the winner and section winners. This was our first race with the BBC and we was very pleased with the outcome and also getting 20/21 birds home so a big thanks to the Convoyors. Our first pigeon was a Jim Biss x Dave and Gary Heywood Hartog and our second bird was a Gaston van De Wouwer x Koopman from James Parker lines. Thanks again to my partner Danny Levett. Dean Garrett,Danny Levett, Deans son William, Dannys grandson Oliver Mannor Lofts (Martin, Clare & Jack Norman) from Southampton 9 th OPEN. FIRSTLY, we would like to congratulate Tony on winning the Open and also Phil Smith for timing his bird in to Ireland, we know what it means to him. Our timer was a widowhood yearling hen on her fourth race of the season. She was lightly raced as a youngster having just two coast races. This was her second time across the CHANNEL. LAST WEEKEND WE TIMED HER NEST MATE FROM COUTANCES WITH THE CSCFC BEING 98 th OPEN. She is bred from a cock loaned to us by our good friends Kevin & Chris White from Weymouth. He was bred by Crammond & Langstaff and is closely related to their NFC Winners. Kevin & Chris have already had good success with their pigeons. The dam was bred by Roger Phillips from Guernsey and is from his excellently bred family of Brockhamps. Roger has top quality everywhere in his stock loft and I am sure many more winners will be bred there. Martin & Jack Norman Mr & Mrs Trevor Green from Ashurst near Southampton 10 th OPEN. FIRSTLY I WOULD like to congratulate T Leggatt on his 1st Open. My blue 2 year old hen which was also my first bird in CSCFC last week, although a bit off pace, this week came like a rocket. I would like to thank Ronnie Johnson formerly of Futuristic Lofts who gifted me the parents the sire being Vandenheede/Hermans- Ceusters also a few other birds that have bred winners for me. Most of my birds are Lambrechts and Crehan-O'Connor fed on Gem corn, I have raced on and off for 45years. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Clare & Martin who I have know for many years for the great job they do. Trevor Green 2 nd SECTION J IS MARK BULLED FROM HARLOW. I TIMED A 2 YEAR OLD WIDOWHOOD COCK SCORING his first real prize. He struggled as a yearling but I’ve noticed a real change in his form this year. He is bred from my good hen “Charlotte” that has won 5 x 1 st CHANNEL IN THE CLUB, including 2 nd BICC Le Mans and 8 th BBC Fougeres. I had 20 from 20 in good time all in excellent condition. Well done to Trevor and Adrian Wilson for winning the Section, real hard taskmasters, and all other winners. Mark Bulled 1 st , 2 nd & 3 rd SECTION G WE HAVE DEREK REID FROM WEYBRIDGE. CONGRATULATIONS TO TONY for winning the race. My first pigeon has won many prizes before and two of his sons have also won. This year he has been off the pace, so I thought I would try him over the CHANNEL. HE IS BRED FROM A GARRY INKLEY HEN THAT I BOUGHT AT THE FAMOUS SPELTHORNE Breeder Buyer sale. The sire is from my Lady GaGa family (a half brother to my second pigeon Filmstar). My second pigeon was 58 th OPEN 3 rd SECTION IN THIS RACE LAST YEAR AND MY THIRD PIGEON WAS a grandson of my NFC Winner of 2005. I had a great race with 19 of 20 on the clock. As usual with BBC the birds were in great condition. A special well done to Dean Garrett first time he has sent with the BBC, he is a fellow club member of mine, the James Dean of the Spelthorne Club. Derek Reid Topping Section B is Vince McConnell of the R & V McConnell partnership from Ferndown, Dorset. Sadly Ron passed away few years ago so Vince races on his own, apart from sometimes with his stepdad..pictured with him John G (Mr Hartog). The cock is a Hartog whose brother scored last year 4 th OPEN 2 nd SECTION BBC. He is a 3 year old sent to his 3 rd RACE, COCKS HAVING BEEN HIT 3 TIMES BY HAWKS IN TRAINING, we just had to start them racing. Being last and last they started to come good last week with a 1 st and 3 rd CLUB 4 th & 13 th Fed. Normal racing just good management and few tricks. I would like to say thank you to Alfie and John for taking the birds. Had a great race 7/8 in no time in great condition. Also my Club done well we were 1 st , 2 nd , 3 rd , 4 th SECTION!! AGAINST THE WIND. The cock is now called Jelly Fish by John G as a thank you for taking them. Vince McConnell & John Gerard 2 nd SECTION B IS BRIAN YOUNG OF B & D YOUNG FROM BOURNEMOUTH. THIS BIRD WAS purchased from Derek Cooke as a young bird. It has been a steady bird, but this year I must have had the right hen for him. He is from the lines of Red Emperor. Thanks Derek he might make a winner yet! Brian Young Next in line to Derek Reid in Section G is Phil Nye & Ann Martin from Brighton. Phil and Ann have been in partnership for two years now, Phil has been racing pigeons for over 40 years. Phil is secretary and Ann is the Treasurer for the Brighton Central Flying club. Being the top flyers for last season winning 14 races, they thought they would enter the RACE WITH THE BBC NATIONAL FROM COUTANCES FOR THE FIRST TIME. Their first pigeon was a mealy cock flying natural while sitting eggs, he was bred for them by their very good friend Lee Norris. The pigeon is a Staf van Reet and has been a consistent racer winning club races and prizes. Ann is holding the second arrival pigeon which is a grizzle cock bred from their own family of pigeons. Phil Nye & Ann Martin Winners of Section C are two lovable rogues who bring out the worst in each other Ernie Smith & Darren Baker (Loft 2) from Swindon. The pigeon they timed is “Gerrrard” a 4 year old blue cock who in 2015 took 2 nd OPEN 2 nd SECTION C FROM THE BBC’S FOUGERES RACE. HIS SIRE & DAM ARE BRED BY IAN CRAMMOND & NIGEL LANGSTAFF BRED DOWN FROM THEIR number one pair of Kees Bosua/ Van Osch family. Ernie Smith, Darren Baker & Mitch Steve Slade from Calne takes 2 nd SECTION C. FIRST OF ALL I'D LIKE TO CONGRATULATE ALL THE SECTION WINNERS, AND A BIG THANKS TO NIGEL AND BILL FOR LOOKING AFTER THE PIGEONS SO WELL and the great condition they came back in. The pigeon is a chequer pied hen bred from John Halstead/Wilf Read stock pigeons. This is her second channel race this year as she went to the Classic the week before. Steve Slade 1 st SECTION E IS DAVE HARRIS FROM NEWPORT, SHROPSHIRE. THE BLUE COCK PICTURED WITH MY youngest son Kyle is from my Soontjens based family, he is a full brother to my BBC Fougeres 2012 Section topper and a half brother to last years BBC Messac Section Winner, he is also a nephew to the MNFC Lessay 2 nd OPEN COCK. Thank you to Kyle and Megan who tend to the young birds and to Karen "The Loft Manager" for her assistance through the years. A big thank you to John Whittingham for taking the birds to the marking station and well done on winning the Bell (Tong) FC. Dave & Kyle Harris 2 nd SECTION E IS MICK HUGHES FROM MARKET DRAYTON WITH A SELF BRED 2 YEAR OLD Busschaert cock that is very consistent in National racing, Mick’s wife Sonia sits at the loft waiting for National pigeons all day, it's a good job she does as Mick falls asleep in the sun. Mick Hughes 1 st SECTION F IS PHIL SMITH & SON MARK FROM DUNLAOGHAIRE, IRELAND. HISTORY WAS MADE in the British Barcelona Club today as this was the first pigeon ever to be timed into Ireland during race time. Phil’s ambition has always been to clock in race time from a BBC National and hopefully encourage other Irish fanciers to race with the BBC. This game 3 year old hen has had to cross the English Channel and the tough Irish Sea in a head wind to fly the 356 miles and probably more to make home by night fall with 14 hours on the wing. The weather in Ireland on the Saturday was atrocious with Irish organisations being held over due to the conditions. The Grandsire on the Sire’s side was bred by Brian Denney and is a Grandson of Tuff Nut with the Grandsire on the Dam’s side being from Jim Hooper’s stock when paired to a hen from Brian Sheppard, so if there ever was a pigeon to make this journey this would be it. Everyone within the Club could not be happier for Phil as he is a great ambassador for the British Barcelona Club and Irish Fanciers. Phil along with Pat Davis every year makes the long journey over for the BBC’s Young Bird Sale at Salisbury in April and also the Dinner Presentation in November. Phil and Mark Smith Phil and Mark’s hen. Convoyers Report Friday 12 th With everything set and the birds fed and re watered, a call was made to our race / weather advisor for the latest forecast for Saturday. The rain currently over the lib site was due to clear during the night but starting off cloudy with sunny spells and a WSW wind veering southerly in the channel. Saturday 13 th 05:30 We arose to find heavy grey clouds with a westerly wind blowing across the site but the visibility was good. A call was made to Roger telling me that things were improving as we spoke and by 07:00 we should see the skies clearing, the shipping forecast giving slight seas and visibility good to moderate and the weather in England due to clear by mid morning, so with that in mind we made the decision that when I felt things were good enough on site the lib was down to me. By 06:45 we could see the clouds breaking to the west with patches of blue sky heading our way we prepared the baskets but by the time we were ready it had clouded over again and that’s what it was like for the next hour and knowing there were birds from North Yorkshire and Ireland on board I wanted them to have as much flying time as possible and with it being bright to the North I decided to liberate when we had a sunny spell. At 07:45 with sun on the baskets we liberated into a Westerly wind on site and the birds clearing very well in a North Easterly direction. Saturday evening I received a call telling me that one of the nicest gentlemen in pigeon racing namely Tony Leggatt had won the race and that we had birds into North Yorkshire and best of all Phil Smith from Ireland had clocked on the day, as the convoyer I am so pleased to have looked after such gallant birds and well done to everyone who clocked. Sally Whitney and Ethan. As mentioned previously our charity nomination this season is Canine Partners who transforms the lives of people with physical disabilities by partnering them with assistance dogs. Here is Sally Whitney’s story and how being partnered with one of these dogs “Ethan” has changed her life. Sally was living life to the full and working towards a career as a doctor when suddenly her world came crashing down. Sally Whitney was just 17 when she was struck down by a mystery virus making her unable to leave her bed other than go to the toilet. Later, she was diagnosed with Lupus, a severe autoimmune condition, and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome which affects her connective tissues and causes mobility problems. Sally’s health worsened and since 2013 the previously fit and active young woman has been confined to a wheelchair and unable to be left alone in a room in case she has a seizure or a medical emergency. But since Ethan has come in to her life , things have been on the up. The golden retriever cross black Labrador has been trained by Midhurst-based charity Canine Partners which provides amazing assistance dogs that transform the lives disabled people. And the pair are inseparable. Now, the 29-year-old from Brighton can be in her bedroom with no one but her four- legged best friend. Ethan can fetch water, pick up anything she drops, open doors and call for help if she needs it. He even chooses her clothes. He has also learnt how to use Sally's contactless credit card – but so far he has managed to hold back from taking it on a spending spree and stocking up on treats and toys. Most of all Ethan has given Sally freedom and given her a positive future to look forward to. “Ethan has given me a positive outlook about being in a wheelchair. I am a smiley person and people would often come and ask me about my bright pink wheelchair but also my health. Now the first thing they ask about is Ethan and what he does for me, which I love – my poor health and disability are not the focus of attention”. “We have a very close relationship and are in tune with each other’s needs”. “He can now identify when my normal movements turn into the jerky movements of a seizure – Something he has learnt himself as Canine Partners aren’t trained to do this”. “He's made it his personal responsibility to be able to see my face at all times to monitor me and if Something happens he will immediately run for help as fast as he can”. "Ethan doesn’t feel like my pet or even my carer - he feels like my partner, but more than that – my hero partner”. Says Sally. Sally and Ethan are one of Canine Partners’ 378 partnerships that are currently active. Sally Whitney & Ethan Clare Norman. Tel: 023 8057 3919.
